Owner description: Matakana Village and Matakana Farmers Market, one hour from Auckland. Close enough to visit, far enough to stay. On Saturday the vibrant farmers market is a focal point for the community and its growers to meet. Produce fills the stalls - fruit and vegetables, delicious home-baking and Italian-style sausages, divine organic chocolate, fine wines and boutique olive oils, locally-brewed beer, cafes and live music. Matakana is a unique mix. Rainbow Valley Farm is a world-famous model for permaculture. You'll find a riverside gallery next to the new cinemas, the best in contemporary literature just over the road from teahouse or cafe.

“Upmarket in the country”

A good place for a day trip from Auckland. The popular farmers market draws crowds but I have not been there on the day of the market yet! Pleasant shops and a nice little cinema. Also makes a good stop if travelling further north.

“Great Day out”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 February 2012

Couple of hours North of Auckland. You'll need a car to get there. Wonderful little township with a country market on Saturdays. Lots of great boutique food ie best buffalo cheese I think I'll ever taste. There's a famous pottery just down the road which is also worth a visit.

“Village atmosphere in centre of Matakana wine country”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 February 2012

Situated in a stunningly attractive area North of Auckland which has superb coastline, beaches and scenery. Lots of wineries in the area. Matakana itself has good boutique shops, a cinema and Nosh for good groceries and food. Plus good cafes in the area. And don't forget Charlies Gelato Garden, a few minutes drive away, for an amazing selection of gelato and sorbets.

“The wealthy and green of Auckland weekend get away”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 January 2012

This is where the wealthy and green of Auckland get away to for the weekend. They have a great farmers market on Saturday mornings. Probably not worth a trip specifically to see if but certainly if one is in the area it is worth stopping to experience.
