“Good value, but SSSHHHHHHH”
Reviewed 14 May 2012

We stayed at Cap'n Bob's for three nights in April. Our four person bedroom was clean, functional and very reasonably priced. Other good points include the kitchen and barbecue, ample car parking and short walk to the main drag.

What we didn't realise before our arrival is that this hostel is really aimed at couples and older travellers. You can't use the outdoor areas after 10pm and Cap'n Bob has a zero tolerance policy towards noise after this time. This is obviously a blessing if you are looking for some peace and quiet, but a pain in the a'se if you were hoping to enjoy some drinks with fellow guests.

We stayed three nights in the studio from Capt‘n Bobs beach house and we really enjoyed our stay. It is very well located, just a few steps away from the beach, but not on the main road. It is a very quiet and clean hostel. The kitchen was well equipped, clean and organized. Most exceptional was the friendly staff. Jo gave us good tips, what to do in the region and booked for us a boat trip, where we got a discount because of her.

Captain Bob's is a total must for those looking for a relaxed, home from home, friendly hostel experience. From the moment I arrived, Jo, the manager, made me feel so welcomed. I booked initially for 5 days but ended up staying for 2 weeks! Jo and the crew work very hard to keep this place so clean and it really shows. The hostel is located on a slight incline which means you can watch the sea views from the lounge, dining room/kitchen and the balcony. I also recommend eating out on the balcony - it's incredible! I booked a single room and was delighted to find a double bed. The room was comfortable and very clean. As a solo traveller it was lovely to chill in the lounge, especially in the evening, and read or listen to music. There was a great vibe here and a good mixture of age groups. I can't thank Jo enough for making my stay here so enjoyable. I really wish you all the very best for the future Jo.

Room Tip: Room 6 is located at the end of the balcony. What more could you want than to wake up with views out...

Jo (the manager/owner) works hard to make your stay here as comfortable as possible - and succeeds! Clean, comfortable rooms and plenty of space in the kitchen/dining area. Take breakfast on the balcony as the sun rises over the hill and watch the Bay come alive. Unbeatable.

I managed to get myself a single room at Captain Bob's for my one night in Paihia and I wasn't disappointed!

On arriving, I was given a tour of the accomodation and was a bit gutted I was only staying the night!!

My room was large, bright and airy and seemed to have a double bed, despite it being a 'single room'. The upstairs communal area was lovely - well equipped kitchen & dining area, comfy and spacious living area and a fantastic balcony to watch the bay of islands sunset with dinner and a glass of wine.

The main bathroom was great - ample showers which were hot and powerful, a row of sinks as well as a couple of washing machines & tumble dryers. There was another shower/toilet room upstairs which I didn't need/use.

The staff were really friendly and helped me sort out a booking for the Cultural Night at the Treaty Grounds.

There was a short list of 'house rules' in my room which were completely reasonable and mainly in place to keep the noise down for guests as well as their neighbours. With that in mind, Captain Bob's isn't the kind of place to stay if you want an in-house bar and partying until 3am, but great if you want to stay in a home away from home where you can meet nice people and live in comfortable surroundings.

Room Tip: Room 1 is a large single and close to the bathroom. You also get to wake up to the sound of waves c...
