“Great old fashioned service”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 March 2014

Great old fashioned service. Rooms well appointed for the price, interesting history, not many of these beautiful old buildings left. Also has some art deco style appartments. Handy to to the shopping centre, theatre and events centre.

Generally exceeded our expectations. Service was consistently excellent. It is an older style hotel, however, we found the room was comfortable and more than adequate for our needs. Floor boards squeak a bit-if you stay in 100+ year old hotels-almost to be expected.Dinner and breakfast was first class.Enjoyed the occasion & will return.

My husband and I stayed in a Designer Room at the Princes Gate Hotel, on the Rotorua leg of our honeymoon.

The Princes Gate is an exquisite yesteryear hotel with beautiful stain glass windows, Victorian furniture and decor in all the dining areas, lobbies and lounge areas. So beautiful, had we known about her, before we booked our wedding venue we would have been happy to have had our wedding here.

The Designer Room we stayed in was the George Harford and it is large with beautiful wing back chairs, chandeliers and a very comfortable bed.

Concierge was excellent - better than all the other hotels we went to on our honeymoon, as he welcomed us warmly, highlighted the facilities available, directed us to our room and was happy to answer any question.

Dinner in the Memories Restaurant was a romantic experience. Staff were friendly and attentive. It is a beautiful room and we definitely recommend dining here, even if you're unable to stay at the hotel.

There were ONLY two negatives during our stay:

- We booked months in advance and requested a balcony room, but unfortunately none were available on check in as the hotel was full. Only minor in the scheme of things, as the website does say they cannot guarantee requests. But as the last night of our honeymoon, it would have been the icing on the cake for us to enjoy breakfast on the balcony, in the morning....We will just have to come back to experience a balcony Designer Room :) Maybe the website could separate balcony Designer Rooms from non-balcony ones? That way guests could book on a first in first served basis.

- The only real negative was the bathroom in the George Harford room. Understandably, the hotel is a grand old lady and that naturally means she has a few wrinkles here and there (which is perfect and exactly what you should expect). Unfortunately, the bathroom will eventually need a mini facelift. In the meantime though simply a good clean, some air freshner and possibly some more ventilation would do the trick, as there was a strong urine smell. At night, I also burnt my foot on a very hot pipe that travels along the bathroom wall in too close proximity to the toilet. Perhaps the pipe can be enclosed somehow....but then I guess it'd come out even closer to the toilet and probably no better with the heat. Hopefully it can be looked into :)

We had high expectations of this unique Boutique Hotel-the style is elegant and conveniently located in a quiet part of this lovely town- we stayed in a second floor room which was small, dark and dingy -compounded by the lack of Air-conditioning, also we were unable to open the Edwardian sash windows so we fried.

The service staff were polite and sociable serving excellent food within the restaurant and swimming pool areas were a credit to the Hotel.

Regrettably, I feel unable to commend this particular Hotel to others

Thank you for your feedback on the Princes Gate Hotel and it fantastic central location and facilities. We pride ourselves on our excellent food and great service as you experienced during your stay.
We are sorry to hear that you were disappointed with your room. We recognise that as a 117 year old Heritage property, there will be some instances where the room’s individuality may not appeal to all that stay with us. If advised of the issues with your room at the time of stay, we would have endeavoured to provide a solution. We do provide fans in the rooms to mitigate any issues with heat however.

If you are looking for an unique and central located accommodation in Rotorua.
This is the place for you, the style is elegant and dining environment and dining service is great.
There are only a couple of hotels and restaurants like this in NZ.
Can see the owner's passion about this hotel.
And owners are very friendly , I would return with my families again if not served by the gentlemen on Thursday night.

I have stayed in this hotel twice, once in the main hotel and once in the apartments. I loved the apartment, u felt like you had your own place but had the perks of a hotel, the outdoor hot pool is lovely and being so close to town is its greatest asset. The main building however, I didn't enjoy so much. The rooms were small and dark and you can't open the windows and u have to fill up the kettle with the bath tap which is not ideal. Definitely recommend the apartments!

Room Tip: Stay in the apartments

Thank you for your comments regarding the Princes Gate Hotel We recognise that as a Heritage property, there will be some instances where the hotel room’s individuality may not appeal to all that stay with us. Having the apartments is a great option for those that like the ability to use the Hotel facilities while maintaining a level of separation as you noted.
We look forward to welcoming you back to the Princes Gate on your next stay.

Good location, walking distance to the bars and restaurants plus close to the gardens. Our room was nice, 2nd floor over looking the street. Great parking (always a plus in NZ). Didnt eat there so can't comment. I would stay there again.
