A decent chain hotel in a good location, just by the lake and 1 min from the main restaurant area of town. Plenty of parking. The room was fine, nothing special. The carpet in the foyer badly needs changing though...

We stayed at this hotel in January 2009 and booked two rooms at a rate of $201.50/night. Our rate was inclusive of breakfast, but there was also an option without breakfast for $175/night. We had a two night stay, and are a group of four adults and two teenagers.

We arrived in the afternoon and we were checked-in by the duty manager, who was friendly and efficient. The hotel offers free outside car parking, but there are lots of video cameras and staff do patrols of the car park, so rest assured, your car is pretty safe.

Our rooms were large and newly renovated. They had flat screen tv's, fluffy beds, and good-sized bathrooms. We didn't really have a view, but I believe there are rooms which have a view of the lakeside, available for a supplement. The TV only had english-language channels I believe (maybe a Japanese channel?) but there was a good Rotorua tourism channel, which had all the attractions. At the bottom of the screen, it had a map number for each attraction. The map was supposed to be available at the local i-SITE visitor centre for free, but when we went they only offered us a map which cost $1.

The rooms had complimentary safes, but ours was broken so we called and the duty manager came up within 5 minutes to fix it for us. We asked her about Hangi options in Rotorua. The hotel has its own Hangi, called Matariki. She said that it didn't operate on Monday nights, our first night at the hotel, and she said that although it had a bit of everything, it wasn't as immersive as some of the others around town. She said it was a good option if we had gone around all day and came back in the evening and just wanted to see a show and go to sleep. The hotel hangi costs about $60 and includes a buffet. The others around town cost about $100. We went to the Tamaki Maori village Hangi, which was very immersive. It cost $100, but there was a special and we got free entry into one of a selected set of attractions in the city.

We were only bothered once by staff, and that was when they came to our room to change our minibar. Apparently the hotel was changing minibar providers and wanted to restock. It only took five minutes, but it was still annoying.

The hotel doesn't have a wi-fi network in the rooms, only a paid wired option. In the public areas they have a paid wi-fi network, but they also have two Mac computers in the corner where you can log in for free for 20 minutes. You can log in and out as many times as you want, you can sit there for an hour if you want, you just have to log in 3 times.

There is lots to see in Rotorua, with the main attractions being Hells Gate thermal park, Wai-o-Tapu thermal wonderland and the Skyline Skyrides. We did Hells Gate and the Skyline Skyrides, both of which i recommend. If you go on the skyrides, go on a luge ride, it's good fun!

The hotel is completely run on geothermal energy, and so is the pool complex. It is quite a large indoor complex, with three pools. Two of them are heated using geothermal energy, and the third is completely geothermal, with sulphur and everything. This one looks a little dodgy (water looks black) but this is normal, and is supposed to be therapeutic. There are also private geothermal pools which you can book, but we just went in the regular pools. The complex also includes fitness centre, sauna rooms and massage room.

The hotel is located on the lakeside, northern side of Rotorua city. It is close to the city centre, but as we had a vehicle we just drove around. The main town supermarkets and shopping mall are a 5 minute drive.

One night we dined at the Lonestar cafe, which is just up the road from the hotel (ask for directions if you need). The food was really good, and it was very busy with locals, even for a weeknight.

Breakfast at the hotel was a buffet style. It is $24.50NZD per person, and under 16's eat free. I probably wouldn't pay the full price for the breakfast, but seeing as it was included in our rate it was good. There wasn't a live cooking station, or live barista, but they had cereal, fruit, hash brown, tomato, eggs, sausage, bacon etc. as well as bread, pastry and heaps of different juices. Everything was of a high quality.

The hotel restaurant also serves a dinner buffet, as well as a la carte.

A lot of people complain about a sulphur smell in Rotorua, but we couldn't smell it at all, except for when we were at the thermal parks. Other people seemed to be having the same experience.

All in all, we had a great stay at Novotel Rotorua Lakeside and I highly recommend it if you are staying in the city.

