“Deluxe ocean view suites or car park view motel rooms”
Reviewed 22 March 2012

After a mistake made by our travel agent we booked a deluxe suite as she told us it would have sea views. After travelling for 8 hours and arriving late in the evening we were horrified to discover that we had paid high rates for what was essentially a motel room with a fabulous view of cars that could drive right up and park at the front. The other windows look out onto a fence. We rang the "onsite managers" to talk to them about the mistake and were told it was too late and we should come in the morning. So we did. The manager was very unfriendly when we explained what had happened and that there had been an error. She gave the impression that she 1. Did not care and 2. Did not believe us and thought we were looking for a free upgrade. Fortunately our travel agent agreed that it was an error on their part and they would pay for an upgrade to the ocean view room for our final 3 nights. These rooms were beautiful and well worth the money. If you can't stay in these rooms then only stay here if you want a motel room with a car park view. Why on earth anyone would travel all the way to beautiful paihia only to look out at their car I really don't know. Apart from this the rooms were nice, well appointed and clean. The spa is a bit of a joke as it is tucked in an ugly corner near the laundry and is very unpleasant to use.

Room Tip: Only stay in the ocean view rooms

We arrived at the Sea Spray after a lovely drive from Auckland. We were not disappointed with the spaciousness and quality of the apartments. We even were allowed to change the originally allocated apartment with the help of a very friendly receptionist.
Supermarket around the corner and the Treaty Grounds at the "end of the road". Beach across the road. It was about a 10 minute walk to the centre but it was along the coast and a well made and lit road so not really a chore.
Staff helped with suggestions for places to visit and things to do/see (they also booked tours with no charge).

Room Tip: Most dont have sea views so we plumped for one at the back with a view of the hillside and a large b...

Finding reasonably priced accomodation in the first week of the year left us few choices, but the Sea Spray Suites ticked most of our boxes. We specified Sea Views and got a 2 bedroom apartment. The apartment was very well appointed, good kitchen and bathroom, good sized living area and balcony, and a comfortable sleep for two couples.

Town centre was just a 15 minutes walk away, the beach just across the road.

This was actually our last resort accomodation since most of the hotels in the area were fully booked because of the golf tournament. Although its a bit isolated, 10-15 minute walk to the town centre, we really didn't mind because there was a dairy beside it and there was a Chinese take-away shop sitting just by the corner. I was really impressed by the amenities as they all looked brand new & top of the line. The interior is very posh. For a 2 bedroom with a pull-out sofa bed in the living area, this was a steal at $150.00/night. When my brother came for a visit late last year, I was trying to book again but sadly the rate shot to $350/night. Maybe we just got lucky the first time

Room Tip: The room given to us was at the back, 2nd floor next at the reception so it was really quiet. We wer...

Don't be fooled by the pictures, very few of these units have water views, in fact only the ones at the front of the complex that do (maybe 6), the majority look out into a car park or fence. Although all the photos show the place with water views, so it was disappointing to see that only a small few get a water view. The location is great and the place is very modern and tidy. We stayed in a one bedroom. The living area was very big (although the TV is a long way away and a little small for the size of room), very modern and the kitchen has everything you would expect to be self contained. Bathroom is a good size and the bedroom is nice, with a courtyard with tables and chairs, although there isn't much of an outlook. If your looking for a motel styled accommodation that is modern and tidy, then this a good option. I would have to say however there were some things that I don't think were up to standard. Small things like clipped plates, rubbish still in the bin from the previous person, DVD not working and a over eager cleaner, who on the day we left entered the room as we were loading the car, even though we were still within our time. Although the complex appears to be run by a hotel chain, it would appear that the manager lives on site. There is a spa with the complex but the hours are quite limited for a tourist. I had great expectations of this complex having seen the photos but I have to say I wouldn't probably stay here again.

Room Tip: Very modern decor.

This establishment, whilst being relatively new, somehow misses the mark for reasons that probably in isolation are not that serious but in conjunction with everything add up to a bit of a disappointment.

The good things about this property are:

Location:

Across the road is a wonderful safe swimming beach.

It is one bay around from the main town centre so it is quiet.

It is relatively new so still has the "fresh" look.

The negatives were:

Like other reviewers note unless you have a very front room all other rooms have virtually no views at all other than into adjoining properties.

Our room was downstairs and had a small courtyard. Sitting out there was pleasant but this also is the area that other guests step outside to smoke. Whereas I appreciate that this is somewhat outside the control of the motel, the very design of the courtyards (open trellises etc) means the smell travels to virtually everyone.

There is nowhere to sit to eat. The unit had a small kitchen, but if it is raining (as it was for some of our stay) you cannot sit outside to eat and there is nowhere else.

Our room needed some repairs in the rooms. Not big stuff, but paying attention to details can make the difference between a happy guest and an unhappy one.

Car parking, whilst free is a little haphazard. The property is build at right angles to the road and is very narrow. Parking involves angle parking in front of your room which frankly, for a larger type car is quite worrying as the driveway that other cars pass by with means there is little room to get through. Whilst we were there a car hit another guest’s car.

Overall, not sure I would return there. There are a lot better properties in this area.

Room Tip: Book a front facing suite
