“lots of bad reviews, but we came for a week and its awesome”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 January 2013

After paying for a weeks accomadation I forgot to check trip advisor,if I had of I wouldn't of booked it,so many bad reviews.
But I'm glad I did, luke 10yo and me dad checked in Monday 21st Jan 2013, a couple of little issues but where fixed within 2 hours,we where upgraded to geyser room view, awesome room, yes dated but very clean and the cleaning staff we great even washed our bowls from breakfast.

I've stayed in a lot of hotels in rotorua and this has to be the best value for money,if something is wrong in your room just talk to the manager he bent over backwards for us.I looked at booking again with the agency that booked us in this year but they have sold out for next Xmas break already, what's that telling you.

This hotel was the most disappointing place we stayed at on our trip. The entire hotel was in need of an update (except perhaps the reception, which just stood to unnecessarily lift your expectations). The rooms were so old and dated (needed new paint, and a general reno). They advertised wi-fi, but we were told we couldn't access it because we were too far away. Service was not particularly friendly. The pool looked horrible, and the spa was left cold. The shower has possibly the worst water pressure imaginable.

Yes there is a view of a geyser and a mudpool...

Had a good two days here - a nice big room with good view and outside area. Staff and Manager very helpful and the hotel is well priced. Yes the rooms could be updated with flat screen TVs, subdued lighting and all, but that comes at a price and the room was clean, beds and chairs comfortable and where else in the world can you see geysers and buddling mud pools from your bedroom window for $100 NZ a night?

Myself and group of friends stayed here at the end of last year, on arrival we were greeted by a pretty non responsive man who made us feel like we were ruining his day! I look at the pool..dirty and univiting...there was a sauna somewhere??...locked and not working. Room was really dirty, the beds sagged and had crumbs of some sort on the top. When we booked there were 2 complimentary glasses of wine on arrival ...did not recieve, when we asked the guy about them his response was.....alright!! give us a chance ....never recieved.
THE SAD THING is it is in such a lovely location and with a bit of management and effort it could be a nice clean affordable place to stay ........such a shame for Rotorua and NZ!

We had a lovely 2 nights at this hotel. The manager was friendly and helpful, our room was spacious, the beds comfortable and the view of the geyser and mud pools is spectacular.

Yes, the decor is a bit tired and the bathroom was small, but it was clean and unlike modern hotels where all too often the lighting is gloomy, the lighting was great. I would far rather have windows you can open at night than air conditioning.

I would definitely stay here again as it is good value and we were able to take our dog (only possibly with certain rooms).

I knew this hotel wouldn't be the nicest hotel we stayed at on our New Zealand holiday when booking it. The cheap price reflects the condition of the hotel. It was an old hotel that wasn't very clean, but was sufficient for our needs - a place to have a sleep.

We took full advantage of the free wi-fi option (we booked this hotel through wotif). The access code wasn't given to us at check-in, so I had to go down to the front desk again to get the code. The lady at reception was VERY friendly. We had a nice long chat about what there was to do in the area. She was super helpful.

We had an excellent view of the geyser! It was beautiful to wake up to that view. It was pretty stuffy, with no air-con. With all the windows open, it cooled off at night.

The breakfast was included with our booking. It was just cereals, toast, juice, and fruit soaked in syrup. Fresh fruit was not available, but would have been nice to have for our children.

We booked the room for the view, and got exactly that.

In all my many years of travelling this place has to be close to the worst I've stayed in. Definitely in New Zealand..
We booked two rooms over the internet through WOTIF for 3 x nights with guests from overseas. When arriving we thought we had been booked into a refugee camp. We arrived in early evening to discover the restaurant was closed so no easy dinner. Good start!!

The place is very old ('60's?) and tired. No maintenance whatsoever ( I am an engineer!!)
One power plug over fridge not working at all (to plug in kettle)
Lights hanging off the wall
We had a ground floor room which offered no privacy from passers by looking at the geothermal resort adjacent
The entrance to the room is through the bathroom.
The bathroom fan was very noisy with broken louvres
TV only had 4 local analogue channels which had immense ghosting problems. Not a flat screen plasma or LED. No SKY
No WiFi or internet connection in rooms
Thermally lined curtains had been washed resulting in the lining ripped all over the place and very dirty with black mould everywhere
Peeling wallpaper, numerous stains and patches on walls and ceilings

We were embarrassed for the visitors and New Zealand. It is a disgrace.

We stayed one night and then moved somewhere else. WOTIF were very good and offered a refund on the two nights we had previously paid for

Room Tip: Don't bother!! or if you must, ensure it in the newer block. They look possibly better.

Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback, it is much appreciated.

Just to correct you on the age of the building, the main portion of the Hotel, the Tower block, was built in the 1980's not the 1960's.

The room that you stayed in was on the 1st floor of the Tower Block. The entrance to these room is not actually through the bathroom, there is a vanity in the entrance, but then you go through a door on the right into the shower room and toilet.

We do appreciate that the back of your room has two large windows and glass sliding door, so that from your room you have a clear view of the Pohutu Geyser and mud pools, we appreciate that other guests may walk along the grass lawn in from of the ist floor rooms, to look at the Geyser, and you feel they may have looked into your room, of course the rooms do have drapes that can be pulled for privacy.

The rooms actually have digital TV, and should have 9 channels, so we will look to see why your TV was not working correctly.

The rooms do have in room wi-fi and the code to access this is available at the reception, the lounge is also open for guests to use wi-fi

We thank you for raising some concerns over maintenance and we have requested our Maintenance person to attend to your room.

Once again thank you for your feedback
