We stayed at family owned Princes Gate Hotel in Rotirua in one of their two bedroom appartments - a step back in time to a more elegant age The hotel dates back to before the first world war and whilst our rooms could have done with a little TLC, this was forgiveable and a lovely place to stay - the afternoon tea is excellent.
We were travelling with my wife's sister who was taken ill was admitted to hospital. The hotel could not have been kinder, holding our room until at short notice we were told she was being transferred to Hamilton hospital for further treatment.
A good place to stay and lovely staff.

We were booked for 3 nights in a 2 bedroom apartment located in a quaint courtyard next to the main building, with easy access to the Hot Pools, Laundry and Dining. Once there, the service was so welcoming, the food so incredible, and the beds so comfortable, that we extended our stay another 2 nights. The level of service was exceptional throughout our stay and the rooms spacious, clean and comfortable. The restaurant food was the highest quality and we enjoyed two of their Caberet Dinner and Show nights while we were there which were greatly entertaining and excellent value. We would definately be looking at the Princes Gate Hotel and Rotorua as our point of entry for a return trip to New Zealand.

We've stayed there twice, right in the heart of Rotorua by Govt Gardens. A boutique hotel, transported piece by piece from Waihi about 100yrs ago. Lovingly restored & reminiscent of a bygone age. Great hosts, the Marvelly's, made us feel very welcome. We booked for the dinner and show and had a wonderful meal and evening.

Room Tip: The rooms by the street open out on to a verandah with tables and chairs and are still very quiet.

Very friendly staff, great location, very close to the centre and spa/lake, lovely place to visit and stay for a short time. Rooms a bit stuffy and there is no aircon but that's not a big issue. Lovely cheese platter and fruit salad at night, that was a good touch! Loved it, will come again.

Stayed in Princes Gates appartments what a shock when we seen inside. The 2 sofas were grubby with stains. The rest of the appartments was clean though it could do with renevating needs painting badly. Our appartments was serviced but they didn't change the sheets or vacuum or mop the floors. Went to the hotel for Hi-Tea scones and cakes were not fresh were made the day before so we were told by a worker. I would not call this hotel or the appartments 5 star more like 3 star.

In November, my husband and I travelled to Rotorua to attend a two-day symposium at the Rotorua Energy Centre.

As we travelled to Rotorua by air, we did not have a vehicle to reach the hotel or the Conference centre. We chose the nearest hotel to Rotorua Energy Centre and Princes Gate Hotel fulfilled all our needs - proximity to the Energy Centre, very pleasant old world ambience, fine breakfast, very comfortable sleep and no trouble in allowing us to deposit bags, in our room, early on the morning of arrival. All staff were very pleasant and helpful.

I recommend this hotel to anyone wishing for a restful and pleasant stopover in Rotorua.

I was looking for a getaway from the city for a rest . Our stay at this gorgeous old hotel was superb and we felt looked after by the staff. The room had elegant decor and the bed was so comfortable, loved the big verandah to sit on and look across to Government Gardens opposite. Experienced the hotel's cabaret and dinner - first class food and entertainment! Location was perfect - walking distance to Lake Rotorua and shops and restaurants. Everything about this boutique hotel is gracious and lovely.

Room Tip: The second floor rooms have a great view. Both levels have big verandahs. Some rooms have lighte...
