“Excellent park under new management”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 November 2012

Wow, whatever the former visitor actually is doing in New Zealand eludes me. If you start dreaming about a Tsunami, when camping below sealevel (in his mind, as the whole campground is safe and sound above the water level), what will he do in areas where other disasters, like vulcanic eruptions and eartquakes (not really uncommon in NZ) can disturb his sleep?

We found this park a breath of fresh air. There was a new owner since a few weeks, clearly intending to make a good and sound name for himself with a new toilet/washroom block. Yes, it meant there were only three toilets available, but also the number of campers was what you can expect in pre-season weeks.

It took us only 5 minutes by car to lovely Napier with its nice shops and restaurants, although the chef at the Snapper Cafe on the site itself also knew her business. Perhaps some longer opening hours in the evening would attract even the locals to what was on offer.

The sand dune or dike (I am Dutch, can you tell?) meant we were protected from the seabreeze, although in hot weather that might be a disadvantage, but I suppose we would be on the beach than anyway.

The beach, ah wonderfull, we actually saw an Orca and thought we saw Dolphins. Many people were fishing and I was told, that Snappers are actually caught here and many disappear on the barbie on site.

Surely a park that is worthy of another visit, no matter how friendly the staff is trying to help us find a spot, even when we come unprepared without a tent and having to walk to protect our fellow campers from choking them with our exhaust fumes.

This place is about 20 minutes north of Napier and right next to the beach. The park is actually behind a rise and appears to be below sea level. The one night I was there I kept dreaming of a tsunami.

The receptionist had a hard time figuring out where to put me as I was in a car and had no tent. The first place she assigned me was occupied so a different person reassigned me to a tent location. Many of the tent sites were free of parking so you would need to park elsewhere and haul your tent and stuff over. Showers required a dollar coin for hot water. Both men's and women's facilities were under renovation and there was only 3 units for the whole park. The kitchen was small. It appeared there were several long term guests there with modified/extended caravans. One even was selling succulent plants as a side business. The sites were poorly labeled and I had to ask several times for directions. They have a cafe on site which seemed to be a good business and the good looked good. They also sold a few basics like soda, water, milk and ice cream.

After one night, I wanted something a bit closer to town and friendlier.

Hi there,
firstly I would like clarify that we are 8kms from Napier's City Center which is a 10minute drive (not 20), you can cycle along the coastal pathway into Napier approximately 20 minutes. Also as deceiving as it may seem we are actually above sea level but like a lot of areas in Napier after the earthquake it can appear otherwise, if you had inquired at reception we would have been happy to explain and give you some of the history of the area too which is very interesting, it may have put your mind at ease so you could have a good nights sleep.

As for the mix up with your site I am very sorry about that, as we are very quiet on our tent sites at the moment people often take it upon themselves to move sites without informing us so it can cause problems when it comes to assigning people to sites.

Our tent sites are lovely and sheltered with plenty of room to park directly in front, so there is definitely no need to park away from your site and 'haul your tent and stuff over'.

Yes we are currently renovating our men's and ladies ablutions and therefore have 3 unisex bathrooms available for use, and because of possible inconvenience this may cause we have discounted our rates to compensate, the lady at reception should have explained this to you and I appologise if she did not. We have not yet had any complaints about their being a shortage as it is still a quiet time of year in the park.

Thank you for your nice comments about the cafe, it is going very well (only one year old) and is very popular amongst local cyclists and walkers as they can use the Coastal Pathway to get to us.

We hope you enjoyed the rest of your time in NZ.

We booked two self-contained units, side by side. This was ideal for a long weekend away with the five of us and my father. The units had everything we needed, and the view was fantastic. Yes, it probably is time for a bit of an upgrade - but given the high cost of other places in Napier, we felt it was good value. And when we asked for additional towels and tea towels, it was not problem getting them.

Room Tip: get beach front -great view!

