“Fantastic views, friendly proprietor, comfortable accommodation”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 March 2010

We recently stayed at Cook's Lookout, Paihia, New Zealand - the welcome was friendly, and the accommodation was quite comfortable, although not ultra modern in style. It was clean and all the facilities you need were available. We were fortunate to stay in the accommodation with the best views over the Bay of Islands - and as per the website info we could see the magnificent view whilst lying in bed! There was a patio area with table and chairs where you could sit out and admire the views. It was a very peaceful location and only a short drive to the centre of paihia, where we sampled some very nice meals - Lips Restaurant recommended by the owner of Cook's Lookout was especially good. There is a communal outside pool area with loungers, and BBQ area if required. The road up to the accommodation is quite steep, but hence the wonderful views. We would definitely stay again if we are lucky enough to return to New Zealand.

A beautiful place to stay - it was recommended to us by friends and they weren't wrong! The rooms are well-kept and comfortable, there are small shops and a take-away close by, Shelagh and Norm are very helpful and pleasant - what more can you ask? (Do take mosquito repellent with you if you intend sitting outside to watch the sunset though)

This was our 3rd time of staying here. The first in 2000 and the 2nd in 2004 just after Norm and Shelagh took over when it was much neglected and in a sorry state (green swimming pool water). This has now changed.
The whole site is smoking free which was blissful after some other motels we stayed in during a 2 week tour of NZ North Island. Furthermore, it is very peaceful and is located away from the main roads so there is not the constant roar of heavy traffic at any time day or night that we experienced in other locations.
The rooms have been tastefully refurbished to a high standard with all mod cons in the kitchen area, including an electric frying pan. Norm and Shelagh have done everything to make their guests feel welcome and comfortable. The bonus must be the stunning views (see the web site - it is true) and now of course the very welcoming swimming pool with a communal BBQ on the side where many 'chefs' can cook with the obligatory glass of wine.
Internet access is not free but it is at a very reasonable price and the wireless access is very good.
We went back despite our experiences in 2004 and we were not disappointed in any way in fact we were delighted and have no regrets. It is a good centre for touring the surrounding area. We heard that the very local shop does an excellent take away; we preferred to cook our own. Woolworths, a large supermarket, is only a few minutes drive away and stocks a very wide range of provisions. You can also get a discount on petrol at participating garages when you spend over a set amount.
Norm and Shelagh are there to help with any problems and will give advice on local attractions.
We heartily recommend Cook’s Lookout and we look forward to staying there again.

My husband and I and our 9 yr old daughter spent our last precious days relaxing here in Feb 2010. We stayed in Room 8, the best view ever. The stars at night are fantastic. The pool is great after a hot day and the barbeque was great for king prawns. Our daughter especially liked the view whilst trampolining! Will try a get back sometime.

We booked this on the internet from the UK, as we were looking for a place to chill out after 5 weeks travelling in New Zealand and the views from Cook's Lookout looked amazing. We were not disappointed. In fact the only disappointment was in arriving a day early and finding it full! But Norm and Shelagh rang around and booked us into a motel in Pahia for the night and gave us some tips on where to go next day, assuring us our room would be ready as and when we arrived.
Cook's Lookout did not disappoint....the views, the pool, the stars, the trips they booked for us and the only time in our 3 months of travels we managed to see the Southern Cross. We would certainly recommend this motel to any of our friends who travel to NZ

We are currently on holiday in New Zealand again. This time with some friends and we stopped at Cook's Lookout for two nights whilst showing them around the Northlands.

We first stayed with Norm and Shelagh in 2007 and they were wonderful hosts then, as they still are today. We stayed in units 5 & 9, which had recently been refurbished, as had the other rooms, to a very high standard.

As I wrote before, the views are certainly “Million Dollar”, and I still think you would be very hard pressed to find another hotel in Paihia with such a magnificent vista. This time we did use the pool and it was wonderful, the solar heating makes it really luxurious.

Internet access is now just 10 dollars for the whole length of your stay, and I would certainly recommend anyone who visits Paihia to stay here.

As other contributors have said, this is a quiet, secluded motel with beautiful views. It is an excellent place for travellers to recharge their batteries, and provides a good base for activities in the area. We liked it so much that we extended our planned stay. The two-bedroom unit we were allocated was very roomy, beautifully decorated, immaculately clean, and although it was not detached we were unaware of any noise from our neighbours. Not only was there a detached guest laundry (including a dryer) but there was a generous-sized washing line and pegs supplied! Norm and Shelagh are attentive and caring hosts, and, as others have found, gave us useful advice about what to see (they are agents for a number of tours but not pushy). If you want to eat out and have a drink you'll need a taxi, but why not just get some food from Woolworths (not 5 minutes away by car), eat in, then look at the stars. For us, this place was a highlight of a trip round North and South Islands.
