“Worth going back to New Zealand for !!!”
Reviewed 7 May 2012

After staying with friends in Wellington for a couple of nights on makeshift beds, and eating nothing but takeaway food, we felt in need of a little bit of luxury when we got to Napier.
We were travelling round the world for our 25th wedding anniversary, and had stayed in some wonderful places. So on the way we had a jokingly made up a list of all the comforts we were looking for. So we headed for the tourist info office and laid down our specifications.
They suggested and then booked us into The County.
And we found them here with abundance !!!
(Apart from the swimming pool, but there is access to one opposite)
We were initially given a room that was beautiful, but altho it had a balcony, our view wasn`t a pretty one, overlooking nothing but flat roofs and satellite dishes.
We politely enquired if there was a similar room, with a better outlook and were very kindly shown up to The Regal Suite for no extra cost.
It was superb, and fitted all of our requirements even down to the fire !!!
So spacious, it was almost ridiculous, beautifully clean and very tastefully furnished in the Art Deco style.
There was also a extensive wrap around balcony which comes in very handy for the smokers amongst us.
We paid the equivalent of £175 for a bed breakfast and 3 course a la carte evening meal package, for the two of us.
Unfortunately we were a little late down to dinner, because after a bottle of wine earlier, we couldn`t unlock our door (big old key and lock, gorgeous, but stiff !!!)
The food was absolutely delicious, and very artistically presented...along with a complimentary glass of champagne for our having been trapped in the room, which was very much appreciated, too.
Breakfast was also a culinary delight, and we loved the artwork in the restaurant, that the proprietor took great pride in pointing out to us. Which was followed by an interesting conversation on Salvador Dali and the wonders of Italy.
The staff were all very welcoming and helpful, nothing was too much trouble for any of them, including the restaurant staff, who I must apologise to, as we were possibly a tad too giggly when we finally made it to the table :)

All in all, this really was a very special place.

Room Tip: The Regal Suite

My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights at the end of January to attend a wedding at Church Road Winery, the hotel was recommended by friends who had stayed there before.
The hotel has a lovely old world charm with winding wooden staircases( and a lift) and a fascinating history ( it survived the Napier Earthquake and was a focal point during the rebuilding of the city). The hotel staff are really helpful and after a mix up with our superior room booking, they kindly upgraded us to the Presidential suite! The hotel is solidly built, so is nice and quiet so you do not get disturbed by other guests. The staff kindly gave me access to the hotel kitchen, in order to finish off the 2 tier wedding cake we had brought down from Auckland. There is an electronic shoe buffer/polisher beside the library.
The breakfasts ( included in our rate) were excellent and the restaurant was well worth booking for the evening( it does get busy) as the food was delicious and would give several upmarket Auckland establishments a run for their money. The complimentary nightly port in the library was lovely to sample following a walk along the promenade after dinner, the seafront is only round the corner from the hotel. The hotel has its own carpark across the road, which was great as we had hired a car at the airport to make it easier to get around. The Wine Centre next door to the carpark was well worth visiting to learn about the Vineyards in the area and had local wines for sale at reasonable prices. As said in other reviews the hotel is within walking distance of most things in Napier. The hotel has a lovely little bar on the corner which was great for meeting up with friends.
The different rooms have varying sized bathrooms, which you can check on the website before booking or phone and speak to the staff who we found were happy to describe the different aspects of each room.It was very hot while we were there but the air conditioning was good and kept us cool. We met the owner and his wife who were both very hospitable and knowledgeable about the area and all it has to offer, they clearly put a lot of effort into the smooth running of the hotel. This was an excellent base for visiting the many vineyards in the area. Only one tiny suggestion- the toiletries supplied in the bathrooms were pleasant, but we think they should be upgraded to match the overall quality of this lovely hotel.
We will definitely stay here if we visit Napier again.

Room Tip: Some rooms have a balcony so you can sit outside for a drink.

The County Hotel Napier is a nice, quaint hotel with a central location to downtown Napier. While the hotel is small, it has everything that you would need and want. The hotel is across the street from the New Zealand Wine Centre and the parking lot.

The hotel definitely prides itself as being old fashioned. The room has an old rotary telephone and the decor to match. There is a complimentary cell phone in the desk drawer that you can use during your stay. I found it just prior to leaving, but it looks like you buy minutes from the front desk. There is also a radio/cd player with some music for you to listen to. The internet was free and fast, without any issues during my stay. There is also a iron and ironing board for you to use.

The bathroom was small, but was big enough for its purpose. The tub also doubles as a shower. There is also a heated towel rack.

Each morning they place a personalized sheet of paper under your door which includes the weather report for the day. I thought that this was a nice touch. The library has a large selection of books, and you are free to take one with you as long as you are willing to leave one behind as well. The library is also where you can help yourself to the complimentary port.

The restaurant is small and the food is really good. It is recommended to make reservations as it fills up quickly with both hotel guests and outside visitors. I had the bed & breakfast rate so was able to eat breakfast in the morning as part of the rate. You can choose anything from the menu, which is varied and the portions are large.

I would definitely recommend the hotel, as you are in walking distance from several sites and restaurants.

We stayed two nights at the County Hotel in Napier, New Zealand, March 5th & 6th. The hotel has a great location for walking to all the sights in Napier, the "Art Deco Capital". The rooms are large and individually but tastefully decorated, with names of native New Zealand birds. Ours had a balcony to enjoy the beautiful weather of Hawks Bay. We ate one breakfast and one supper in the hotel restaurant; the cuisine is excellent. The hotel reminds me of something between an upscale B&B and a hotel. My wife LOVED the place. I thought it was very nice and would look forward to staying there again.

Room Tip: Get a room with a balcony if you can/want. There are no bad rooms in the place; we "snooped&quo...

Stayed here for 1 night on our tour around New Zealand. Loved the style of the hotel and the room was very spacious and luxurious. Slept well as the hotel was very quiet, even though we were right by the lift. Great location for a walk to the beach or into town. Staff in the hotel and restaurant were very accommodating and food was lovely.

We had a great weekend in Napier and stayed in the County Hotel.

If you are going to Napier and want to stay in a hotel in keeping with the towns character we would highly recommend this hotel. Motels are cheaper but for a few more dollars you get a lot more !!.

Make sure you have the breakfast !!

Room Tip: All seemed very good but always worth seeing them first if possible...

Although the building dates back to 1909, the hotel dates back only to the 1990s so if you are looking for a genuine historic hotel you will be disappointed. However, the conversion has been done very well apart from the odd niggle such as the old fashioned rotary indicator above the lift door that is still trundling down past 1 after you have got out at the ground floor. The County gives guests the feel of an old hotel but has all modern comforts. We really liked our room which was large and well laid out, our only criticism being that the toilet gets its natural light from the bedroom via a couple of glass tiles which meant that the bedroom got flooded with light if one of us went to the bathroom during the night. A blind that can be pulled down across the tiles would be useful. We found the restaurant at the County exceptionally good for dinner. The breakfasts were also good but we found the portion sizes and ingredients of the dishes varied between the two days that we stayed at the hotel.
