“Cook's Lookout - totally satisfying!”
Reviewed 9 October 2008

Norm and Shelagh had given us easy-to-follow directions to reach Cook's Lookout without hassle. They gave us a warm welcome and quickly had us installed in our unit.

The view over the river and out to the ocean was sensational. The unit was compact but well laid out with all the equipment needed for self-catering if required and outdoor furniture for sitting out to either dine or just admire the view.. Most impressively the unit was immaculately clean and tidy.

Cook's Lookout is a few minutes easily navigable drive out of town and the local supermarket is on the way. Summing up, Cook's Lookout is a quality property at reasonable cost with plenty of touring advice and warmth from the proprietors.

Yes, the view is quite possibly the most beautiful you will see at any motel in New Zealand but what impressed us more was the “feel factor” at Cooks Lookout Motel in Paihia.

The motel’s exterior is retro (in that ‘takes you back to your childhood’ kind of way) but the interior is modern and family friendly. Norm and Shelagh, the proprietors, were thoughtful enough to put us in Unit 8, which flows from the modest patio area to the trampoline and enclosed swimming pool. The spa pool, which is housed in its own pavilion, provided ample opportunities for both parents and children to unwind and relax after a day’s activities that were kindly organised by Norm and Shelagh.

The units are furnished unpretentiously. The unit’s bathroom was immaculately clean and the fittings modern. The shower pressure deserves special mention because the water flowed rather than dribbled, as it does in so many motel/hotel bathrooms. There was a wide range of cooking implements provided and we did choose to eat in twice and watch the changing hues of colour on the estuary and sky as dusk turned to night.

On a final note - we discovered upon arriving home that we had misplaced our digital camera. We were unsure of where we had left it; in fact we weren’t even certain we had left it at Cook’s Lookout Motel at all. We phoned Norm who carried out a thorough reccy of the unit and discovered it down the side of one of the couches. We appreciated the extra effort he went to, to retrieve it for us. Thank you so much, Norm.

We had a wonderful stay at the Cook's Lookout Sept 11-13th. Not knowing much about hotels in Paihia we went by our search on the web. True to it's word this property has the most spectacular view and is situated so that each room gets a fanastic view. A Woolworth's supermarket is a short drive away and open 7am-10pm so it's very convenient given the rooms have cooking facilities. This makes for a great breakfast out on the deck. The town center is about 3km away so it's a very easy drive for dining out at night.

Norm and Shelagh were great hosts. Like most New Zealander's they were so friendly and wanted to be sure we were having a great time. They brought us extra ice without even having to ask (knowing Americans often do like to have ice on hand). Laundry facilities onsite made it great to freshen up the clothes since we had decided to pack light on this 2 week holiday in NZ.

Their recommendation and assistance in booking great boat trip into the bay as well as suggstions on restaurants in Pahia were appreciated very much.

The room itself is very freshly decorated and modern with flat screen TV. The bed was most comfortable and the bath was exceptional. We will gladly stay at this property with the "million dollar view" again.

My wife & I were looking for a quiet getaway to de-stress ourselves after near-burnout from our own business in Auckland. Cooks Lookout met our needs perfectly.

I remembered its stunning scenery from some years before and gave it a quick ring. By 7pm we were there and were being made most welcome by Norm & Shelaigh.

We didn't leave our room till after 2pm the next day - How could we? With two large ranch sliders in our room, the views were not only spectacular but clearly visible from our pillows!!

We did evenytually get up and have breakfast outside on our private deck getting even closer to nature and breathing in its pristine air (ie. this motel complex is totally Smoke Free).

Norm & Shelaigh fitted in with us perfectly, making up our rooms after we'd gone into town that afternoon. They also allowed us a late checkout the following day after our trip to the Hole in the Rock.

After reading a couple of the other reviews upon getting home I tried to find some things to complain about. Yes, the spa had been out of action while we were there. And while the pool was spotless & inviting, it was far too cold for us for this time of the the year. And yes, the TV had the same old crud we have at home.

But none of that was why we travelled 3 hours from Auckland on the spur of the moment just to be there. The Bay of Islands is truly one of the most beautiful places in the world. I doubt we could have enjoyed it as much from any other motel than Cooks Lookout.

