After all the hype this was a tremendously underwhelming experience mainly because of the lack of service. We were basically ignored, chose our own wine and left. There was no effort to explain to us about tours or tastings etc. just seemed like a posh bottle shop.

My mom, sister, and I decided to do a wine tasting here and loved it. Sam was knowledgeable, friendly, and engaging. She also gave us great tips and information for our travels around New Zealand. She helped us choose our wines to taste and we even sampled one of her favorites. Actually, her favorite chardonnay turned out to be our favorite wine that we tasted there! I usually do not like chardonnay, but this one was not a typical chardonnay at all. It was wonderful! All in all, an enjoyable and memorable experience!

We stopped here during our tour with the Art Deco Trust. It's set in an old hotel and there are several artifacts from that time as well as the beautiful door and interior designs. We didn't buy wine as it seemed expensive, but that could just be what we looked at. Definitely worth stopping in and checking it out.

Of course you should do both but as this was less than five minutes from our hotel it would have been rude not to have done a tasting. Things did seem a little disorganised to start with in terms of different options and what order to do activities in (especially as we were one of only two couples in the place) but as the drink flowed we mellowed and it actually proved to be an excellent tasting session. Not only great wines (and a generous number) but also because they have two aroma rooms with a full range of the wine smells we know and read about - this is in my experience quite unusual and a great opportunity to test your nose. Great value and of course you can buy afterwards.....

We went for the full experience. Wine, food pairings and dessert wine.

Starting with the aroma room - we were left on our own to figure it out. The idea was to try and smell the various unique compounds found in the wines. So that when the time came to taste, you could recognize them. Some had no smell, some were faint, but those that we could, was really quite fun.

The wine tasting was done via a video playback. Having the food there along with the wine really helped put some of the wines in context.

Finished with the desert wines with a staff member. Quite enjoyable.

Drawbacks are that it seemed a little understaffed. I noticed a few customers that gave up at the cash while waiting for some one to return to sell to them.

As well the information was a little inconsistent. The staff member who helped us, said we didn't both have to do the white wine experience, one could do the red instead - if we couldn't make up our minds. Yet after she finished her shift, the replacement staff told some new customers that they both had to do the same wine tasting - either all red or all white.
