We were returning to The Maple Room after an absence, but found it as good as we had previously experienced. Its strength lies in the fact that it has no weak links; it's food, service, ambience and friendliness all rate highly. Usually a restaurant is let down by at least one of these factors, which diminishes the overall experience. The fact that the owners work in the business is a real strength and contributes to its consistent standards.
To our recent visit: arriving quite early, we were able to choose any of the free tables and then we asked to move to a just-vacated table in the window, which was no trouble to our friendly, helpful waitress. Delivery of drinks, bites, mains and desserts was nicely paced.
Only two very minor improvements could be made - having mentioned we were going to have pre-dinner drinks, we were asked for our dinner order almost straight away, and as happens everywhere, the wine list disappeared once and almost twice before we had ordered wines to accompany our meal.
One of the owners came to the table to check all was well and have a chat - a nice aspect in a local establlishment which makes patrons feel very welcome.
A dietary requirement was handled with due care and with no fuss, which was most appreciated.
One aspect of the menu we especially liked was the offering of "bites"; smaller, lighter and simpler dishes (garlic prawn skewers, salt and papper calamari, etc) than a traditional entree (although entrees were on the menu as well), and for smaller appetites it allows one to enjoy an additional course!
The meat of both the mains was tender, cooked very well and some accompaniments were creative and interesting. Another positive here is that each dish has specific, well matched sides, rather than the usual items standard to all mains. Another great touch was the hot plates, keeping our dishes warm whilst we dined in slow time.
Congratulations to the owners, chefs and wait staff of this establishment - you've achieved higher standards than many so-called fine dining restaurants, at prices we consider good value, and with a genuine, personal touch.
Many thanks too for the acknowledgement of the birthday on this occasion.
