Owner description: Waitangi Treaty Grounds, New Zealand's most important historic site, is where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed between the British Crown and the indigenous Maori in February 1840. Set on a stunning site overlooking the Bay of Islands, Waitangi is an absolute must-see for all visitors to the North, international and New Zealanders alike. Attractions include the historic Treaty House, a giant flagstaff, a unique fully carved Maori meeting house and the the world's largest single-hulled canoe (waka). Guided tours and cultural performances run at regular intervals throughout the day. Open daily except Christmas.

I would rate this place as a must, if you wish to learn more about Maori culture and the Treaty of Waitangi. It has a great museum and a video reenactment of the treaty signing by some 40 Chiefs is absolutely a treat, with humour in the end.
Guided tours leave every hour and are included in the entry fee and are really worthwhile as the Guides are very knowledgeable and a great sense of humour. Part of the tour is a cultural performance with a formal greeting of your "tribe". Do you want to be Chief for a short time? The opportunity is there.

We didn't have time for the guided tour & cultural experience, so we perused the grounds & museum on our own. It is a beautiful location. We found the museum to be very informative and learned a lot about NZ's past. The cafe is also very nice with good food & decent prices.

This is a must do thing when in paihia since one can learn a lot of the treaty. There is a museum and if you do get a chance go for the maori performance. Amazing

It was such a great experience to learn so much in such beautiful surroundings. Museum is laid out really well, good mix of reading/interactive. I found the cultural show super fun and interesting (not cringy like some I have seen). The performers really looked like they enjoyed teaching us about their culture. Really recommend a visit and you could easily spend about 4 hours here, more if you stop for lunch. If you have more than a years visa take evidence with you as you get entry for $20 rather than $40
