“Mixed feelings”
Reviewed 10 June 2007

The good - I liked the size of the room, nice shower and bath, outlook over the mud pools and Pohutu Geyser

The OK - a bit far from town unless you wanted to drive, breakfast OK, but not great, traffic noise, but there was an internal door which cut down noise

The bad - large cockroach that crawled in to my bag and came home with me (a colleague had a cockroach end up inside in clotthes she was wearing), dated and worn in areas, conference room seats absolutely disgusting (dirty and broken) - need to be thrown out

Hotel is in a thermal area so there is a sulphur smell almost al the time (this does not bother me however).

In my view this hotel was truly horrible. It stated refurbished in 2006 - dont believe it, the reception area possibly, the room we had was circa 1960. Really shabby, and dirty. We stayed at 6 different motels/hotels throught the north island and this was outstandingly bad. We asked to be moved and they offered us a better room for one night but had to go back to the original for the remaining 2 nights of our stay as the hotel was fully booked, the 'better' room was marginally better - still dirty. The pool was filthy with black scum around the rim, the only parasol was rusted through. To say the hotel was fully booked we didnt see anyone going anywhere near it!! I cant remember the last time I stayed in a hotel that had BLANKETS on the beds, these were definately circa 1960 - tatty and torn too. Rotorua is absolutely gorgeous and we stayed in the lousiest place. Do not stay here. They are also changing the title to Regal Geyserland (God know's why) its anything but Regal. BE WARNED!!!!!!!!!

We stayed here for 2 nights in October 2006. The hotel was reasonable inexpensive compared to other hotels on offer and compared to those we stayed in. The hotel and the decor were dated, but our room was neat and clean and had Spectacular views of the Geysers and mud pools!

Our room included breakfast and we ordered it to be delivered to our room, where we ate breakfast watching the Geysers erupt and we had no complaints over the food or the service!

We basically only used the hotel as a base to explore the surrounding areas including all the geothermic parks except for the one which we overlooked!

The smell of sulphur is not that bad, you get used to it!

This is the most disgusting hotel I have ever stayed in.

Lets get the good news over with - our two rooms had fantastic views of the Geyser Park.

The location looked attractive in the brochures when we booked through our UK agent, Travelbag, in late 2006. When we arrived outside the hotel our hearts sank. It looked like a communal property on a council housing estate and the reception area was bleak and barren with hastily scrawled notices in the windows saying they were upgrading their computer systems so the internet service wasnt working. There were big signs on the drinks and snacks vending machines saying they were out of order too.

We were attended to quite efficiently and given our keys to our upstairs rooms. On loading our bags into the lift I noticed the safety certificate had expired in November 2006!

On entering our rooms we encountered a sulphurous smell as the windows had been left open. The wallpaper was peeling and bits from the curtains' blackout backing were rotting and had fallen on the floor. There were insects crawling amongst the folds in the curtains. Insect nests and cobwebs were rife in the bathrooms. The wallpaper was infested with squashed insects.

I went down to reception and explained the problems. Instant apologies and the housekeeping department was summoned to put things right. The insects were disposed of but nothing else. I was told all the rooms were similar so not much point in changing. We were told it was the previous guests' fault for opening the windows. There was no air conditioning, no ventilation so what else were guests supposed to do. There were no mosquito nets to repel boarders.

The water in the swimming pook was dank and uninviting.

We had a good evening meal in central town. Needless to say we didnt bother finding out whether the hotel served breakfast. We were glad to check out and leave.

My husband our 7 year old Son and I stayed at this Hotel for 2 nights in January 2007 and we thought it was great value for what it cost. We stayed in a "Poolside Room" which was great. Our room had been newly renovated and was clean. We used the swimming pool, which was clean and a good size for us. We had breakfast both mornings there, and the breakfast was good value, as it was complimentry. Brekafast consisted of baked beans, scrambled eggs, bacon, mushrooms, cereal, yoghurt, muffins and orange and apple juice as well as fruits, coffee and tea. We had an aweseome view of the Geyser from our breakfast table each morning and we could see boiling mud from the outside of the breakfast room.
The staff were friendly . My only complaint was the restaurant and bar were not open as often as would have been good. Room service was only availiable from 6.00pm-9.00pm and the restaurant closed earlier than was advertised on the door. It would have been nice to be able to have a cool drink while being around the pool. The hangi was only on , on a Sunday Night, as well, even though it was advertised as being on "Most Nights". But that was not really a problem as we went to a more authentic one which was called the "Maitai" Hangi and Performance! This Hotel was a good place to stay and we will definatly be back again as it was a great price , the rooms were clean and serviced each day and all in all it was really good value.

We stayed here for three nights and the view was just spectacular. The room itself consisted of a double bed, a single and one small armchair. There were two lights not working and when we contacted reception weretold they would be replaced as soon as possible. Well that didn't happen for the three days we were there. The room was clean, but very old. The walls were scratched and the ensuite light/exaust made a terrible noise.
The staff were pleasant, but could barely speak English, and had little or no local knowledge.
We ate in the restaurant one night and the accomodation included breakfast. The food was ok but there was not a big variety. I would not swim in the pool as it was cracked (and small), so it was fortunate that it was too cold to swim.
Internet was available at a cost.
Would we stay here again? Probably if the price was right. The view from our room was worth it.
