“Nice hostel, good value”

Great little hostel in good though quiet location. Very clean and good value, lots of free extras like kajaks, bikes, etc.
Tony at the reception was very helpful and friendly. Would recommend to stay!

My boyfriend and I stayed for almost a month at Centabay Lodge. The location just in the centre of Paihia is great and its just a 2 minutes-walk to the beach. It is is clean hostel with a big kitchen and a fireplace in the living room. We enjoyed the spa, the kajaks, the games room (with a pool table and table soccer) and the big choice of second-hand books. Also there is a mandarin tree in the garden where you can pick fresh mandarins.
Jack the owner is a friendly helpful guy. We stayed in a double room and havent had any problems with noises.
We recommend to stay there! For us it was the best place to stay in Paihia!

Room Tip: The rooms in the second floor are brighter.

We stayed 1 week with my girl friend there. Before going i saw all the comments here and i was a little scared, but actually it turn out to be a very nice place. te prices are the same than all the other backpackers in the "backpacker street", the difference beeing that this one is really nice, more like a big house (we stayed in the backpacker street 1 night and it was awfull... lots of people doing noise and drinking in the street, and the kind that scare you). In Centabay we fell at home. There wasn't any noise during the night, and its IN the center of Paihia, best place!
I would recommend to stay there. Everyone was quite helpful and i would totally go back there

I stayed here for a week.. it was awful. It was dirty, the room was never cleaned (so dirty). Just a bunch of German backpackers running and screaming around whilst high at all hours in the morning. As for the staff, well they were useless. Management (hippy looking guy) was AWFUL (who hires these people?!) the guy was just some hippy that was in love with himself and was never around to help. So you may come to check in and he will just be locked away in his bedroom and was just angry whenever he was disturbed (he needs to learn how to do his job). There is a tv and they say you can watch dvds on it.. however who do you need to ask to turn it on.. management and they control it from their room- so don't think about watching a film after 9-10pm!
You also don't get use of any free kayak- apparenlty they said we are no longer allowed (which was one of the reasons why we picked to stay here over all of the other great hostels).
The hot tub was dirty, i refused to go in there- it looked like you would catch something.
Also there is no luggage storage and you get spoken to rudely when asked to use it.
Jobs board.. that would be the day when they would advertise anything.
Avoid, go to one of the other hostels- better location and better atmosphere!
Should have listened to the reviews and stayed away- waste of money!

Paihia is a beautiful place, and approaching the hostel we were pleasantly surprised to find a little hostel with lovely gardens and a hot tub. When we went inside, the owner behind the desk was very friendly and he helped us check in.
Once inside the room I discovered that the floor was filthy (hidden by the fact that it was a dark-coloured carpet) and the showers and toilets left damp and grimy.
The hostel also has a quiet after 10pm rule which the hostel owner reminded us at the top of his voice at 10.10pm. However, at 2am when I was awoken by a group of rowdy boys there was no intervention.
The next day I decided to sample some of the luxuries the hostel offered - the hot tub was dirty with unidentifiable items floating in it and the kayaks were worse for wear.
On my last day I asked the owner a question (which admittedly had a very simple answer) and he made me feel needlessly embarrassed and belittled.

Please please please do not stay in this hostel unless you are very desperate for accommodation.

This backpackers is certainly not what it used to be when I stayed here when it was under different ownership several years ago.

The kitchen is woefully under equipped with barely any knives or glasses and, save for in the morning straight after the kitchen is cleaned, there is a permanent stack of dirty dishes and saucepans, most of which seem to relate to the people who stay and work here . This makes the lack of basic kitchen equipment even more of a problem. Several times we had to wash up other people's dirty dishes before we ate so that we could cook - this has not been an issue in any of the other backpackers' we have stayed in. The few tea towels provided were often filthy and several of the hobs didn't work. Outside on the picnic benches there were often dirty glasses, beer cans and other rubbish strewn about each day until the morning clean and you had to move it all before you could sit and eat.

At night there is permanent noise from people drinking outside. This probably wouldn't be too much of a problem but for the paper thin walls.

On the positive side, Centabay has a great central location in Paihia and Ruth, the manager, is lovely. You can peg your clothes out to dry on a large washing line which is nice and there are kayaks you can take out aswell as a spa pool. Our room was fine and seemed pretty clean. I would have thought however that, for what we paid, there are better places to stay in Paihia.

In short: Centabay is clean and friendly. It's really good for the money (we had a double room with ensuite and kitchenette for $80 a night). Probably not ideal for older people or families. Also, don't expect kayaks as stated on website - they aren't functional. Would be happy to stay again, nonetheless.

Longer form: You can't expect a 5 star hotel for this little money - and if you go in expecting such you will be disappointed. The lodge is showing it's age but everything is clean and functional. Their promotional material is a bit misleading - their signs and website say free kayaks, but they apparently weren't sea worthy - not a big deal, really.

The room we stayed in faced the rear patio area which was often occupied by very loud people (unsure if they were staff or guests). They mostly quietened down around 10:30pm, so wasn't a problem for sleeping. We didn't really mind the noise, anyway and noise is common with most lodges at this price point.

Lastly, Ruth and Robert are both lovely people and were always happy to help. Ultimately a very good stay - but noise and no kayaks loses them a star.
