We saw the brochures for the Kaituna white water rafting which includes a 7-metre waterfall. I had some reservations before signing up, but several different (non-affiliated!) people assured me it was great fun.
We were all beginners in our raft (apart from the guide :-)) and we had the complete safety demonstration and practice on dry land first before entering the water. The whole trip took two hours but we were in the water for probably around 45 minutes (we didn't actually time it) although the time goes very quickly. We entered the water at the base and were bussed back after coming out of the river at the other end. There were showers (not heated) in the changing rooms at the base.
Safety seemed high on the agenda, but it was done in a subtle way so we still had a lot of fun all the same. Three rafts (5 or 6 of us in each) went down together, and there was a separate instructor in front on a "sledge", and people on the banks along the way. Although we were all novices we negotiated all the rapids successfully, including that 7-m fall. There was an unexpected bonus section, where the guide made sure we were all nice and wet by the end.
The guides of Raftabout were great fun and kept up a banter throughout. Almost everyone appeared to purchase the photo CD afterwards. For the thrilling experience this trip is great value for money. As soon as it was over I wanted to do it all again!
