My husband, teenage son and myself stayed at this establishment for 4 nights in April 2011. Having booked through an internet site, we got an amazing deal that included full buffet breakfast. Check in was efficient and we received an upgrade to a superior room. Although I did not see any standard rooms, the out side appearance of the hotel did not do the room justice. The room was near new with enough space for us to be comfortable. The bathroom had a shower over the bath, and the tiles in the shower/bath we showing signs of a little bit of build up. hopefully cleaning staff will get on to this shortly so that the near new bathrooms are not ruined by mould. The pool is not overly large but sufficient. We booked the private spa for 30 minutes one evening. This is free of charge but you need to book it through the reception desk as it is a private spa and one room has access to it at one time. Staff were friendly and welcoming. Their is free wireless internet available in the lobby for 20 minutes per day or computers are available in a business section where the internet can be accessed for $3 per 20 minutes. We ate in the restuarant on three nights, enjoying a la carte and buffet. We enjoyed the buffet on two nights but felt like a change as the buffet was very similar for the two nights we ate there. The menu and prices for the a la carte we good and would recommend it. Overall our stay here was an enjoyable one and we would no hesitate returning to this property.

We had a really nice room on the 3rd floor at the front of the building. Clean, comfortable nice bathroom and couldn't be faulted. The building looks dated on the outside but inside it's been recently refurbished and we couldn't find anything to grumble about at all. Service was good and reception and cleaning staff were really friendly & helpful. We ate in the Restaurant on the first night and tried the buffett. It was outstanding and we went back on the second night. The staff in the Restaurant were really lovely and showed they really care about their customers. The lady in charge of the Restaurant was ultra helpful.
We stayed in 3 Copthorne Group hotels in NZ. I can't understand why this hotel was only classed as 3 star. It was FAR FAR SUPERIOR to the other two Copthornes ~ Auckland Harbour and at Taupo~ Caboose lodge ( which were both classed as 4star) . Well done Kingsgate we enjoyed our stay with you.

This hotel is an average place, nothing very special about it. But the rooms are large, accomodating 2 double beds, so convenient for a whole family to share. The plumbing in the bathrooms is really noisy tho, & you could wake up the family by turning on the tap!

Room furniture must have been 30 years old, stale, and in need of reupholstery.
Front desk was disinterested, no help with luggage.
Restaurant food was mediocre, bar selections terrible.
I was so turned-off by this experience that I would avoid all Kingsgate chain hotels in future.
Location is a 20-30 minute walk from the centre of town.

Stayed here for 2 nights in Jan '11. The exterior of the hotel is terribly old like from the sixties! Booked standard room as the pics on the website looked really nice. On arrival the room was the total opposite of the pics. Roomwas old, dated, only a ceiling fan. Bathroom had not been cleaned properly - at first we thought it was just an ingrained mark on side of loo, however turned out to be dried up blood. A porter was sent to clean it. They offered us complimentary drink after complaining. On-tap beers were flat! We requested to upgrade to a superior room, apparently all sold out as their booking system 'overbooked'! They also advised that after all the drama it would cost $25 if anything was avaialble the next day.
Resaturant service on Sunday night was appalling it took over 2 and half hours for a party of 6 to receive all our food. We received starters, mains and desserts all at different times. They also brought out wrong meals to wrong tables. The restaurant wasn't even at half capacity, service should not have been this slow with only one starter being served and mainly everyone going for the sunday roast meal deal! They were heavily understaffed and the bar area was unable to produce even a strawberry daquiri as they had no strawberries. Eventually we went through just about every cocktail in the book but were unable to make most of it as they have to use ingredients ordered for the restaurant and not for the bar.
After about an hour after ordering the rushed off his feet barmen juggling bar and restaurant turned up with a melon daquiri.
The next day we asked about the upgrade and the Manager found as a new room at no extra cost. Superior room was ok a vast ugrade from standard however wasn't fantastic! The cleaner duty manager came to check if we were satisfied with our room and was told to personally ask for her if we had further problems!
The buffet breakfast selection was terrible since we do not eat pork and werent in the mood for cereals and fruit. Selection included : bacon and sausages (waiter wasnt able to advise what kind of sausage was being served), spaghetti and sauce (like the ones from a tin), beans, hard dried up pancakes, and flavourless potaoes, scrambled eggs looked runny and snotty! just gross. We then decided to go for the muffins/croissants but after all the horrid food they never put out anymore muffins so we just left unsatisfied and not full at all! The buffet that evening was a vast improvement from the 2 previous meals! All in all an awful experience and would not recommend to anyone. Not worth $125 a night ( and this was when it was on special!
