“Fabulous”

My husband and I spent four fabulous days at the Champers Motor Lodge at the beginning of December. Having never been to Gisborne before this was a new experience for us. The motor lodge was everything it had been advertised to be. The hosts, David and Debbie, could not have done enough for us and the service was excellent. The accommodation was very comfortable and extremely clean. Breakfast was available. The weather was really good, so made use of the pool one day. We had flown down and so had a loan car a couple of days so we could see some of the sights. A great novelty was the Christmas tree in the reception, which was decorated with tiny jandals. Will definitely be returning to Champers.

Room Tip: All the rooms were top grade.

We stayed in the 2 bedroom unit which was spacious, clean and had everything you could need, including a spa bath, which we got working on the second attempt (clearer instructions would have been helpful). This motel is a little far from the town centre, but the positive side to this is that it's quiet. It's opposite the golf course and a short walk from a little stream with good photo opportunities at sunset. The swimming pool is great and there is a barbeque for guest use. The only thing this place lacks is outside space to sit, although there is a table and chairs by the pool. Very nice, helpful, friendly people run this motel.

My family and I stayed for three nights at Champers motor lodge. We found the two bedroom family unit to be spacious, clean, warm, and comfortable. The weather was terrible and it was our first trip to Gisborne. When we got back to our unit after battling the weather we had space to stretch out and the spa bath was a welcome treat. The unit was very clean and great value for the money. I would stay here again when visiting Gisborne. A little bit out from central town but very quiet as a result. Friendly helpful hosts and the daily newspaper was appreciated.

I recently stayed at this motel, located at the southern end of Gladstone Road, Gisborne’s main street. It's a modern, standard-construction single-level New Zealand motel: units set out in an L-shape; set slightly back from the road, with parking outside your unit door. On arrival, reception was efficient - you’ll get the usual small bottle of milk when you arrive, and will be offered a morning newspaper (use to be std; now rarer at motels).

We stayed in the generously-proportioned Unit 4: A two-bedroom, one bathroom unit. It's the largest offered by the motel. Unit clean and well-kept. Fitting in the maximum 8 people might be a squeeze – (one queen-sized bed; two singles; and two double sofa beds). Unit better suited for two adults and two- three children, I would say -especially as there is only one bathroom.

Fittings in unit: Kitchen with decent-sized fridge/freezer, toaster, kettle, microwave, two burner stove top, and all the table-ware and cooking implements you would need to self-cater. Only downside: no full oven, limited to two stovetop elements or the microwave – not great if you are staying longer and wanting to make dinner (could be BBQ available though). TV (with only five Sky digital channels). Clock-radio only in double bedroom. Complimentary toiletries in bathroom. Lots of extra towels and bed linen (see in closets). Pay per 24-hour use Wi Fi available - pay at reception to get access.

Other features: Small playground (but motel partially backs onto the playing field of a primary school; for a short walk there’s more room for kids to run around). The pool – solar-heated – is nice though I don’t know how long it's open out of season. Guest laundry facilities. Breakfast available to deliver to room, but pricey - get your own supplies at supermarket before you arrive. If you have a dirty car, there is a well-located fixed garden hose and parking space allocated for sprucing up your vehicle.

Location: Gladstone is a busy road but it’s the motel strip so many others are located here. If you want a quieter location, try Waikanae Beach, unless you don’t like the sound of the ocean! Easy to get to airport from motel, as it’s the nearest to airport turn-off. Small dairy (grocery store) approx 100 metres further north, opposite. Nearest café, about 8 mins walk away – Wild Food Café - but lots of options in the town, a short drive away.

Downsides: Would have liked some outdoor space to sit allotted to each unit – given the wide grass patch at back of units, it’s a shame this is not utilised. Room showing a few signs of wear – luggage marks on wall - but it didn’t detract really. Kitchen could do with oven, even if benchtop.

Would stay here again, as convenient for my needs, and Unit 4 is a generous two-bed unit.
