“Very Awkward”
Reviewed 16 February 2014

We were recommended this B&B from another B&B from Waitomo. But in their defense, they stayed with Dorothy, but she didn't have anything available so we opted for her daughters home on the same property.

We arrived around dinner time and their family was having dinner. It felt like we were interrupting their family and was showed our room by their daughters who clearly were inexperienced with this. After being shown our room and given a map to where the restaurants are (without suggestions) we headed down to restaurant row (they had another name for it, but I can't recall).

When we came home, everyone was in bed so we headed there too. No chit chat, no getting to know our guests. The door to "their" home was closed, so we just assumed we were to head up to our room.

Upon waking I went downstairs to find "the door" still closed. I wasn't sure what this meant. Were we to stay in our area? Were they to bring us our breakfast? After about 20-30 minutes I headed downstairs again to find the door still closed. At this point I just knocked and their eldest daughter was in the kitchen. I inquired if we were to come in and she said "yes". So I sat at the bar because I wasn't instructed as to where to sit. She informed me that I should sit at the table.

At the table was cereal and other carbs. I let her know that we wouldn't be eating any of that food as I had instructed them the day previous. She said she knew and would cook us a hot breakfast. She made us farm fresh eggs and streaky bacon. She did, but it was all very awkward. We felt like we were intruding into their home and did not fell like welcome guests.

On a plus note the view was amazing. Their property (what we saw of it because we were never offered a tour) was beautiful, and I can imagine this would be a lovely place to stay if the daughter(s) weren't left in charge. Thank goodness, the dad came downstairs and gave us some recommendations on where to go next. This saved the day as mom was at her real job. I'm not sure what we would have done if Dad wasn't there to help us.

Other things to consider for the owners of this B& B. Ask your guests if they need to use your laundry facilities, and recommend restaurants. The one we ended up at was sub-par. If you want to stay in the B&B business, make your guests feel welcomed. Please also tell your guests where the space heater is as we got very cold upstairs and could not find the thermostat.

Room Tip: Ask to stay with Dorothy not her daughters home

When I called to find out about Hunt's farm, Maureen said "we would love to have you stay with us" and from that moment on I didn't want to stay anywhere else. Hunt's Farm is in the most stunning location, up on a hill overlooking Rotorua but while away from the sulphur smell of the town, it is still very convenient if you have your own transport. We stayed with our 18 month child and he delighted in playing outside on the farm. Inside Maureen was very kind always finding way of making our lives easier including letting him play with a lovely old box of toys so we could enjoy her delicious breakfasts. While we didn't see much of her husband "farmer John" he was just as warm and made us feel right at home. We also got to meet one of their children Sonya who gave my husband some great advice on mountain biking - which is a fabulous experience in the Redwoods if you get the chance to do it. The Hunt's are a remarkable family and I highly recommend their place for anyone looking for tranquility and the ultimate in hospitality.

We stayed three nights in this spacious, fully equipped and cosy upstairs apartment with great views over the entire town and without the sulphur smells that often occur in town. Rooms together 77m2 including a cork floored en-suite bedroom, and a total of 4 beds.
Full breakfast was served downstairs in the living area with open kitchen, where we also spend part of the evening talking with Sonya and daughter. Good advice on the best activities to do, and she did a whole basket of laundry for us.
One evening we spent on the terrace overlooking the town, sipping our wine. The pool below in the garden was heated, but we already went to one of the spa’s. One morning a rainbow against a grey sky was above the sun-lit meadow with the dear grazing below from the farm. This was a very pleasant and relaxed stay of which we have excellent memories.

Sonya and Dave along with their family, and the unforgettable cat Louie provided the two of us with an outstanding 6 night Easter getaway. The upper guest wing of the beautifully designed 'farm house' has the perfect balance of privacy and welcoming homeliness. We were welcomed into their family living area for a delightful breakfast every morning (big thanks to Sonya for the crispy bacon!) and for a cup of tea or coffee in the afternoons. We had made a few key plans for our trip but the remainder we had left open to see where the winds would take us. The Hunts/Cronshaws where instrumental in making our trip to Rotorua and the surrounding areas so unforgettable with their knowledgeable and invaluable tips!

The location of Hunts farm was perfect to use as a base and to venture out on daily activities, and close enough to the restaurants and pubs of rotorua so that we could head out for meals at night. Highly recommended for all travelers, young and old, single, couples or as a family!

If you enjoy a quiet holiday and warm hospitality, Hunt's Farm is a great choice in rotorua. We stayed with Sonya for 2 nights and would have loved to have stayed longer. Sonya and her daughter (who cooked us breakfast) were friendly and accommodating and made us feel very welcome. We were lucky with the weather and went to bed looking at the stars through the skylight in our room. The farm itself has a fantastic location with great views of Rotorua. My family was staying with Maureen up the hill, and were also treated to some Kiwi hospitality and a tour of their dry farm by her husband, John. Thank you and we hope to come back someday!

The Hunt family has been the nicest host we had on our NZ trip so far. We stayed in the upstaires part of their huge house directly attached to their ground floor living room. This part sleeps five and has got an own bathroom. Lilly (one of the daughters) prepared every day a nice breakfast (continental with much homemade food and also cooked versions) for us and we had from the dinning table a 180 degrees view over Rotorua. There is a huge garden where you can relax lying on the lawn under the trees, again viewing the lake and the city. You can also use the big swimming pool. The family was also booking us in into several tours and had helpful hints of what to see, do and which restaurants to try (as it is located on the slopes of the hill it takes you a ten minutes drive to the city centre). We prolonged for two days and wished to stay even longer. They made us feel home at their place and we felt as being part of the family - thanks for that! Hope to see you sometimes again.

The Hunt farm is a great place is stay if you're looking for a peaceful, quiet retreat away from the zoo that is Rotorua.

I had the pleasure of staying at the Hunt Farm with John and Maureen for one night in Jan 2012. Their property is a large, sloping working deer farm sitting a few kms behind the town, with a wonderful, expansive view all the way out to the lake. John and Maureen were wonderful hosts, and their B&B was custom-built only a couple of years ago to accommodate guests on one wing of the property. My unit was modern, clean, and had a great view of the town and lake.

I arrived at the property late afternoon, and was invited to chat with them and their family over coffee and cookies in the living room as we admired the view over the lake and they shared stories about the history of their farm and family. Later in the evening I got into the truck with John and helped him shoo deer to different paddocks. Sleep was great, and breakfast was hearty and delicious.

I recommend the Hunt Farm to anyone interested in a wonderful B&B experience in a peaceful, rusting setting and yet only a 5-minute drive away from all the hustles and bustles of Rotorua.
