“Elegant and stylish in an old fashioned way”
Reviewed 9 September 2012

What a shame we only had one night to spend in this hotel. Our quaint little but not too small room overlooked the Government Gardens and had everything we needed. The bed was so comfortable I didn't want to get up in the morning. Modern accessories like hairdryer and fridge were hidden in old worldly wardrobes and our chairs were lovely too. We were planning to visit the Polynesian Spa on our visit but when we discovered the Princes had 3 different temperature pools and a sauna we decided to stay put - I felt so clean and relaxed after our session. Unfortunately there was no cabaret on that night but we were served by courteous, efficient staff in the Gate bar before going out for dinner, please try the Prince and Princess cocktails -
We will definitely be back again.

Checked their website images before buying the GrabOne voucher.

We were put up in the top balcony estate room... Which is just their 2nd floor. And the estate room - was a room. (see photos)

Kettle was old and filthy, bed cover wore a wee stain and the decor, room and carpet itself resembled something the queen threw up.

Outdoor spaces were better - lobby couches with the fireplace, tea room, thermal pools and balcony seating are aged but classy and cleaner than the bedroom.

Staff were friendly enough and breakfast was delightful - so that kinda made up for it.

Thank-you for taking the time to review our hotel. We are pleased you had an overall good experience and enjoyed the food and service you received. In regard to the room, while pinks and greys are not everyones cup of tea, our decor and designs are perfectly in keeping with the history and style of the hotel and we do have many other colour schemes available for those who would prefer a different room. We do apologise for the dirty kettle and stain on the bed sheets as this is obviously unacceptable and not in keeping with our expected standards. We have rectified these issues and passed them onto our housekeepers to ensure this does not happen again.

Regards,

Brett Marvelly - Owner

Old world charm & old world service at Rotorua's Princes Gate Hotel. We were not guests at this hotel, but when we turned up on its front doorstep looking for a desperate and very late breakfast we were treated like royalty at this 19th century-style hotel. Lovely atmosphere, lovely staff & lovely breakfast! It's all about service stupid, and many of Rotorua's attractions, hotels/motels, bars/cafes could learn plenty about that from the obliging & kind staff at the Princes Gate.

Room Tip: Although we did not stay here, reception obligingly showed us a couple of their Victorian/Edwardian...

Thank you for taking the time to share your recent dining experience with us. It's always a pleasure to hear great feedback, especially as our staff work very hard to consistently deliver service which is of exceptional standard.

We do hope you will visit us again in the near future, and stay a little longer, as it would be our pleasure to host you as guests of Princes Gate Hotel.

We loved the Princes Gate Hotel! My husband, daughter and I stayed for two nights and would definately recommend a stay there. The location was excellent, right in the centre of town. The old world charm of the Hotel was a welcome change, the staff were extremely friendly, helpful and nothing was too much trouble for them. The restaurant at the hotel served excellent meals, the rooms were clean, and a good size and well appointed. There was also a guest laundry which came in very handy. After a day of sightseeing in cold weather, it was great to come back and relax beside an open fire. Living in the Middle east, we dont get to do this often, but the staff and the atmosphere of the hotel made us feel quite at home. Thank you everyone for making our stay in beautiful Rotorua so memorable.

30 years since we met and 27 since we married. We returned to this favourite spot and it hasn't lost anything. Great room, great show, great food. Professional and friendly and having that something special that most hotels fail to capture - altogether in keeping with the special character of the authentic old building. We have recommended others and will continue to do so. Thanks for a great two days.

Room Tip: Pick a room upstairs in the original hotel with doors to the huge balcony.

We were attracted by the old world charm of this hotel, and were not disapointed. It was comfortable, clean, well appointed - both the apartment itself and the public areas. Its location - easy walking distance of plenty of places of interest - is perfect. And the extra lift came from the accommodating staff who were friendly in a non-coercive way. Seemed genuine and interested (but non-intrusive), and a pleasant contrast with some of the distant, impersonal service we've had in more commercial hotels.
The dinner show on the Sat night was excellent - the show itself, the meal and the service.

my parents would take us to stay at the Princes Gate fifty odd years ago where i had very happy childhood memories, My wife and I stopped by recently and had a most enjoyable stay. The location can't be beaten in Rotorua, right beside the gardens and very close to the lake and shops. The staff were very attentive to us, we stayed in the Marvelly Suite which you should experience even that it is a bit more expensive. Three wonderful thermal pools at our doorstep.

Room Tip: well we had the Marvelly Suite, otherwise a nice what they call designer room opening on to the vera...
