“Tired rooms but friendly, clean and central”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 January 2010

The rooms (ours was an upper, seaview one-bedroom) definitely need updating (tired furniture, kitchen fittings, etc) , especially for the High Season prices. However, everything was clean, bed excellent, wi-fi access free and very fast and they could not be faulted on service .....helpful advice from the ever-present owners, swift responses to my emails prior to arrival, a blown lightbulb replaced immediately. Location is great for walking to the township, wharf, etc......I would maybe go for a motel around the Bluff at Ti Beach another time as the beach opposite is much nicer for swimming....but that's being picky...it's only a 5 minute walk to get there!

My husband and I stayed here just for one night in August, we didnt have a booking and were able to get a room overlooking the ocean. The place was neat, tidy, fully equipt kitchen, 2 tvs, queen sized bed and enough space to sit back and relax at night, it was cozy and had everything that we needed. It also included free wifi internet which was a bonus. The weather was shocking and didnt stop raining for the full 24 hours we were there.. but it was still a beautiful place, lovely hotel, well priced ($99 NZ per night) with friendly staff. The view would have been amazing if it had stopped raining long enough to see it!

I chose Abel Tasman for my stay in Paihia and was not dissappointed. I would not give cleanliness 5 stars but the place is spacious and acceptable. The kitchenette had everythiing you need. The view from the room was fantastic. Very conveniently located within walking distance to the wharf where you book all the water activities. (Less than 5 min walk to the wharf) Do not look for nightlife in Paihia. It's a quiet little town. I did not have much contact with the owner/manager except for him asking where I came from. Overall, I was happy with my choice.

Chilling out in Paihia (and a delightful place it is) we'd already booked another, perfectly acceptable, motel for a couple of nights but they couldn't accommodate us for subsequent nights. We were delighted to move to the Abel Tasman having strolled into town and checked out a few places.

The good news - the view over the bay from our unit is superb. The 1 bedroom suite has everything we need (including free wifi and several Sky channels) and is quite spacious enough for the two of us, The owners are thoroughly pleasant and helpful. The suite was immaculately clean. The spa (free) is a bonus. The shower water is hot. We like the attempts to be environmentally friendly - we're already used to waiting for low energy bulbs to warm up.

The less good - the fittings of the unit are beginning to show their age: everything still works, but I suspect that updating should be on the agenda.

Overall a very pleasant place to be, in a superb location, and at a reasonable price,

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay here ,

Great value for money , Best views on the strip In my opinion.
Serviced apartment had everything you needed , and nothing you didn't.

Location was perfect , Close walk to harbour and town.

After reading all the reviews on this place with some good and some not so and numerous E-Mail exchanges with " the friendly Scotsman - Mark " we decided to book-in for 5 nights. We, being my wife, teenage daughter 15, son 17 and of course myself. Verdict by all of us was a thumbs up. It's no Hyatt or Sheraton but hey for the Bay of Islands it was value for money

Fantastic views from our 1BR family room ( top floor Rm 25 - I'll attach a pic if I can work out how) adequately furnished with basic kitchen appliances and utensils. Like the other reports the place was impeccably cleaned on a daily basis by a great group of gals. Best of all the location - a short stroll to everything

No problems encountered, sure the shower was a lil tricky to operate at first however it was hot and plentiful. Lights a little on the dim side due to the long life energy efficient globes but not and issue to us. After dark the place was quiet apart from the competitive rivalry from our unit. Did I say it was spotless? Wireless internet worked every time with our laptops with great speed.

I'm sure that you can and will find better accommodation however it will cost $$$ more. My advice - save the $$$ for the jet skis, gays - fishing trip / gals - day spa, Mack Attack / Excitor and quad biking

  • Liked — Cleanliness of room, view and location
  • Disliked — not much but if I had to choose - basic funishings and kitchen utensils

Awesome views from our ground unit, close to the township and all the cafes, restaurants and wharf for boating excursions are in walking distance. Owner friendy and helpful. Units very clean and tidy. Only problems were that there was no internet connection as advertised, the shower only ran hot.. not cool.
Units do need a bit of a do up, bit outdated.
