Owner description: MTG Hawke's Bay is at home in the heart of Napier forming the cultural centre of this stylish city for over 150 years. MTG Hawke's Bay is a place where people, objects and ideas meet. MTG inhabits three buildings of distinct character - an art deco masterpiece, a modernist gem and a light-filled gallery that looks out across the magnificent Hawke Bay. MTG Hawke's Bay is home to a nationally significant collection of art and objects that form the foundation of distinctive exhibitions and a world-class research facility. The MTG Theatre hosts a lively programme of film and performing arts. MTG Hawke's Bay uses its collection to tell the stories of New Zealand with assurance and style. This is the place to get a fresh perspective on the stories you know including the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake. Here too the art that adorns our walls and the objects that fill our homes come together alongside precious photographs and documents to creatively illustrate the life stories of successive generations of New Zealanders. Visit our fabulous little shop selling a range of MTG publications and merchandise inspired by the magic of the Museum collections. MTG Hawke's Bay welcomes visitors from all over the world to share in the complex and fascinating history of New Zealand through the lens of a distinct and characterful region.

Great museum but seeing that the local council make all other business owners in the CBD go Art Deco style with there buildings why didn't they at least have some Art Deco style in the outside of this building especially considering its position and importance.

Thanks for visiting, and for posting your comments. We're receiving great feedback about the new wing and how its modern style compliments the neighbouring Art Deco buildings. Also, the original part of the museum is still an iconic Art Deco building. We hope to see you at MTG again soon.
Best wishes from MTG Management team

“Excellent Renewal”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 November 2013

MTG has just reopened after a major upgrade. They have done a great job retaining the old while incorp0rating a new wing. Great area on the earthquake and another on the history of Napier. There are two sections like bridge wings on a ship which give you a fantastic outlook.

“Nicely varied”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 November 2013

The MTG is, as its name suggests, a museum, a theatre and an art gallery. The new building is lovely, spacious and in keeping with its surroundings (though, as seems to be the modern vogue, some of the lighting is perhaps a bit too subdued). We didn't get to see a theatre production but enjoyed the art work and the fascinating local social history. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and even volunteered to research something for me and email me with the result.

Thank you very much for your visit and for reviewing MTG Hawke's Bay. We're pleased you had such a good experience here and look forward to hosting you again in the future. Just a note on the low lighting - the lights in some areas/galleries need to be kept low so the objects are not damaged over time. Works such as paper and textiles can only be exposed to certain lighting levels to ensure that are kept in great condition to be enjoyed by future generations.
Thanks and Best wishes from the MTG Management Team

“A new museum, but not that interesting”

Nice building, but the contents didn't do much for either of us. Perhaps it'll get better. It had only just opened after a refurbishment.

“MTG is worth a visit!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 November 2013

As a resident of Napier and a 'friend' of MTG, I was keen to see what our new look Museum was like.
On the whole I was pleasantly surprised, having heard some negative comments.
The Earthquake display is wonderful, much better than the old one. It is a really poignant reminder of what occurred in 1931 and how Napier/Hastings rose again from the ashes with vision and cooperation.
I was disappointed at the 'shop'. It was my favourite place to buy cards in the past and I found the few items there were very expensive...$25 for a tin mug?
Some of the signage upstairs is rather low (and I'm only 155cm!!) and friends have complained about backache after trying read them!
Having said that, I would certainly recommend a visit. The exhibits give a flavour of what 'Hawkes's Bay is about now and in the past.
