Description: Provenir is a modern local restaurant with a seasonally driven menu. The centre of the restaurant is the kitchen where ingredient quality is non-negotiable. Provenir emphasises the age old formula of simple ingredients cooked well, freshness with a sense of energy, a little bit theatrical, true to life with quality and a story. Hand made, artisanal, from farm to chef. We know our farmers, fisherman, wine makers & growers; from Rod McDonald with his Quarter Acre stunning Syrah, to Bill French who raises our Perendale Lamb, they are just a few of our team. “Best food we had in Paihia!”
Reviewed 2 May 2013

Staying at Seaspray suites very nearby and sadly only discovered this restaurant on our last night - assumed it is aimed more at the resort it is part of...We poked our nose in on the way to walking into Paihia and were so glad we did. Quite intimate but comfortable armchairs made the wait very bearable along with very tasteful and not too loud music in the background.

Though we did have a couple of blips in our ordering as they had run out of both the wine by the glass and the beer we wanted - the wine we then chose was delicious. Even when our order got "mislaid" we didnt mind too much as when the sharing plate of scallops was delicious and the fish cooked in banana leaves was scrumptious - after we had to send it back to cook the fish further as he had tried to make it up to us with bigger servings!... But we didnt mind as the food was so good and they gave me a complimentary glass of wine to help while away the wait!

They were having a bad night but they did everything they could to make up for it and we didnt make a fuss and just sat and enjoyed the holiday feeling!

“Lovely Evening with delicious food”
Reviewed 29 April 2013

Spent a lovely evening for a friends birthday at Pure Taste in Paihia. The Tasting plates we shared, presented on beautiful glass platters, were delicious. They even made a birthday cake for our friend- that was a great suprise. The service was great and friendly. All in all a memorable evening at a very reasonable price.

“Three out of Four”
Reviewed 19 April 2013

The service is great, the setting and decor is fantastic, the wine by the glass from the barrel is delicious BUT the food was a total let down!!!
Continuing the search for seafood in Paihia this restaurant looked like the place to find the best. Pure Tastes is perfectly located along the esplanade and the greeting that customers receive is sincere and professional. It was surprising to find there was only one white wine served by the glass but I wish I wasn't driving so I could have had a 2nd because it was great.

BUT the as for the food.... both the entre' and main were a disappointment. I ordered grilled New Zealand sea scallops and was disappointed when my sea scallops arrived emersed in a thick cheesy mornay sauce. Fish and cheese just isn't something that should be mixed and when you are expecting grilled sea scallops so you can enjoy the experience of the flavours of the seafood - a cheesy thick mornay is not even 2nd best. Presentation of the dish was great as it was served with a small watercress salad and this was delicious however the same could not be said for the small mound of steamed rice which was "rock hard" and impossible to eat.

For the main I had originally planned to have the steamed mussels as they are reknown in New Zealand but the waiter made the "speacial of the day" (which was seafood chowder) sound fantastic. Hence, I changed my mind and ordered the chowder. What a disappointment and mistake.
Firstly, the temperature of the soup was SO hot that the flavour of the soup was extremely minimal to non-existant BUT the bigger shock was to find that a "chef" in a restaurant of this standand would put "seafood extender" in a seafood chowder!!!!! I was shocked (in case you don't know what "seafood extender" is - it is an artificial "seafood" that is suppose to replicate a mix of fish and crab. It is cheap and not so tasty).
There was an absence of mussels, crab (except for the artifical stuff), sea scallops and the prawns were the tiny seemingly frozen variety, However, the fish that was in the soup was delicious. The "chef" should have simply made a fish soup and omitted the fake "seafood".
Overall, a very disappointing meal at a restaurant that looks like it has such promise. Thank goodness for the good service, nice setting and lovely glass of wine.

“Hit and Miss”
Reviewed 16 February 2013

We ate here twice. On the first night, we both enjoyed the food and the ambience. The service was excellent and whilst the menu was not extensive, it was interesting.

As we had enjoyed the meal so much we decided to go back again the following night to celebrate my husband's birthday. The staff on duty were completely different (including the chef we suspect) and not everything on the menu was available (bit of a problem when you have a limited menu anyway). The service was quite poor on this occasion and the waiter in charge didn't seem to know what he was doing (the previous evening everything had worked very smoothly). We were both a little disappointed with our meal. My husband had belly of pork which was extremely fatty (even accounting for the fact that it is a fatty cut anyway) and my lamb was also disappointing.

The kitchen is only just behind the tables in the restaurant and after a while we could hear shouting and a row breaking out between the chef and the waiter! Although we actually found it quite amusing to hear the commotion (and it made a memorable night!) it wasn't quite the behaviour we would expect to encounter.

My overall view is that the place is very inconsistent and it is pot luck as to whether you catch it on a good day or a bad day!
