“Nice facade, disappointing room”
Reviewed 30 January 2014

We left our bookings til the last minute, and this was one of the few available, affordable places in Paihia over the holiday week. (The prices appeared to be unreasonably jacked up everywhere.) The lobby was nice, modern and clean, and the manager on duty could not have been nicer or more helpful with directions, advice, etc. The pool area looked nice from afar, but we didn't use it. We had high hopes for the room, but alas... we were on the ground floor, and our view was of the very cramped parking lot and the back of a concrete building. The room itself was of a decent size, but very outdated. It was the only room, in all of our travels throughout NZ, that didn't have a kitchenette. It did have a fridge and an electric kettle. No kitchen sink. A French Press coffee maker, two coffee mugs, two wine glasses and two teaspoons. That's it. The wine glasses smelled like they had been washed with bath soap in the bathroom sink. Ugh. The carpeting and furniture were dingy, and the shower fixtures were quite badly rusted. The family upstairs sounded like a herd of elephants, but I guess you can't fault the hotel for that. On the up side, the bed was comfortable, and the location was great - walking distance to town, waterfront, ferry to Russell. Small consolation; we would not stay here again.

Room Tip: Find another hotel.

I booked into the larger rooms here simply because they had Air conditioning. Staff were friendly and more than happy to help.

Rooms were at the back of the property but parking was plentiful. The room however was dirty, very dirty - lampshades, skirting boards, the couch, door frames, glasses - all covered in dust!
It was as if this room had not been used for a long time. The beds were perfect condition as were the towels so at least one thing was ok.

TV reception was shocking and went out dot on the 6pm news (apparently an issue in the area). There are no plugs available next to the desk as there is a router and massive aerial plugged in which I didn't want to unplug (thinking it must be the wifi). There is a massive lamp (covered in dust) on the desk which you can't plug in as all the plugs are taken and is in the way. The chairs supplied in the room don't fit under the desk properly so I was working leaning over the whole time.

The wifi in the room was up and down - would work fine for 1 minute then just come completely unresponsive (this is on different devices - Ipad, Lapop and phone). There is no cellphone reception AT ALL on Vodafone in the room so I could not resort to using mobile internet or taking work calls!

I left after one night, the staff were happy to refund me and I can't complain that I slept bad. No offering of room service breakfast and the hotel's restaurant was higher priced than the Copthorne down the road (which I stayed at the following night). Accross from this hotel there are a lot of backpacker pubs and food places so it wasn't hard for me to find a good dinner.

Three other flaws; Rust in the shower, A rusted and HAZARDOUS bathtub could cut your hand if you're not watching as is eaten away with rust and the heat pump had dirty liquid all over it - strange!

I would not stay again and certainly would ward those with skin allergies to stay away. I hope that the owners really clean up this place as its prime location and has so much potential.

Wow, We were not ready for how nice the room was. Great room. Great service. Food and alcohol are expensive in NZ so the restaurant and bar reflected that. The pool was nice, but the pool and surrounding deck could use a cleaning. We loved it.

Had a wonderful couple of days at this resort. Rooms clean and spacious, although maybe a little tired and worn on the outside. Lovely view of a palm tree where kingfishers and Tui birds often flew in and out. Was sat watching for ages. Cute small pool area. Staff very friendly. Hotel about 10 minute walk from center.

We stayed here as part of an APT tour in December 2013. The hotel is reasonably located close to the beach and the resort activites, bars and shops. There is a good swimming pool and spa . However, there was no airconditioning (an electric fan was provided) and the service at breakfast was not good - nobody seemed to be monitoring and restocking the buffet - food and teabags ran out whilst staff kept bringing clean plates from the kitchen for non-existant further customers. The coffee was boiling in a large urn. There was free wi-fi in the reception area which was a bonus.

Room Tip: Ask for an upper floor bedroom towards the back of the hotel to get a better view.

Nice place to stay. Close to the beach and other activities. Room was large and comfortable. Staff was friendly and courteous. We ended up being delayed, and arrived late, The front desk was closed, but we found a host who came back and got us into our room, then asked if we could check-in in the mourning. Great place to stay.