I stayed one night for business for the first time at this hotel. The service at reception was very good. The young man that checked us in was informative and pleasant. The room was clean, tidy and reasonably modern. The buffet breakfast was tasty and staff were readily available to help out if needed. This hotel is located close to a lot of eating places with a vast selection of food to choose from.

We had read the reviews on this hotel and others in Rororua. At the end of our stay we just wanted a clean well located hotel. This novotel provided a great solution and was good value for money considering the location.Away from the long strip of hotels on the main road into Rotorua, This hotel overlooks a park and the lake so defineaely opt for a lakeside room and the views were lovely. we enjoyed being close to the lake and Rotorua's new "Eat Street". Only a hop skip and jump away to a pedestrian mall of 15- 20 restaurants we enjoyed a pleasant meal with free live music. The hotel was also close enough to walk to the polynesian spa pools which were outdoor and lovely.
This is a typical modern clean hotel, with views , good location, lounge and comfortable bed at a good value price

We had originally planned to only stay one night and checked out the following morning only to decide that we wanted to stay in Rotorua for one more day!. We went around and checked out about 5 other hotels including Rydges, Sudima, Millenium, Kingsgate, etc and I must say that this is the best hotel in Rotorua by far - it certainly made us appreciate this hotel a lot more knowing wat else was on offer for a lot more money!

We got a room on the 4th floor and altho it was listed as a city view - it was a much nicer view than we expected. The room was clean and spacious and the bed was very comfy. The couch was a good idea as provided and extra space to relax in. There was hardly any noise and the curtains did a great job - even during the day when we decided to come back to the hotel to get out of the heat. The air conditioning was good, altho a bit on the cold side - needs to have better controls for temp regulation.
The bathroom was good- nothing spectacular but certainly up to standard.

Reception staff were friendly and even were kind enough to take a photo of us in the lobby. There is free 20 mins of internet provided as well.

We had the buffet breakfast in the morning and appreciated the friendliness of the restaurant staff. Even though breakfast officially finishes at 10.30 - we stayed in till quite a bit after that enjoying our breakfast. Found the hot food to not be as up to scratch (the tomatoes were sour and overcooked, hash browns too oily and scrambled eggs a bit tasteless) but the fruit juices were lovely and the fresh fruit was definitely the highlight. There is a wide variety of cereals and toast, muffins and pastries as well.

For dinner one night we decided to get fish and chips takeaway and were allowed to eat it in the lovely courtyard outside the restaurant with the staff even offering us cutlery for use.

The best thing about the hotel is its location. Its just across the road from the park and lake and the great line of restaurants and cafes so its great for strolling around and taking in the best of the town from here. Also, they have a spa inhouse which offers massages and manicures and although they were booked out, they managed to call in someonewithin 2 hours to get my massage done - which was heavenly!

I think the downside would be that there was no little freezer compartment in the fridge. It was quite hot on the days we were there and ice would have been good. Also, on the first day the staff forgot to deliver fresh milk even though we had asked for this top be done personally at the restaurant itself.

Apart from the two little things, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay! Its a lovely hotel and its great value for money - will not disappoint!

Great room. Great location. Very nice lobby with free internet access on gorgeous Mac displays.

Check in was trouble free. Most of the staff were friendly and courteous- Restaurant staff, less so.

The onsite 'Royal Spa' was kind of a joke. It was a trio of pools and a sauna. We spent only a short amount of time there before opting for the real deal at the Polynesian spa.

Would stay here again.

This hotel is located right across the lake, infact, our room had an amazing direct view of the lake. While the hotel in itself is pretty decent as well as the bedroom, thier bathroom needs a little refurnishment.
We really enjoyed thier pool and the thermal pools inside the hotel. The breakfast (incl in our package) was strictly ok.
But once you step outside the hotel not only do you have the lake across the street, you are also a step away from a street filled with bars & restaurant.
Staff & service is also quite good. $235/night was not a great price to pay (wont concur with the 4 star rating very convincingly) but i wont regret much.
