“Superb”
Reviewed 4 March 2010

We had the premium two bedroom suite on the second floor and it was superb in every repect.
I would be less confident about the one bedroom units on the ground floor as these are adjacent to the pool and might lack privacy.

We greatly enjoyed our 3 night stay in April 2009 at the Waterfront Suites. The apartments are modern and very well fitted out, although the entry to our apartment was at ground level, with one flight of stairs from the entry up to the kitchen/living area and another flight to the bedrooms one level further up.

The complex is cleverly designed so that most if not all apartments have a view of the sea along the inner courtyard. The view from the front apartments would be even better. However, I’m not sure that the view would be quite as good from the 1 bedroom apartments on the ground floor, which open directly onto the central courtyard. The advantage of having a 2 bedroom apartment with 2 levels is that both the living area and the main bedroom each have a view. Both these areas have a balcony, as also did the 2nd bedroom in our apartment (although the view from this wasn’t as good!).

There’s a narrow pool in the courtyard (we didn’t use this), and underground security car-parking. The complex is centrally located, and the jetty, shops and restaurants are close by.

Stayed here for 3 nights Fri-Mon in Feb 09 in a 2 bedroom apartment with 4 adults and a 1 yr old. Booked on Wotif. Cost $280 a night plus $15 p.n for cot.

Apartment had 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, washing machine in one bathroom was handy but it didnt work (didnt rinse). Fully decked out kitchen. TV and DVD player. Was on 2nd floor and had balcony over looking pool and then out to sea.

Main bedroom had a small 2nd TV and large walk in robe, Comfy bed. Apartment Clean. Check in simple.

Located right in main spot so walk to everything. Car parking was provided free of charge too and secure.

Did a dolphin swim with eco discovery? - but didnt get to swim with them, got free ride next day to try again and still no luck. Husband went fishing and caught lots of fish which we cooked up in apartment.

Lap pool in middle ok - bit cold and not very good for small kids or playing, only suitable more for swimming laps!

2 BBQ's on grounds to use by people staying there handy.

My wife and I stayed with friends in a 2 bedroom apartment for 5 nights early in January 2009. This was our last stop in a 2 week tour of New Zealand and was our "splurge" of the trip.

Our apartment was absolutely wonderful, despite not being waterfront. The modern apartment was very well appointed with first class fittings. The living/dining/kitchen area was open plan and very well laid out. The ensuite bathroom to the main bedroom was small but the main bathroom/laundrette was quite large. We had a view along the inner courtyard (where the lap pool is located) to the sea, although the view is obviously much better from the front apartments. There was a small balcony off the living area with a table and chairs for 4 which took advantage of the sea view and was a very pleasant spot for an evening drink or three. There were several other small balconies off the bedrooms which also had sea views.

The suites are very well located in Paihia, making it a short stroll to the waterfront, ferry and nearby shops and restaurants. The car park is under the building, which is very convenient, and stops your car "cooking" in the summer sun, which is a real bonus!

Staff were always very pleasant and helpful with tourism enquiries, and we were allowed to check out late as well without problem. Our apartment was made up daily, which was not expected, but very much appreciated.

While the price may not be for everyone, it is somewhere I will definitely return to in the future, as the Bay of Islands has so much to offer, and I still haven't caught a marlin.....

My only (nit picking) negative is having to get suitcases up and down our apartment stairs, as the entry was at ground level, living on the first floor, and bedrooms/bathrooms on the second floor. You only do that once though.

Staying at the waterfront suites was a bit of a splurge for us - with NZ weather you can be sure of at least 1 not-so-great weather day, so I wanted somewhere where we could hang out too. We stayed in one of the premium suites. We had booked this for 3 nights but they upgraded us so we could stay in it for the full 6 nights - it was great not to have to move rooms.
The Suites are in a good position, close to shops, cafes, and the information sites. Its a very short walk to the wharf for the ferry to Russell and to chartered trips, and a short walk to the sandy beach in the next bay across. A bit longer but still an easy walk to Waitangi.
They come with everything you could need in the kitchen (although weirdly, no scissors), and with really good fresh produce available sold on the roadside around northland, we cooked there and on the bbqs provided almost every night. Only shame about Paihia is that its not possible to buy good fresh fish from the shops or locals there - the information site lady suggested we go to Kerikeri where their New World had a good selection (which it did, at good prices too).
We were in a suite that faced the road, meaning we we had good access to the pool and bbq, and an uninterrupted view of the harbour. Most of the other suites look in on each other and the pool area. Luckily the pool closes at 8pm and no-one seemed to break this rule. For us there was quite a lot of noise from the road (a few boy racers kept going back and forth), and people gawking at the hotel and at us from the road, so probably not the best for those wanting privacy. Still, if you don't mind closing the sliding doors against the beatiful weather, they are tinted, and there are light as well as heavy curtains.
I guess because of the price range, there were mostly families and older couples staying here.
The houskeeping team were great, even doing our dishes. The staff were mostly Kiwi and were relaxed but still professional.
My only suggestion for improvement would be for reception to hold some dvds for the players, and maybe some fishing rods or something for guest use.

After my travel agent recommended these apartments, and reading favourable reports on Trip Advisor, we were not disappointed. This was further enhanced when, after 10 minutes of settling into our apartment the Manager rang to say they had mistakenly placed a fruit basket in our apartment, when it was intended for someone else. We hadn’t even noticed it and were completely unphased by this tiny little mistake … however they insisted on apologising with a complementary bottle of wine. I thought it would be some cheap sweet bottle and shrugged my shoulders with indifference, but was very pleasantly surprised when presented with a bottle of St Clairs 2006 Chards! Thank you very much! I was also pleasantly surprised when our apartment was serviced daily – my experience is this usually only happens in hotel rooms. The apartment had everything we needed including fantastic views of the Bay directly across the road, 1 minute’s walk to the shops and wharf and abundant supply of restaurants and tourist information. If there is anything lacking in the apartment (ie salt & pepper, as was our case) just mention this to Reception as its usually something which should be there.

Also, our ground floor apartment seemed to be very well fitted out for wheelchair access, including the modern bathroom.

I cannot highly recommend these apartments enough - brilliant!

Gorgeous apartments. We stayed in a 2 bedroom, bottom floor, waterfront apartment. At a rate of $175.00 NZ amazing deal. We would of happily paid more. Great location on the waterfront right in the hub of the town centre and great eating places. Apartments were wonderfully decorated with all mod cons. Kitchen was equipped and big enough to cook a feast. Spotlessly clean with new linen. We couldn't have wanted more. Beautiful uninterrupted views of the water and nearby islands. Sunset and sunrise were gorgeous. We wish we could of stayed longer. For boat trips you only need to cross the road and your on the jetty. Highly recommended to all!
