Owner description: Matakana Village and Matakana Farmers Market, one hour from Auckland. Close enough to visit, far enough to stay. On Saturday the vibrant farmers market is a focal point for the community and its growers to meet. Produce fills the stalls - fruit and vegetables, delicious home-baking and Italian-style sausages, divine organic chocolate, fine wines and boutique olive oils, locally-brewed beer, cafes and live music. Matakana is a unique mix. Rainbow Valley Farm is a world-famous model for permaculture. You'll find a riverside gallery next to the new cinemas, the best in contemporary literature just over the road from teahouse or cafe.

“Nice stop off”
Reviewed 4 June 2013

We made the trip especially to the Village from Auckland for the Saturday morning farmers market. This was a little disappointing. Although quite a few stores it wasn't really your traditional farmers market more trash and treasure/craft market. Quite pleasant though and worth a look. The Village itself is pretty with a lot of places to eat. About 3Klms up the road is the beach, which again is a good photo opportunity.

“Matakana Village Magic”
Reviewed 27 May 2013

Accidental discovery, and even though it was raining, we loved it. A good variety of shopping designed for tourists in mind. Niknaks, confectionary, housewares with a difference, jewellry(good quality). Variety of Cafes,(Black Dog Cafe), Bars, pharmacy, bookshop and lots more. Had lunch at Black Dog Cafe. We sat round the fire and had good coffee and lovely Cafe food which was value for money, a must if in the Village.

Matakan has become a very busy place over the last few years, always something new popping up. The Farmers market is a must for overseas visitors. It has plenty of produce for tasting which is all locally produced. Lots of shops to browse and cafes in abundance. Also craft markets which are open on Saturdays.

“Try the Saturday market”
Reviewed 15 May 2013

We didn't really explore the village, but spent our time in the market, which is central and compact. Depending on your time of arrival (which determines where you park), you may have a bit of a walk from the car. Even on a rainy day, it was a great visit. There's coffee, extensive food stalls, various crafts, antiquey bits and pieces, live music and a friendly atmosphere. There are proper toilet facilities inside the brick building. It's possibly like a lot of other farmers' markets, but, as a trip out of Auckland (about an hour - quite scenic), it makes a worthwhile and enjoyable outing.

“Lovely Matakana”
Reviewed 11 May 2013 via mobile

I really like Matakana village. It's a lovely friendly little place. Best on a Saturday as the Farmer's market and craft markets are on. The Farmers market is not enormous as other reviews have mentioned, however is compact and full of locally grown/made yummy produce. Several nice cafes, I like the Black Dog cafe myself. However the cinema is also lovely as is the Vintry wine bar which only sells NZ wine.
