Our stay at The Grange was one of our best family holidays anywhere in the world. Don and Ros welcomed us into their home and we were truly made to feel like family. When our children weren't busy feeding the farm animals and playing with Sam and Allie, we drove the few minutes to Napier township where there are an abundance of activities for all ages - many of which are outdoors in the Hawkes Bay warmth and sunshine. Don's knowledge of winemaking and his bespoke wine tour for our family, provided a unique behind the scenes educational experience into the science and art of creating many varieties of wine. This was a first class family holiday experience and we look forward to our next stay.
Our third visit to the Grange Farmstay (and fifth visit to Hawkes Bay region) once again exceeded expectations. In avoidance of Canadian winter, we stayed at the Grange in February 2007, 2010 and 2017.
One highlight for us was a growing friendship with Roslyn and Don. Don’s wine expertise made for one very interesting evening with them, matching several wines with Roslyn’s excellent food. Had we more time to consider Don’s burgeoning wine tour business, we would also have arranged for a day with him exploring local vineyards and embracing his incredible zest and remarkable knowledge for New Zealand wine. At the Esk Valley Winery we were told that Don is a leading expert in NZ wine.
Since 2010 Roslyn and Don have made improvements to the kitchen area of the lodge making it even more pleasurable for food preparation. We took advantage of local fresh produce stands close by, and wines, to prepare dinner each night as we relaxed after our day’s outing. The view of the Pacific Ocean from our deck, BBQing, and sitting at the picnic table is something we will always remember. Even before we left we chatted about our next visit.
Day’s outings included many of the local trail walks, exploring Napier’s Art Deco facades and charming harbour with interesting shops and outdoor cafes, visiting Bluff Hill’s incredible ocean view, exploring beaches, checking out wineries and a special treat ... enjoying a James Taylor concert at Church Road Winery. Two weeks flew by!
Roslyn and Don offered advice and recommended places to visit. Their quiet presence during our two-week’s stay was, as usual, a comfort that only they could provide.
Thank you for another lovely holiday, Simon and Heather
