Our guide was exceptionally knowledgeable about the buildings in Napier and had many photos of the buildings showing them how they were to compare them to how they now are. Also many photos to show what was in Napier pre the 1930's earthquake which is what caused the city to rebuild so quickly and embrace the Art Deco style so prevalent. Very worthwhile walking tour.

The personal tours are first rate. The Trust staff are kind and helpful. The renovations of Napier have been tasteful. But: the shop is rather kitschy and expensive . Where are every day, well designed, simple utensils - replace eg the fussy, over -decorated non art deco teacups with useful, plain cutlery or teapots. Have a few simple 1930s dresses or trousers, not just rather garish plus fours. Nothing there is locally made. The shop should have replicas of everyday things people used in Napier around the time, and especially well designed, simple things. Can no NZ firms oblige? If they cannot, replace the perhaps Chinese made imports with art deco everyday items sourced outside NZ in shops found wherever local art deco/Bauhaus buildings are treasured.

We did a one hour walking tour of the art deco buildings and enjoyed every second of it. The tour guide was great and loved his job as a guide.

The Art Deco Trust run a number of tours from self-guided walks and bike trails, to guided walks, vintage car and mini bus tours so you won’t be stuck for choice.

To highlight the benefit of taking a tour we wandered around Napier town centre on our own for a while not quite sure of what we were observing and then retraced our steps with a guide shortly afterwards who provided enlightenment. We did a 1 hour walking tour which cost $17 per adult and departs from the iSite building - it ends with a 20 minute film about the 1931 earthquake and a refreshing cuppa!

Our guide was one of a number of local volunteer ladies and was fairly quiet spoken but knowledgeable and we benefited by staying close to her as we walked around (one or two others in our group of roughly 12 people seemed happy enough to linger behind taking photos).

The town centre was destroyed by fire following the earthquake in 1931 and was quickly rebuilt in the style of the time - Art Deco - so this isn’t an attempt to create a themed attraction in Las Vegas fashion - it’s the genuine article! We were surprised to find that the townspeople hadn’t just jumped on the bandwagon in recent years and started modifying buildings to look like Art Deco structures, they are original. (There are 140 of the original 164 building erected between 1920 and 1940 still standing and consequently it represents a high concentration of Art Deco structures still existing in international terms).

Our guide pointed out the various Art Deco styles which we began to recognise ourselves, including some New Zealand twists on the theme. She also provided a little background to some of the people involved at the time and to present day (some owners have restored interiors of building to reflect how they would have looked and permit visitors to view at times). Decorative features on the buildings and even on the pavements were highlighted which we previously failed to see amongst the modern day signage, etc.

The short tour was well worth the time spent and at least we went away with an appreciation of what the place is all about.
