“The best place to stay at Paihia!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 August 2008

We had spent our honeymoon travelling across New Zealand, and I have to say that Crisdon Castle was the best of the places we'd stayed at. Breathtaking views, wonderful cooking, beautifully appointed rooms and above all, Chris and Donna's exceptional hospitality ensured that we had a lovely time here.

I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a B&B in Paihia.

My friends and I stayed at this wonderful B&B based on the recommendation of another friend. Our hosts Chris and Donna, claimed they'd never been to a B&B before opening their own. Their whole idea was to provide their guests with the same level of hospitality they'd want for themselves. The result is an amazing B&B with an awesome view of the Bay. Like most Kiwis, our hosts were very friendly, accommodating, and generous. But what sets them apart from other B&Bs is the fact that Donna is an amazing gourmet cook. Her Eggs Benedict is hands down the best I've ever had. The only place that came close is a small restaurant in New York's Parker Meridian called Norma's. And for dinner we had lamb chops, which were also absolutely superb. They were so good, in fact, that I asked for seconds. Alas, there were none left. The next morning, however, I was treated to an incredible surprise. Along with my second order of eggs benedict, Chris gave me a side plate of two small leftover lamb chops. I was speechless. I think that little story exemplifies just how far Chris and Donna will go to please their guests. It was a great way to end our trip in the North Island. I can't recommend this place enough.

Stayed at Crisdon Castle for three nights but wished we could have stayed longer as would have loved to experience a dinner cooked by Donna as our itinerary didin't allow for it on this occasion. Agree with previous reviews about the eggs benedict for breakfast.........would have had them three morning in a row if it wasn't for the fact that Donna found me some asparagus (long story) on the second morning and utilised it in a scrummy omelette!
There isn't much to say about Crisdon apart from you will love it!!
We were in the Kings retreat during our stay which was comfortable, clean and exceeded all our needs.
Donna, Chris, Jack and Khan all made us feel really welcome and nothing was too much trouble. Thank you all.
A true Gem of a B & B and good value for money.
Can't wait to find an excuse to visit again!!

April 13-16 King's Retreat room:

Thank you to all the previous reviews! We made sure we put Crisdon Castle on our honeymoon itinerary. The views from the King's Retreat room were absolutely spectacular even when we had pouring rain for 2 days. On one patio you have a view of the bay below, the ocean beyond the bay, and then islands in the distance. Looking out the other patio you have a view of rolling countryside and a view of Harura Falls. The room has double glass doors that you can prop open to enjoy the fresh air and view right from your bed. The room was nicely decorated with top of the line bedding and towels. Our room had a jacuzzi tub for two complete with instant hot water (so you don't run out), mood lighting, radio in the tub. We loved the shower, lots of water pressure and beautiful enclosure complete with heated towel rack. Donna has a background in interior decoration/design and loves to cook.
Chris and Donna were wonderful hosts. We had spectacular breakfasts everyday...some of the best we have ever had. They continue to invest back in the property by making additional improvements to rooms and common areas. Chris gave us a tour of other empty rooms explaining all the new improvements planned for over the winter.
Common areas have an infinity pool, nice deck with view of bay, and outdoor fireplace.

My new wife kept saying "wow" when we got up to our room. If we ever make it back to New Zealand we will definately stay at Crisdon Castle.

What a fantastic package! – My now wife and I arrived in the Bay of Islands to arrange our Wedding and as soon as the door opened we knew it was the place to stay. We were greeted by Chris and Donna and immediately felt like we had known them for years! Once I managed to pick my jaw up off of the ground after seeing the amazing view from the deck, we were given a tour of the rooms, which were stunning, it was definitely the place for our reception.

Donna and Chris were even happy to hold the Wedding there in case of bad weather. We used the BBQ on the deck and took in the amazing views until the sun set. Donna did a great job on the decorations and Wedding meal, racks of lamb and fresh snapper (caught by Chris’s fair hands!).

We had a fantastic time with no problems whatsoever and our hosts just could not do enough to assist us with that personal touch that made the experience so good!

Chris and Donna thank you for all your help and kindness in making the best day of our lives!

We would thoroughly recommend this B&B. It's only a little out of Paihia and the views are still spectacular. Hosts are very friendly, without being intrusive, and Donna's cooking is excellent.

We stayed in the one room that hasn't been done up fully yet but got to view the other rooms before we left and they are beautiful.

The setting is perfect for your holiday in the Bay of Islands.
We'll definitely go back!

We have just returned from our first holiday in the Bay of Islands in New Zealand. We booked our accommodation late after reviewing suggestions on Tripadvisor however we were only able to stay at Crisdon Castle B&B for 2 of our 5 nights as they were fully booked. We soon found out how spoilt we had been at Crisdon Castle when we relocated to our next B&B!
Donna and Chris are fantastic hosts and everything about Crisdon Castle is relaxed and designed to make sure that you have a luxurious but relaxed stay. They have thought of everything from Bathrobes in the cupboard to good quality tea and coffee in the rooms. There is even a small mini bar selection for the weary traveller who needs a late night drink and snack. The outlook from Crisdon Castle is gorgeous and a photographers dream if you are lucky enough to have a great sunrise.
The breakfast is also 5 star and highly recommend the eggs benedict....Donna is certainly a fantastic cook and although we didn't have dinner there due to time constraints other guests partook and the food looked fantastic.
The rooms are very comfortable with a great shower and spa bath. Although we had the Knights nook which looked slightly smaller than some of the other rooms it was more than adequate for us. Crisdon Castle is certainly one of the better B&B's that we have stayed at in our travels around the world and almost borders on being a luxurious motel/lodge.
It is also very convenient to Paihia which was 3 mins by car and other towns in the Bay of Islands. Haruru Falls are visable from the B&B and just a short drive around the corner.
There is also a fantastic corner store 1 min down the road that makes excellent fish and chips and if you are lucky enough to go there when they have some local Snapper then make sure you order that.
They were also more than happy to assist us in booking some of our activities for the weeken.
Highly recommend this B&B as we don't think you will be disappointed. Thanks Donna and Chris for making our stay in the Bay of Islands a memorable one.
