Owner description: Waitangi Treaty Grounds, New Zealand's most important historic site, is where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed between the British Crown and the indigenous Maori in February 1840. Set on a stunning site overlooking the Bay of Islands, Waitangi is an absolute must-see for all visitors to the North, international and New Zealanders alike. Attractions include the historic Treaty House, a giant flagstaff, a unique fully carved Maori meeting house and the the world's largest single-hulled canoe (waka). Guided tours and cultural performances run at regular intervals throughout the day. Open daily except Christmas.

After crossing the Waitangi Bridge you have the trailer boat launching ramp on the left absolutely safe and sheltered and a good view of the adjacent moorings, we arrived just as a launch was coming in from a fishing charter and were invited to inspect their catch, four large Kingfish.
You can follow the road through the Treaty grounds past the golf course and right through to Haruru Falls, another must see in the area.

I had booked the guided tour on an external website offering 90% off. Too good to be true of course and when I went to enter I was asked to pay $25. Nowhere on the external site does it explain there is a ground admission fee. I was offered a generous discount, and told this happens all the time.

As far as the attraction goes, I thought Denise was an excellent representative and the information is presented in a tasteful way.

Kia Ora and thank you for your review of Waitangi. I need to clarify one comment you made however. Our grounds admission prices are clearly stated on our website http://www.waitangi.org.nz/visit-waitangi/ and also on the rate cards available at reception and at all accommodation providers in the Bay of Islands, as well as the tourist information office. I apologise if there was confusion about our admission prices.

This attraction is well worth a visit, even for non New Zealanders. It is very scenic and has been well maintained. Allow a couple of hours to view all exhibits and attend the cultural displays. The only disappointment for us, was that we wanted to buy a souvenir of our visit and all were 'Made in China' so we did not bother.

Kia Ora and thank you for your review of Waitangi. I need to clarify one comment you made however. Our gift shop stocks a wide range of New Zealand made art and craft with less than 5% of our stock being manufactured overseas. Very little of our stock is manufactured in China as you state, and certainly all our Maori carvings and jewellery are 100% NZ made.

The Waitangi Treaty Grounds is a must for every traveller to Paihia. To visit the Treaty House, stand where the Maori chiefs came on shore is so exciting. Lots of photo shoots alongside the boats and on the grounds.
