“Cook's Lookout after Cyclone Lusi”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 March 2014

We stayed here as a couple for 2 nights in the aftermath of Cyclone Lusi. Norm and Shelagh gave us a warm welcome after our "bus flight" up from Auckland (Kerikeri airport was closed, so Air NZ put on a bus instead from Auckland Airport). From then on, they were unfailingly helpful with advice about places to see and how to get there, recommendations for a nice place to eat after a long day's travel, and even an offer to drop us off at the restaurant. Down in central Paihia they were still cleaning up days after the storm, but up at Cook's Lookout all was peaceful and serene - and once the storm had passed over, the view was as magnificent as the website promised (the view of starry skies at night was equally amazing.) We enjoyed the room and the view and also enjoyed chatting to Norm and Shelagh about their life in Paihia and what brought them here. Thanks again, warmly recommended. .

I write this review after travelling across both North and South Islands and having experienced a variety of accommodation. At the time we felt disappointed in the standard of the accommodation here but reserved judgement as we had just started our holiday and had nothing to compare it with. I now can write that our initial experience is correct and the quality of accommodation for the price point could not be justified. The views were indeed sensational but the accommodation itself looked tired and the bedroom cramped and furnishings of not particularly good quality. No problems with cleanliness but overall the apartment seemed to need some investment to bring it up to he standard of the majority of apartments we stayed in.

We stayed here as part of a large wedding party and the co-operation could not have been better. Great work from Norm and Shelagh, with perfect arrangements and a warm welcome for us all.

The rooms as exactly as per the reviews here; slightly dated decor but spotlessly clean, well appointmented with kitchen utilisities and most have a fantastic view down the bay to Pahia. Showers were excellent and the beds comfortable, but I suspect the pull out sittees are best suited for one child (or maybe 2 small ones).

BBQ area is excellent and one night we fed over 30 thanks to Norm bringing down his own BBQ for us to use!

We have no hesittation is recommending this hotel to others and it seems reasonable value compared to others in the town. You probably need a car as it is a little out of town (5 minute drive), but there is also a shuttle you can use that is readily offered.

Room Tip: Make sure you get a view (almost all rooms). It's magic!

We were given a warm and friendly greeting by Norm before being taken to our unit at the top of the site. Our room was clean and comfortable in very slightly dated kind of way. The kitchen area was very well equipped with utensils, cutlery and crockery etc. The shower in the bathroom was excellent and we enjoyed using the decking area outside our room which gave fantastic views across the bay to Waitangi. It was lovely watching the swallows swooping around at the end of each day. There was a DVD player with the TV and there were plenty of DVDs that could be borrowed in Reception. I enjoyed a late afternoon swim in the pool and appreciated the use of substantial pool towels, however, be aware there is no shade around the pool if you use it in the day. There was an allocation of free WiFi available. Paihia is a short drive away and there is free all day parking if you stop on the seafront just as you get down to the town.

We enjoyed a very friendly & helpful welcome from Norm & Shelagh and their great sense of humour!

Our spacious, well equipped & spotlessly clean apartment had a nice hot shower and comfy bed, excellent free wifi and plenty of power sockets.

But best of all was the most fabulous view perched above the bays of Paihia and Russell from its large verandah. The views of the sunsets, stars & sunrise were quite stunning!

The motel has a large heated outdoor pool, again with a great view, and towels provided.

It is a few kilometres out of Paihia, just past the Waitangi Treaty Ground and close to Haruru Falls.

So if you want to be in the midst of the hustle and bustle of Paihia then this is not for you. If on the other hand you want tranquility with fabulous views and only a short drive into Paihia then Cook's Lookout is the ideal choice.

We loved it and highly recommend it.

TIP: If you book direct with Cook's Lookout, you could pay less than you would through the various booking agencies.

(Incidentally we apparently stayed in the same room that previous reviewer clinksty? claimed to have had a problem with. I can only think they had some other agenda.)

We stayed here 3 nights and would happily have stayed longer if only to sit on the patio and admire the view. The rooms have everything you need and a terrific shower. Norm and Shelagh are excellent hosts and even offered to drive us in to town for dinner so we could both have a drink.

The advertising really does reflect reality - the picture above was taken from the room next to my 1 bedroom apartment I'm sure. If you don't mind paying for top quality, this is the Bay of Islands Motel for you. Norm and Shelagh are great hosts, the unit was spotless with every amenity, and the heated pool is worth many a long wallow. The motel is only 5 minutes drive from Pahia, but tens of decibels quieter with no traffic or crowd noise. I'll be back if I come this way again.
