Owner description: MTG Hawke's Bay is at home in the heart of Napier forming the cultural centre of this stylish city for over 150 years. MTG Hawke's Bay is a place where people, objects and ideas meet. MTG inhabits three buildings of distinct character - an art deco masterpiece, a modernist gem and a light-filled gallery that looks out across the magnificent Hawke Bay. MTG Hawke's Bay is home to a nationally significant collection of art and objects that form the foundation of distinctive exhibitions and a world-class research facility. The MTG Theatre hosts a lively programme of film and performing arts. MTG Hawke's Bay uses its collection to tell the stories of New Zealand with assurance and style. This is the place to get a fresh perspective on the stories you know including the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake. Here too the art that adorns our walls and the objects that fill our homes come together alongside precious photographs and documents to creatively illustrate the life stories of successive generations of New Zealanders. Visit our fabulous little shop selling a range of MTG publications and merchandise inspired by the magic of the Museum collections. MTG Hawke's Bay welcomes visitors from all over the world to share in the complex and fascinating history of New Zealand through the lens of a distinct and characterful region.

This new building looks great from the outside, but the small area of display space disappoints. While the earthquake section is interesting, there is little else of note.
The entrance foyer is large and a waste of space that could be put to better use.
The entrance fee of $15 is a rip-off as other council operated museums in NZ are free.
For the large amount of money spent upgrading this site, a better design and use could have been made by architects, engineers etc.
I notice similar reviews by others with similar disappointments.
Shame really! as Napier is a great city and deserves better.

After looking forward to going to the revamped Napier museum we were very disappointed the old museum seemed to contain more than the larger new one.
Lots big empty rooms with well spaced out exhibits .
Napier has a great history fill it up and put more on show.

The gallery side of this did not interest us but we always like to take our children to museums to learn about the local history when we are visiting. The museum was a let down after visiting the old one 4 years ago. Over priced for what was there.

I recently visited the MTG in Napier with family. We were all disappointed in everything apart from the earthquake exhibition, the design of the building and the friendly staff. Top marks for those things.
It was certainly not a museum, and if it was a gallery it was meagre in it's exhibits.
The lighting was poor around the letters and documents making them difficult to read when leaning over the cabinets.
There are issues I know about storage space.........I AM NOT SURPRISED!
Where are all the exhibits everyone wants to see?
In the basement maybe
Would this not solve the storage issue putting them on display

The new building looks great; unfortunately the exhibitions didn't measure up. I was really looking forward to visiting MTG, having read a couple of reviews lauding the extension. But the exhibitions felt disconnected and even the permanent section on the earthquake lacked depth. We expected more for $15/person.
