We have lived in Japan for 6 years (him) and 1 year (her), and we have been looking for some good Japanese food here in Auckland. It was a little less 'classy' than we expected, but nice and cozy for the two of us. We went on a Wednesday night and it was quite busy.

Since it was our first time to the restaurant, we tried their Yagyu Zen set for two people so we could try a little bit of everything. We ordered Chicken Katsuni and Pork Hooba Yaki as the mains. All the food was so good! The fish was fresh, the tempura light and crunchy, and the edamame so, so delicious. By the time we got to the mains, we were quite full and couldn't finish. I liked the crunchiness of the chicken katsuni and the sauce of the pork hooba yaki. If they could put those two together, it would've been perfect! The food was good, but a bit pricey, so we won't be coming here too often.

Went with my wife to celebrate her birthday. We only booked three hours before going and were pleasantly surprised that we could get a booking with such late notice. The woman on the phone was very friendly. We had to settle for one of the high bar stool tables near the rear of the restaurant due to the lateness of the booking but it was well worth it.

We like the that that it is BYO so that we can take our own wine. They also have their own wine list. The restaurant was full when we arrived (8.00pm) but it always is when we have dined previously. We were promptly seated and our orders taken quickly. We love the freshness of the food and our usual sashimi platter was as good as usual along with the flame-grilled salmon and prawn ngiri sushi drizzled with teriyaki sauce and Japanese mayonnaise. The matador roll sushi (flame-grilled eye fillet with avocado and cucumber) was also excellent along with the chicken yakitori.

The service was attentive and friendly through-out, the cheque was delivered promptly when asked for and the farewell from the staff was good.

Musashi is well priced for Japanese food, always excellent and a little gem tucked away in the back of St Heliers. We look forward to returning.

Food was fantastic and very reasonably priced. The restaurant was absolutely packed which we were pretty surprised especially being a small restaurant in a quiet location with no views.... however apparently this is normal...

The soft spider crab roll was lovely and the tuna sensational!!!

My only downer on the evening was the service which I thought was below average. I get frustrated in restaurants like this that have fantastic food but get let down by the front of house staff. Clearing tables and asking clientelle if they would like another drink (after finishing 15 minutes ago) to me is absolute basic front of house skills.... I do hope this reataurant gets this side of the operation together.

I will happily be back for another meal as the food was genuinely great....

Among the best Japanese cuisine I have had anywhere, and I'm including Nobu and Zuma in that. Also they are the only Japanese resto that I'm aware of that has a kids menu with kid meals, kid crockery and a very reasonable set price. Also the Asahi on tap is served perfectly - frozen glass, fresh, and well poured. Highly recommended.

The venue is in a non descript area of St Beliefs. There are no views. It is hot and stuffy.
But the food is worth it.
If you like Japanese cuisine, come here. It is not pretentious just good clean food at reasonable prices.
You do need to book because it is justifiably popular.
