“Beach Front Location Not Everything”
Reviewed 3 March 2013

Stayed one night. We were in a two room unit downstairs near the stairs to the upper rooms. We found it very noisy with people up and down the stairs and as we were close to the car park we were woken with vehicle starting up and doors closing. Internet was expensive so didn't bother. Room was very comfortable and spacious. We had arrived a day earlier than expected and Whispering Sands had no accommodation so we stayed in a motel further down Salisbury Rd. We found that accommodation better value for money and internet was free.

We stayed here for three nights in peak season (early January). At $240 per night, I consider this an expensive motel and expect a lot.

Positive: great location, spotlessly clean, super-cool sixties original interiors, very committed management

Negative: downstairs rooms have no privacy from adjacent rooms, beachfront walkway or car park. Other visitors treated the place like a club of friends or caravan park while we were there but this may have been just bad luck. The two bedroom family suites are too small for a family for more than a night: entrance through carpark into one bedroom, then access via galley kitchen or galley bathroom to main room. The upstairs rooms may be much the better choice and also have views of the ocean.

Room Tip: Upstairs the only option if you want any privacy.

This is the best place to stay in Gisborne; it's on the Waikanae ('city') beach although not in the centre of Gisborne which could be a problem for anyone without a car. The Whispering Sands Motel is almost iconic - very simple, stylish and well-equipped motel units - and, at peak periods, booked out from one year to another. The owners, Judith & Peter, are helpful and charming; even the cleaning team is terrific! I stay here most years, and the kitchen is sufficiently well-equipped for some reasonably serious holiday-style cooking.

Room Tip: I prefer the upstairs units: they're more private and have better views. Ground level ones poss...

From the registration desk at the beginning of the stay to the reluctant handing in of the key at the end you will enjoy the beautiful inclusive chattels and features of this piece of paradise. It has a slightly Japanese feel to the decor which is fresh and different and very clean. The quality of the chattels and extras are appreciated as is the location - right on the beach front. The hosts cannot do enough for their guests to ensure they have an excellent experience. Highly recommended.

Owners very accommodating and helpful. Comfortable stay with a nice bed. Quiet, and a great distance from town, not too far, but far enough. Have stayed before and is motel of choice in Gisborne

I had the pleasure of staying at the Whispering Sands Motel at the beginning of the year and was impressed with the whole place. The room (1 queen) was immaculate and comfortable with the view of the bay superb. I believe it is the the only motel in Gisborne on the beach front. The motel owners were very knowledgeable about the local area and were happy advice me to on what to do in our short stay in Gisborne. What sets this motel out from other motels i have stayed in New Zealand is the view, the value and the friendly service that we recevied from the motel owners Peter & Judith. I look forward to my next stay when i visit New Zealand again.

Room Tip: Definately book a upstairs room, sit on the private balcony and enjoy the lovely sunsets over the ba...

Excellent views from the room although when we were there it rained a lot but would think that if sunny the views would be amazing across the bay. Friendly and helpful owner and we thought the room layout was fine. Very well equipped with all you would need to self cater but within walking distance of the harbour area and town centre if you wanted to eat out. Also easy walk to the Crook Cook statue at the top of the hill nearby which was worth the effort to get stunning views across the bay and over Gisborne(although it is not the prettiest of towns in all honesty!)
