After staying with friends in Wellington for a couple of nights on makeshift beds, and eating nothing but takeaway food, we felt in need of a little bit of luxury when we got to Napier.
We were travelling round the world for our 25th wedding anniversary, and had stayed in some wonderful places. So on the way we had a jokingly made up a list of all the comforts we were looking for. So we headed for the tourist info office and laid down our specifications.
They suggested and then booked us into The County.
And we found them here with abundance !!!
(Apart from the swimming pool, but there is access to one opposite)
We were initially given a room that was beautiful, but altho it had a balcony, our view wasn`t a pretty one, overlooking nothing but flat roofs and satellite dishes.
We politely enquired if there was a similar room, with a better outlook and were very kindly shown up to The Regal Suite for no extra cost.
It was superb, and fitted all of our requirements even down to the fire !!!
So spacious, it was almost ridiculous, beautifully clean and very tastefully furnished in the Art Deco style.
There was also a extensive wrap around balcony which comes in very handy for the smokers amongst us.
We paid the equivalent of £175 for a bed breakfast and 3 course a la carte evening meal package, for the two of us.
Unfortunately we were a little late down to dinner, because after a bottle of wine earlier, we couldn`t unlock our door (big old key and lock, gorgeous, but stiff !!!)
The food was absolutely delicious, and very artistically presented...along with a complimentary glass of champagne for our having been trapped in the room, which was very much appreciated, too.
Breakfast was also a culinary delight, and we loved the artwork in the restaurant, that the proprietor took great pride in pointing out to us. Which was followed by an interesting conversation on Salvador Dali and the wonders of Italy.
The staff were all very welcoming and helpful, nothing was too much trouble for any of them, including the restaurant staff, who I must apologise to, as we were possibly a tad too giggly when we finally made it to the table :)
All in all, this really was a very special place.