Stayed numerous times here- camping & motel. Beachfront motels have brilliant beachfront views. But:
Cleaning is poor- floors not vac'd or mopped, hairs in shower(!) toilet seats old & scratched = DIRTY.
Furnishings getting tired-curtains missing hooks, frying pan should be chucked out.
BBQ's available but no gas bottles there.
Lighting outside is poor and surfaces are rough- easy to trip at night if walking around.
Campsite is lovely though with good plantings. shade trees & sheltered.
Fly in food cabinet of restaurant. Woman was unphased by this and said "they are drowsy from the cold so easier to catch in there" OMG. What else is happening in the kitchen.........
Didn't eat at restaurant after fly comments!
Motel units are certainly overpriced. You pay dearly for the beachfront view.
Napier is fabulous for safe cycling- highly recommended!

Room Tip: At this price better quality motel units are available in Napier- these motel units are overpriced f...

Hi there,
we appreciate your review even though it does not contain the feedback we would hope to hear it does raise awareness to things that we need to improve. We agree that all of the faults mentioned are things that need to be improved and as of the 1st of November we have a new owner who is very keen to address these as soon as he can. For instance one of the first things he has done since taking over the business is to purchase a new vacuum as we had noticed the previous one was not lifting lint off the felt carpet in the units. Secondly he has commenced on refurbishing the shared amenities which is very exciting for us as this is something that really needed addressing.
As for the fly in the cabinet due to the change in season the day that you were here was the first day we had suffered that problem so we removed any food that a fly had come in to contact with and then at the end of the day we pulled the cabinet apart in order to find out how they were getting in there and have not had the same problem since.
I have mentioned the curtains to the cleaners as this is something they should be checking when they clean the units and they always carry spare hooks in order to fix any broken ones so this will be addressed.
We would love to have to back again one day to show the improvements we have made to the place, so that your holiday experience is in line with your expectation. Kind regards.

Me and my partner spent a very relaxing 2 nights at the holiday park and couldn't praise the place enough! The staff were friendly and helpful right from the moment we checked in until the time we left. We rented a self contained unit (with a minimum 2 nightly discount special!) equipped with everything we needed although we tended to eat out so didn't use our kitchen all that much. BBQs also provided outside the units which I imagine would be a nice touch in summer! We were right on the beach front and found it quite relaxing going to sleep with the sound of the sea in the background. A short drive to town or there's a walking track which apparently takes about 40mins (we were too lazy!) Warm, clean rooms and comfy beds. Thanks heaps, we will be back! :)

We arrived at the holiday park late at night. After a cheery welcome, we were told to make sure that we parked the camper parallel to the beach so we had a great view in the morning... we did as we were advised and although we could hear the sea all night, we had no idea how amazing the view would be in the morning. As we sat having breakfast looking out to the sea, we were delighted.

The holiday park itself it large and provides lots of different camp site options and not all right next to the sea (although the beach is easily accessible). The showers need coins, so check with reception if you don't have change but they were clean and powerful enough so there were no problems.

It's a short drive into Napier and there isn't much nearby, so stock up and cook on-site or make use of the cafe.

My only criticism is that the park was so badly lit and signed that when I tried to make my way from our site down to the washrooms, I got completely lost. But, if you arrive during daylight then this definitely wouldn't be a problem as you can get your bearings before nightfall.

Room Tip: If you want a powered motorhome site then I'd recommend requesting a spot near the beach.

We have just got home after 2 wonderful days/nights at Snapper Holiday Park. It was our second visit and they now have a brilliant cafe with delightful food and staff. Our second night was spent with our 5 year old daughter building a wonderful fire on the beach. The shear pleasure and excitement on her face was priceless. Our last morning we were treated to the view of a pod of dolfins swimming past within 200 metres of our beachfront unit. An hour later we were strolling down the beach collecting pumice when we came across a baby seal basking in the sun on the pebbles. What an amazing place to see all this within such a small strip of beach. We will definately be back.

Room Tip: Beachfront was so worth the xtra money.