Donna & I treat people as we find them. We treated Norm & Shelaigh with respect and got the same back.

And if anyone is looking for something else relaxing to do in the Bay of Islands, we recommend Darryl's Dinner Cruise. A trifle expensive once we settled our bar tab but the food & the company & the leisurely criuse were superb.

We are happy that this delightful couple enjoyed their stay with us and are sorry that they were unable to use our Spa/Jacuzzi Room as their visit coincided with the re-painting of the interior, which has now been completed.
Spring has come late to New Zealand this year so, yes, the pool has been quite cold lately, but this week will see the completion of the installation of an extensive Solar Heating System for our large Salt-water Swimming Pool which should hugely benefit our guests from now on.

I booked this on recommendation from one of my travel buddies without taking much of at it.

We were three girls on a rather hectic travel itinerary that included Australia with Tasmania, and New Zealand for two weeks. I must say I have never done a trip without going through some kind of all inclusive or tour group so having to plan everything while not knowing anything about the place I'm visiting got me a little anxious.

New Zealand, I heard from someone at the Auckland airport, was known for their hospitality. However, we didn't find that too much during our one week stay there, especially in the Auckland area. Overall we had pretty bad service and luck with our travel there.

However, Norm and Shelagh, the owners of Cook's Lookout, definitely upheld the reputation of total hospitality. Before we arrived, at the online booking, I received a personal welcome email from them right away and directions to their place. I took that as invitation to ask more about activities we can do in the area. And sure enough, they responded at length about all the suggestions they had for us and encouraged us to not drive up to Cape Reinga (it turned out to be true that it is a very dangerous drive, plus, we wouldn't have been able to drive on the beach like the coach bus took us, which was splendid). They took care of all the bookings we wanted so for those two days of the trip I didn't have to worry about anything.

On that first night we arrived, they stayed up to wait for us because we got in late (past 11pm?) from the long drive through the rain from the airport. Welcomed us and so did their two kitties. Made sure we were comfortable and offered us a small breakfast in the early morning because we were to go on an early tour. Even ranged us when the bus came and I hadn't come out yet.

In the evening Norm even made arrangements with their favorite restaurant in town to have them receive us, although we ended up not going for reasons on my group's end.

The next day we were offered late checkout because Norm knew we had a boating tour that wouldn't get back in til the afternoon. He just extended as much hospitality as he possibly could and always without us even having to ask. Felt like if it's in his capability to do something for his guests, he is always happy to do so.

Being there just felt like being taken care of in every detail by family :)

Btw, did I mention? The view from the room is just beautiful. Felt very safe there, quiet. There's a woolworth's close by if needing groceries or anything. This was really just wonderful hospitality which I did not see again afterwards unfortunately. But I would recommend this to fellow travelers who want to see the Far North, which is just a beautiful area rich with Maori culture.

The accommodation was easy to find and of an excellent standard.
We wanted somewhere that we could relax as the weather was questionable and we might not have got out as much as in the summer. We were so happy with the room, the view of the whole bay and Waitangi and the service from Shelagh and Norm. They even set up the spa just for us for the duration of our stay, even though we were the only guests.
It is just 5 minutes from the township of Paihia but this can be an advantage as you leave behind the hustle and bustle and go back to tranquility. It is however well placed to go further north to Keri-Keri via the falls.
All in all we couldn't have asked fo r any more from this accommodation or the hosts....highly recommended

We have just spent a second very enjoyable holdiay at Cooks Lookout Motel. We spend 10 nights at the motel in November and a further 3 nights, most recently.

We stayed in an immaculately clean 2 bedroom appartment. The living area is extremely spacious, modern, well maintained and has the most spectacular views from the window and deck surrounding the appartment. We had our baby and toddler with us on both occasions and they were well catered for, with a porta cot, high chair and baby bath being provided.

Shelagh and Norm were always helpful and friendly on both occasions and willing to make suggestions regarding trips/places to visit etc. They went out of their way to make our stay more enjoyable. We would not hesitate to recommend the motel and certainly intend staying again.
