“Heaven in Napier”
Reviewed 22 January 2012

We traveled in New Zealand with friends and ended our trip with Malcolm and his sons at Breckenridge Lodge. From our arrival until our tearful farewell, we were in New Zealand heaven. The property and lodge were so beautiful and well appointed, the hospitality was unparalleled, and the food, oh my, the food. Never ending taste delights with every bite. Unbelievable combinations of fresh food, excellent wine, and imagination. Our last evening Malcolm created a progressive dinner in the gardens culminating in the lovely dining room. We were simply amazed. Malcolm is a kind magician who shares his lovely kingdom with those lucky enough to find it.

Room Tip: All the rooms have a lovely view of vineyard, countryside, gardens. I believe they all have either...

Extremely comfortable and welcoming. Malcolm, the owner, is a fantastic cook and host with brilliant creations for breakfast and dinner. He will arrange and advise on anything locally from wine visits to golf etc. We wished we had stayed a couple of nights longer to explore more of the region.

Malcom and his son made us feel right at home. My husband and I never stayed at a B&B before and had some reservations.
They were immediately removed upon arrival.
The home was amazing and got better come there.
The grounds were like a botanical garden, herbs, citrus, vegetables and lush and tropical plants every where, meticulously maintained.

We and a gourmet meal with wine pairing prepared for us by Malcolm that will never compare to anything else.

Apparently when we left to head to Wellington my husband left a pair of shorts behind. When we returned one day to our hotel a package was waiting from Malcolm, it was the shorts. He mailed them to the hotel, he remembered where we we're heading.
Unbelievable is all we can say. Who does that, Malcolm, that's who.

I would highly recommend this B&B if you want am unbelievable .

We spent two nights here during our driving tour through NZ. The hotel is in a lovely spot overlooking vineyards. It was more like staying with friends than hotel accomodation. The room was very luxurious, with nice homely touches (fresh flowers etc). The view over the vineyards was spectacular, and soon after arriving host Malcom brought delicious chilled Sauvignon, which we took on our own terrace suffused with the smell of orange blossom. The highlight was Malcom's cooking. Personal attention, wonderful ingredients many from his vegetable and fruit garden, beautifully presented, and with excellent wine to match. Dinner was at an elegant communal table with other guests, which was surprisingly convivial, as everyone had travellers' stories to relate. The breakfast was just as high quality, and an excellent start to a little vineyard touring. We can strongly recomend you break your journey here.

Malcolm is the perfect host and the best gourmet chef and wine connoisseur that i've have had the privilege of meeting. Breckenridge's setting on a hill overlooking a large vineyard is spectacular.... and close to other tourist locals. The five course meals and matching wines were superb... i liked that Malcolm asked for my likes and dislikes regarding the various dishes being planned/severed. His expert commentary on the food and wines was much appreciated as well.
The modern decor was tasteful and rooms were very comfortable... and very quite.
A truly wonderful experience...

Room Tip: All rooms have a great view...

My father and I just returned from NZ and this lodge is top notch. From Malcolm Redmond's culinary expertise and creativity to the regional organic ingredients, to the fantastic location overlooking a local vineyard, how can you go wrong?

We experienced the entire region and this was a major highlight. The short drive into all neighboring cities, makes this an ideal location. Skip the dumpy hotels in Napier and stay here. This was the perfect jumping off point for all key sites.

Breakfast and dinner are inclusive, and each dinner course is carefully paired with a local wine (my new local favorite is the Doctor's Vineyard) and you certainly don't leave hungry. Chef Redmond was also a chef at the Huka Lodge, so he is absolutely masterful in the preparation and presentation.

The grounds are gorgeous and the views are breathtaking. It was a great value.

from the moment you arrive and Malcolm rushes out to greet you you know you are in for a special experience at Breckenridge Lodge. Although a lovely setting overlooking vineyeards it wasn't quite as peacefulas one might hope due to neighbours children rushing up and down the road on Mini motos > however they did stop eventually in time for an outdoor aperitif before the highspot namely Malcolms cooking. As others have reported the food is superb and the meal is accompanied by perfectly matched lwines with malcolm giving a little commentary on each. And the rooms are very comfortable. An absolute gem.
