“Simply the Best!”
Reviewed 22 February 2013

Just returned from 4 weeks in Taiwan & New Zealand. This is the best accommodation we stayed in. The standard of accommodation is superb. It's location is outstanding. An oasis of quiet and calm. Just far enough away from Rotorua to avoid the sulphur smells and yet close enough to make sure you can enjoy the area. Mick and Teresa are the perfect hosts (along with their animals). Breakfasts change each day and are the best we have had in any B & B. They are both so friendly we didn't want to leave. A drink in the Anglers Arms with Micks own Liqueurs was the perfect end to each day.

I can't wait to return to New Zealand and the Mokoia Downs Estate B&B will be the first place on my list to revisit. We had 4 nights this time and it wasn't enough. Would have been nice to built in more time to spend relaxing in the grounds at Mokoia Downs.

Mokoia Downs was such a pleasant place to stay, that we extended our initial stay with one more night. The property is fantastic, a pure wellness oasis in the middle of nature, with lots of entertaining possibilities, including a fully equipped cinema room, where we very much enjoyed a movie the hosts suggested based on our discussions. Everything is thoroughly thought through with the single aim to make the guests not only feel at home, but also help them make the best out of their stay in Rotorua. Mick and Teresa are the perfect hosts, they were so attentive, suggesting things to do that best fit our interests, adjusting the breakfast to our preferences - and I must say that this was the best breakfast we have had in our 3 months trip around Thailand, Australia, NZ and Hawaii. We spent lovely evenings with them enjoying the complementary drinks at The Anglers Arms, the house bar. We found Mick and Teresa very inspirational, since their life story is definitely a fascinating one.
We highly recommend Mokoia Downs and hope to be back again!

We had a very warm welcome from Mick and Theresa when we arrived at their lovely property. There is lots to see with donkeys , sheep, ducks and chickens. There is a swimming pool which we made great use of, a playroom for small children, a well stocked library and a cinema room/dance studio/chill out room and lots of land for walks. Mick brews his own drinks which we enjoyed sampling after our nights out in his bar. The breakfasts were amazing and the best we had in all our travels through New Zealand..

However, the very best thing about this comfortable b&b was the way our hosts made us feel so special. We were sad to leave and would recommend it anyone staying in Rotorua.

This was our first B&B on a months holiday in New Zealand. We stayed two nights. I wrote in the visitors' book something like "you have set a very high standard to match for those who follow". I have to say that we went on to stay at several very very good B&B's but now we are home the comment remains valid. The welcome given by Mick and Theresa is REALLY outstanding. It's not just the welcoming tea and home made cake and biscuits...it is ongoing. You are their house guest and they simply want you to have a great time in Rotorua. They booked us into a Maori evening meal and show; they suggested walks; and they gave us a discount on the local restaurant. You might argue, well that's their job, but to Mick & Therasa it is a vocation.

We had a good big bedroom with a separate bathroom (shower is over the bath) and a useful little lobby area. Our bed was extremely comfortable and we slept really well. Breakfast is one of the best we had in a month, and boy did we have some good breakfasts in New Zealand.

The only possible downside (for some) is that it is about 10Km outside downtown central Rotorua. In our mind this was an advantage because (a) it was beautifully quiet; (b) it was set in a smallholding with small lake and paddock so was a peaceful haven at the end of a day doing the sights; and (c) you didn't get the sulphur smell that we experienced in the central area. There is even a small swimming pool (bracing in the morning).

We really really liked Mokoia Downs and Mick & Theresa.

Very many thanks to Mick and Teresa for their wonderful hospitality when we stayed a couple of nights on 10th & 11th January. I wish we could have stayed longer at their wonderful home. Mokoia Downs Estate is a peaceful retreat and the perfect base for exploring Roturua. Mick and Teresa do all they can to make you feel spoilt. Fabulous breakfasts, very comfortable rooms, lovely surroundings and great hospitality, including Mick's bar, where guests are encouraged to gather and chat at the end of the day. Teresa's cakes are a real treat with a welcoming cup of tea. Even the ducks and chickens seem hellbent on welcoming guests!

We spent 5 days holiday in Rotorua at the end of December 2012. There we stayed at our friends recommendation at Mokoia Downs B&B. I must say that it was just perfect. This place is everything we needed: cozy room with terry flocks included :), homelike atmosphere and great breakfast with fresh organic eggs. We could spent the whole day there. There is a pool available for the outdoor activities and a dancing room where we had a lot of fun in the evenings. Mick and Teresa have an impressive collection of books, movies and music they enjoy sharing with their guests. I almost felt part of their family, which by the way includes two lovely donkeys, two greedy sheep and other two noisy ducks.:)

Second time at Mokoia and it was better then what we remembered. We are definetly going back once the baby is born and is old enough to travel.

What more could you wish for : sunny, quiet, surounded by nature and with a pool. Peacefull evenings and lots of thing to do around is just what a man needs at the end of the working year.

Mick and Theresa are very nice people. They are glad to accomodate just about every single request you have, they make the best breakfast ever and they are more than happy to share a story with their guests in the evening.

The house is beautiful and they even have their own home cinema theatre were you can watch any movie you want.

Thank you so much for your hospitality guys. We are definetly comming back ...soon.
