I stayed in the Garden Room with my late husband in 2005 and again at Easter 2009, this time with my son. Rayma and Phillip were very kind and asked me if I'd like to stay in the Garden room again. The room was comfortable, had all that one needed and I slept well. I can't praise Rayma and Phillip enough for the way they look after their guests. They have a lovely home. If I ever return to Napier I shall be staying at Cobden Garden Homestay and would recommend it to anybody who wants a place to stay there. A glass of New Zealand wine in the early evening, a delicious breakfast and a comfortable room, Rayma and Phillip will provide all of those. We were happy to have our photo taken.

After all these years you remember us and yes we do remember your visits also. Your second was tinged with sadness but hopefully we provided an opportunity for you to look back on happy memories with your late husband. As I remember it your son was at a crossroad in his life. It is our wish that you are both now happily settled into your changed circumstances.Thank you for writing about us on Trip Advisor we do appreciate it.

Stayed here to scout out possible places for Wills & Kate to stay. They didn't but it's first on our list anyway. Rayma and Phillip were excellent hosts, who we rapidly took to our hearts. Especially liked Phillip's extensive CD collection of Kiwi films! Great room with first class en-suite facilities. Excellent breakfast served to order with some fruit juice I'd never heard of (my ignorance!). Evening snacks and drinks on the patio set us up for each evening. Excellent suggestions were provided for meals out. Joy to be there. Not really that far to go.

John, we too are a little disappointed we did not get to meet Kate, Wills and George personally, but thank you for the recommendation. If they had made it to Napier they may have experienced much better weather than in Wellington - we are known as sunny Hawke's Bay - and we do have some baby toys that would have kept George entertained and as you mentioned quite a few NZ DVDs that Mum and Dad could have relaxed in front of. We are however so pleased you enjoyed yourselves and hopefully we did have sunny skies during your visit.. Thank you for taking time to write this review and we certainly look forward to a return visit. Be aware we do reward you with a discount when you return.

I have to say I detected an odour of cat in this home stay. I stayed at the house with my husband whilst my brother stayed at a place on lighthouse. He paid half the price, for at least equal service. Felt pressured to write in visitors book and to be photographed. Average.

Your review really saddens us. Primarily that you felt so badly about your visit and did not take the opportunity to discuss this with us face to face. We try very hard to make our guests welcome and comfortable. This is reflected in the majority of the comments about our bed and breakfast.
It seems your comment about the cat smell relates to allegations in a previous review and this is very upsetting for us as the cat they refer to and his brother died in the middle of last year and our emotions are still very raw. However your comfort is our priority and I would like you to be more specific about the area the smell came from. The whole house had been vacuumed and dusted that morning and the room thoroughly cleaned after the previous visitors.
We do invite the guests to write in the guest book as a record of your visit. Our visitors can easily refuse if they feel the need. We are sorry you felt you were pressured to do this. The comment you entered in our guestbook - “Wonderful stay thank you for your hospitality“- seemingly does not reflect your attitude in this review. However, we will be careful in future that this invite does not come across as a requirement. We do have a number of return visitors and they enjoy looking through the book to find their previous entries.
Similarly with the photo. We consider this an invitation only and feel refusal is easy. Photographs help us recognise return guests or guests who have made recommendations. We do not publish them or in any way circulate them.
With respect to pricing, please do remember in any comparison that your brother would have paid a single price and you and your husband travelled on a package tour organised by an agent so you have not paid us directly for your stay. I know agents do not divulge what you pay to stay with each provider but you can of course quickly find our prices through our website. Bear in mind, we are Qualmark accredited, belong to our local tourism group and the New Zealand B&B association and carry all the necessary insurances and certifications, all of which do add to the cost of operating.
Again we are sorry your visit was not ideal. We are sorry you were not able to get to know us more by joining the social hour or having refreshments on arrival. Opportunities we provide to enhance your stay with us. Thank you for taking time to review us and we hope the rest of your New Zealand holiday was more successful.

Everything about this place was great. Had a wonderful welcome and asked to join the hosts/ other guests for pre dinner drinks and nibbles. This was so lovely as we sat round chatting for over an hour, finding out about our hosts and the other travellers. The room was lovely as was the en suite. Our only mistake was only staying for one night.

Thank you for your review and for describing some of the things we are always willing to help guests arrange. Our experience in our area makes something that can be quite time consuming for our guests, relatively easy for us to arrange. We do try to keep ourselves abreast of what is available in our area so we are able to make informed suggestions.
We really appreciate that you took the time to share this with Trip Advisor readers.

We really enjoyed our stay here, cannot emphasise how hospitable the host are. They were only to pleased to organise trips, taxis and restaurant bookings. The food was great, plenty of choice. Nothing was too much trouble ..........thank you Rayma and Phillip, you made our stay most enjoyable.

Room Tip: All rooms are very good, facilities excellent.

We are so glad we were able to introduce you to Cabernet Franc. This is a special wine from our region. Hawke's Bay is known for excellent red wine - although we do not have any difficulty finding great white ones also - and it is always great that Australian wine buffs do enjoy our red wines.
Thank you for taking the time to review us. It is greatly appreciated.

The highlight stay of our trip to New Zealand. Phillip and Rayma are the ideal hosts and share this beautiful historic house on the bluff in Napier. Our room was spacious with a superb bathroom as well and views out to the harbour. Days started with a lovely breakfast and ended with wine and canapés with the hosts and other guests, giving an opportunity to taste those wines you had missed on the way around the vineyards or to find out the best places to go next day. Highly recommended. Thank you both for a lovely stay.

Thank you so much for your generous and kind review. Phillip and I do make every effort to be welcoming and try to provide a great experience for our guests and are delighted we were a highlight of your holiday. The evening wine time is a great opportunity for everyone to share their experiences and ideas with other guests. You all become tour guides in our beautiful region and country. Again thank you.
