“Wonderful experience in Napier”
Reviewed 2 November 2013

Had a wonderful experience at the Masters Lodge. Joan and Larry were great hosts, very caring people. The accommodations were excellent and the food, one of the best we had on our trip in New Zealand. The house was decorated beautifully, warm and inviting. even on a raining day, it was very comfortable and cozy .

Room Tip: Rooms are colorful with great views!

I have only recently joined Tripadvisor to keep track of my travels and write reviews but have been a user for a few years now. I knew that when I did eventually start writing reviews, five star ratings would be reserved only for places which would be destinations on its own. Well, this is it, we came here first in 2005 and its been our favorite special treat ever since.

This exquisite art-deco lodge sits perched atop a hill overlooking Napier, and has just two suites, both of them elegantly, perfectly furnished. Your party and one other lucky couple will be only guests being looked after by Joan and Larry, the perfect hosts. They are kind, friendly, helpful and absolutely uncompromising about every aspect of their lodge - without being overbearing nor pretentious, perfection seems to come completely natural to them. Certainly, it takes a very special couple to run such a very special lodge.

The Kidnapper Suite, with breathtaking views of the ocean and a very large, sumptuous bed, has the bathroom and toilet in separate rooms across the small hallway. The Deco Suite, with a slightly smaller bed, has its own sun room, perfect for watching the sunset over a bottle of Hawke Bay wine, or doing this in the taking a nice long bath. Having stayed in both, it is harder to say which is better, because both of the rooms provide maximum comfort & quality of sleep, beautiful furnishings and stunning views. The library upstairs is a great room just to sit and read a book, or watch a DVD on a rainy day. Or, sit out on the porch downstairs and enjoy one of Joan's amazing cakes or enjoy a cocktail in their sitting room. Their garden is pretty too. Either way, take as much time as you can to enjoy the lodge itself; the house is maintained so immaculately that you feel you've slipped into a by-gone era.

Then on to food. Ok, Hawkes Bay is one of NZ's best wine destinations, so that is a given. But Joan and Larry have searched all over New Zealand for the best artisanal bread, cheese, vegetables, meats and seafood there is to be had. They invite a local chef to cook a 4 course dinner to your preferences, using fresh, local, seasonal produce, which is presented beautifully, served with the utmost care. The next morning, Joan and Larry cook your breakfast. Who knew paua tastes so delicious in eggs? Or have you had venison sausage ? Or home cured gravlax ? The breakfast overlooking the ocean on the porch is a highlight of my honeymoon that I would never forget.

You do not stay at the Master's Lodge to visit Napier. You visit Napier to stay at the Master's Lodge. Stay here once and you will agree with me.

Room Tip: If you enjoy nice long baths with a view, the Deco suite is great. If you and/ or your partner need...

Why stay here?.....how about the elevated, stunning views from the elevated verandah overlooking seaward to Cape Kidnappers. Breathtaking, but there's more.........Lovely interiors and magical stained-glass windows framing the stunning views.
Hosts are welcoming and even park your vehicle up their elevated limited parking. Breakfast was hearty and delicious, the coffee excellent.
this place is the hallmark of perfection.

Joan and Larry are impeccable hosts in an impeccable home, and they enhanced our stay in Napier more than we could have imagined. From the moment we arrived, we were treated with personal kindness, generosity and warmth. The attention to detail in the home decor, the remarkable breakfasts and the hospitality made this the most incredible B and B stay that we have ever had. Their recommendations regarding restaurants and wineries were wonderful, as were the conversations during breakfast and while having cocktails and wine. The overall ambience created a feeling of peace and comfort. We are looking forward to a return visit.

Joan and Larry were such wonderful hosts. In our opinion their B&B sets the standard for what all b&b's should be. Luxury and warmth were everywhere from the moment we arrived. Our room had an incredible view of the town and beach, and was decorated in the most beautiful Art Deco. The breakfasts exceeded our expectations, as did our daily cocktail hour. They even took the liberty of booking a reservation at a restaurant just to make sure we had a place to have dinner. It just doesn't get any better than this!

Had been out into the Crown Hotel which was dreadful and called our travel agent who luckily got us into Master's Lodge. Joan and Larry are superb hosts. The lodge us gorgeous --- great views and impeccable furnishings put together great taste. On arrive greeted with lovely offers of drinks and Joan's wonderful cakes, followed later by cocktails and then dinner at special places recommended by Larry. Breakfast is excellent. Both Larry and Joan love Nappier and offer great tips about the history if the city. where to go and what to see. We were into wines to their recommendations served us well.

An excellent choice making our stay superb.

Our recent stay at Master's Lodge was exceptional. In addition to the most beautiful art deco home in Napier, the views from the upstairs suites are breathtaking. but what really makes Master's Lodge so special is it's owners, Joan and Larry. Their personal attention to each of their guests was genuine and made us feel so comfortable in their home. Breakfast at Master's Lodge is an event unto itself, and easily the best we have had in New Zealand. We give Master's Lodge 5 stars and would highly recommend it
