Since the beginning of time, Kiwis have this love affair with Indian food. There are a few established Indian franchises in Christchurch and Oh Calcutta at Parnell is on yet another notch. The menu is extensive and it would take quite a number of visits to sample all those offering. The staff wears their traditional garb and the kitchen is of the Western standard where patrons get to see how naan is made by the chef (for example). The interior decor is above average. Wine menu is so-so. I tried the Mango Lasso and it's seriously thick and immensely sweet. I can't be sure if this is how an authentic Lasso should actually taste like. The restaurant has a great vibe and it packs very quickly. Definitely worth visiting.

Had been here with my wife for a casual dinner. Though we did not have a reservation, the owner was kind enough to offer us a table for 2 on a busy evening. We had ordered Chicken Tikka to start with which was served in acceptable time. The chicken pieces were well marinated, flavorful and cooked to perfection which made the pieces juicy and soft. For the mains we ordered Chicken Shahajani with a Calcutta Cheese naan and a Garlic naan. The staff members are well trained and had good communication between them as we were served the main curry however, the staff promptly returned and apologized saying that the curry was not made as per our spice requirement. He returned with a different serving in a few minutes. The curry was rich and tasteful and the naans were soft. I loved the garlic naan over the cheese naan, I guess the garlic naan always goes well with Indian food. On our way out, the staff gave us a friendly farewell with a lovely smile. Loved the ambiance and the atmosphere. The restaurant was extremely busy and the staff seemed a bit stressed however, I could see quite a few smiles which makes the difference. Would return with friends soon.

The atmosphere was romantic, beautiful. Food was absolutely delicious. Price average. Get the garlic naan to go with your meal.

Good Indian, but not out of the ordinary. After reading the great reviews we expected more. More expensive than most, without being better.

We dined here a few days ago as our guest had been before a number of years ago. There menu is quite extensive and service is prompt. Staff are well trained and friendly. We had a booked table and arrived early but it was packed within a short times so its obviously very popular.
We ordered entrées three mains and a selection of breads
All were delivered quickly and tasted fresh however I dont like this modern Indian trend of having pots of different gravies-cooking the meats etc in pan and to finish spooning in the spiced gravies into cooking vessel to heat up prior to plating.
To me this is not the proper way to cook Indian dishes-you need to start from the bottom up and cook spices first and add meats/vegetables next and cook together however this traditional way seems to be a thing of the past in all parts of the world a great shame to the great dishes of Indian cuisine.
