We had room 18 on the upper floor in the old colonial part of this gorgeous hotel , the rooms are beautiful and decorated in heritage style, warm and comfortable with a beautiful walk around balcony with tables and chairs . Views towards the lake in the distance and the government park. The staff are lovely, warm accommodating welcome and friendly , happy hour drinks a bonus . Breakfast is excellent in a lovely restaurant, great choice , would recommend full English and eggs benedict. Nice town , you do get used to the sulphur smells, easy walk to the other park at the top of the street with 18-20 bubbling springs that can be viewed for free. Some good pubs and bars in town. Thank you Princes Gate for a great stay

Room Tip: Ask for room on top floor in old part of hotel

Lots of character but feeling a bit old. Room has been upgraded with better bed and a new bathroom but floors creaked from people walking above and we could hear noise through the walls. Perhaps that was because of our location which was on the first floor right next to the lobby. We couldn't keep our curtains open due to lack of privacy and heard every tour group as they left in the morning. Buffet breakfast just okay, however, our evening meal was excellent. Happy hour was well attended. Small hot tub out back. Location is terrific next to the public gardens and close to shopping. Smell of sulfur from the hot springs not too bad, unlike some other areas in town.

Good morning Kim. Thank you for staying with us and for your feedback - greatly appreciated. As part of our refurbishment programme, we are laying new carpet in many of our rooms. As we do this we are hoping to improve the sound proofing as well to reduce the problems you experienced with sound from above rooms. Kind regards Phil Agent General Manager

I’ve visited Rotorua a lot with work and family holidays, and on almost every visit I walked past the Prince’s Gate Hotel, admiring the old building and wondering what it’s like to stay in, so when a recent opportunity to visit Rotorua came up I jumped at the chance to stay here.
We really loved the old world charm, and having someone show us to our (upsized) room and explain the hotel facilities on the way was a really nice touch.
We wandered around and explored the building and enjoyed reading about its fascinating history before dropping in to the bar for Happy Hour (although a beer and a small shandy cost us $22 so not a big happy). Then we used the private hot pool which was excellent.
We loved staying here and all the staff were so friendly. The free parking was appreciated and even the creaking floors sounded like history talking to us.
Two issues stopped me from rating this a five. Firstly the room cleaners have let the team down as our room left a lot to be desired. Surfaces needed cleaning properly, as too the floor and cups/glasses. Secondly was the tv. Even after the young lady at reception attempted to help, the only channel we could get was the home improvement one. Even the NZ basics were inaccessible so it was a bit frustrating. Otherwise this hotel is a great experience.

Good morning Rick. Thank you for staying with us and for your feedback - greatly appreciated. I have passed on your comments to my Housekeeping team to remind them to maintain acceptable standards. We are looking at replacing our TV's for bigger, new ones to improve quality and size of picture.
We hope you had the opportunity to enjoy some of the wonderful local attractions

Well I am sorry to say our second experience of High Tea was a great disappointment ☹️ The waiting staff was good but the food was terrible. The sandwiches where terrible thick bread and not a nice combination the ham and cheese stoggy and the other one was just overfilled with greenery not sure what it was meant to be. Scones were over cooked and dry this time. Also there was no freeze dried berries on sweet treats and the filling in sweet casing just bland. It needs to be consistent if I am going to recommend to people. Needs an overhaul. High tea is usually such a treat, felt terrible as I had been raving about how yum it was on our first visit so we bought friend for her birthday she also not impressed but grateful we bought her. All in all very disappointing.

The Hotel really looks like from yesteryear with lace awnings. Well situated close to government gardens and two blocks from the major eateries. We had a small room which had no cupboard. Bathroom had everything required. Mattress was a tad soft. Don’t have a room on ground floor unless you want to be woken by the people above walking on wooden floors.
