Very helpful and accomodating hosts. Went out of their way to fulfil our needs. Stayed in a 1 bedroom unit which was very spacious and clean. Not many hosts would cook your crayfish for you! Thanks again Terry and Marg. Hope to get back to Gisborne soon.

The first thing we saw when we arrived at this motel were the dead plants in all of the pots. Inside, the room was very dated. Built probably early 70s and it doesn't look as if any renovation has been carried out since then. Rickety furniture, a dreadful old iron bed with a dubious cover in the lounge. Broken venetian blind and threadbare curtains in the bedroom. The room also smelt revolting, and the carpets were stained. It was a windy night when we stayed and we were kept awake all night by something loose banging on the roof above us. On our trip we stayed in 7 motels and this was not only the worst but also the most expensive.

Reception service was more than satisfactory, particularly as the proprietors were temporarily absent. Like many NZ motels, the room came with kitchen facilities, a seating area, and a separate bedroom. Unfortunately the lounge area contained a single bed facing an old TV, which came with SKY programs but no working remote control. The ancient settee faced a table. The bedroom also contained a single bed, in addition to the required double bed, thereby converting a regular double bedroom into an overcrowded, uncomfortable area. The overall result was a substantial degrading of otherwise satisfactory accommodation. This situation was surprising considering that most motel units were vacant.

The motel's location, close to both the CBD and the beach, is very convenient. It also provides a free internet service.

We stayed in a one bedroom unit (Unit 10) which was downstairs. The unit was very clean and tidy and had all of the amenities that we needed. The staff were very friendly and obviously efficient in their work. Our room was unobtrusively serviced expertly each day.
Margaret our host was very friendly and helped us out with great local knowledge. (Thanks a lot for the directions to the orchard that sold peaches for bottling)

The manager went out of her way to accommodate us when we changed numbers and rooms during out stay. Motel across the road from Waikanae Beach and close to the city and food outlets.

As a fellow motelier I stayed Here to visit family and found the Waikanae Beach Motel to be really handy to everything and great for early morning walks on the beach. My room was spotlessly clean and I found the hosts Marg and Terry to be really friendly and helpful. Fabulous place to stay in the central city and yet by the beach.

Personally I dont think the motel was outdated at all, it was very clean and very accomodating.
The only problem we had was the fact that a group of us had come over for the wine festival and were treated what i thought was to be a bit harsh on our second night. Of course it was expected that we would all be a bit on the "out of orderly" side by the time we got back to the motel after our fantastic day at the festival, only to be told at 8.30 pm that if we didnt quieten down we would have the police called on us.......... (i had been a bit rowdy for about 10 minutes.....) The amusing part was that we had made much more noise the night before and the motel managers said they hadnt heard a thing. At the end of the day we all still had a great time and the motel managers were really quite accomodating, patient and helpful apart from that one comment. If it wasnt for that we would all have been more than happy to have stayed there again next year. (But then they probably wouldnt have us!) It was the Wine Festival weekend afterall and some noise should have been expected. Maybe in future, motels should keep this in mind.

  • Liked — conveniently situated to beach, town and great cafe/restaurant a few hundred metres away.
  • Disliked — already noted.
