After spending most of the year arranging our honeymoon, I hit Upon Chris & Donnas establishment, couldn't resist & cancelled the previous booking I had! Didn't regret it for a mo'! A Friendly face greeted & after picking our jaws up off the floor from seeing the view we settled in & relaxed.
We relaxed even when we were swimming with Dolphins. Relaxed whilst bouncing off trucks ceilings on 90 mile beach. Relaxed whilst stretching our necks up at Kauri trees & certainly when relaxing on the deck taking in the view & a beer after being in the spa. The greatest introduction to New Zealands north than anyone could hope for.

Richard & Clare Mitchell, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne.

We stayed at Crisdon Castle for one night at the end of our honeymoon in NZ. My only regret is that we didn't plan to stay here for several more days. We stayed at several highly rated B&Bs and small hotels in NZ (including Langdon House in Christchurch, Peace & Plenty in Auckland, and Browns Boutique Hotel in Queenstown), and Crisdon Castle was probably the best (although Langdon House was a very close second).

Three things make Crisdon really stand out. First, the location and the views are just phenomenal. The pictures can't do the view justice. Second, the hosts are equally great. We did not have dinner plans on the evening we arrived and were invited to have dinner at the house, which ended up making for an excellent last evening in NZ. I highly recommend taking dinner in if it's an option when you stay. Breakfast also was great. Third, the suite we stayed in was among the best we had in any B&B and included a king bed, a nice sized patio, and Roman tub/shower, among other features.

Bottom line is that you really ought to make the Bay of Islands part of your visit to NZ, and Crisdon Castle is definitely the place to stay while you're there.

The previous reviews say it all. My husband and I were lucky to be able to stay here for 4 nights in the suite. Wonderful, beautiful accommodations. The hosts were great to us and we all weathered the 100 year rain together. Donna fed us a delicious lamb dinner as all electricity had gone out in the area and the flooding and slides kept us B&B bound for 36 hours. Chris is always updating the facilites but has promised not to join the outrageously priced that can be found in this popular area. Before making final reservations elsewhere compare the prices with the Crisdon. You get what you pay for.

High above Bay of Islands this boutique B & B spanish style property gives wonderful views. We had the Royal Suite which gave us a very big room with plenty of storage, a four poster bed, a sunken bath and folding glass doors opening onto our own private decking with sofa, chairs and table. The hotel is run by an enthusiastic young couple who offer a warm welcome. Breakfasts were excellent with a continental breakfast followed by a different cooked dish each day adapted to the choices of the guests. Hostess will sometimes offer to do dinner and this can be useful since the property is some 2 miles outside Pahia although travel into town is quick.
Laundry room on site as well as spa therapy room.
Next time we are in Pahia this will be the only property at which we would wish to stay.

We have just returned from travelling around New Zealand. Having been recommended to stay at Crisdon Castle, even with the rave review given to us by our friends we could not have imagined how perfect the accomodation would be. The views from the property are magnificent, the suites beautifully decorated and maintained. Add to this if you want a superb meal on the deck by the pool, Donna is a wonderful cook . This is a must for the discerning traveller

This is a really lovely place to spend a few days. The hosts Chris and Donna are very friendly and Donna’s cooking is fantastic! Because it is in a fairly elevated position the views are amazing. From the deck you can look out over the treaty ground and beyond, making it the ideal spot for an evening drink. Our room was quite small – but perfectly formed, with a good firm bed. The other rooms were all quite big though, all were well equipped with a few special touches.

You could in theory walk into Paihia from here but it would be a fair walk, takes just five minutes by car. The real bonus of this is that it is nice and quiet away form all the tourists!!

Talk to Donna about trips etc she can usually get a bit of a discount. I recommend the sailing catamaran “On the Edge” for a fun day out sailing in the islands.

On a clear night wait till all the outside lights are off then check out the stars – it is almost going just for that!

All in all a great little place which we would recommend to anyone.

We spend three nights in Crisdon in early January. Actually planned originally to stay only two, but as soon as we walked in, the whole family voted to stay longer.

View is great, the place developed with good taste and - the best of all - Donna & Cris are really great and "natural" hosts. Very tasteful breakfast and we also had very nice common dinner. Fitted also well to family with kids (10 & 7).

No question about it, the best stay for us during our 5 week trip in Australia & NZ; 4-5 star hotels included. We'll be back!

  • Liked — The view and the way details are implemented with good taste & quality
  • Disliked — No real swimming pool at the premises
