“Great price, very comfortable bed”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 October 2013

Got a great deal for two, upgraded to spa bath with full buffet breakfast. The spa bath was only just adequate, water not very hot, only one or two jets worked. Breakfast was great but the restaurant was so busy, dishes kept running out, disappointing couldn't get any eggs to go with the bacon!!! had run out, more was coming but really can't put the bacon back to keep warm. The room was in need of a lot of TLC. The best thing was the beds, it was so comfortable, nicest bed in the hotel/motel ever.

We booked this hotel purely based on price with the inclusive breakfast added and the reputation of the Rydges Hotel group sealing the deal. It's true the hotel decor is dated but the staff were pleasant and facilities decent. Our room was large and beds comfortable, the bathroom could have done with a spruce up but they are not in a state of disrepair. With a pool and small gym providing good wind downs to the end of the day and a great range at breakfast Rydges made our stay in Rotorua a good one. Make sure when booking you get a deal with breakfast added as it seemed to be quite pricey if you hadn't and get there early to avoid the rush. We booked on "lastminute.com" and had a "deluxe spa room".

Room Tip: Rooms at the back of the hotel give you a view of the racetrack

Stayed overnight recently - after attending a Bay steamers local match . Big complex in need of some TLC and updating - furnishings throughout old and tired . Check in smooth - ample parking - convienient location to main centre - 10-15min walk. Rooms very generously sized- had spa bath in ensuite. Ensuite fixtures/tiling etc. could also do with update. Very comfortable bed/pillows - adequate tea/coffee facilities. Had breakfast next morning included - main restaurant/buffet area light /airy - good selection of breakfast foods - fresh fruit, cereals, smoothie shots , cold meats - full cooked breakfast selection . enjoyed it . Stayed here 4-5 yrs ago - nothing much changed since then. Would stay again at the right price.

Leading up to our trip I was a bit worried about the bad reviews this property received. Let's not beat around the bush. Yes it is a little dated however there looks like a fresh paint job in rooms and new duvets etc. The beds were really comfy. We had a deluxe spa room with 2 x Queen Beds. We had 2 adults and 3 kids.
The buffet breakfast was excellent value. We purchased it as part of our deal. Lots to choose from and it was fresh and warm. The service from the wait staff was excellent. They were all very good with the kids and quickly cleared our plates. We also ate a dinner here too. Lovely food, they had even set up a kids buffet as part of the school holiday deal.
They dealt with all requests efficiently and coped with our children running down to get extra cocoa and milk etc. The kids lived in the undercover heated pool.
We all can't wait to come back and stay here another time. I am an ex travel agent so have seen lots of properties over the years and I totally enjoyed this experience and the service and extras made up for the dated decor and the odd bit of stained grout etc which I could cope with knowing the age of the hotel and the price that we paid. Thanks Rydges Rotorua for a fabulous 3 nights.

We arrived at around 1.30pm and grabbed a trolley to load our luggage on. We checked in and my 12 year old was pushing the trolley up the ramp
The guy on reception repeatedly asked if we needed help, and we said no
Unfortunately my son had the trolley backwards and it got stuck going up the ramp
The guy came to our rescue (although seemed a little abrupt, but think that may just be his manner as he was certainly helpful enough)
The room was large, although insanely hot! ! And clean enough
Breakfast was good, but things could have been refilled a little quicker, and I felt very sorry for the lady in charge of seating people as there was a large volume (and we witnessed her having to deal with an extremely rude Japanese lady that insisted she had a booking, even though there are no breakfast bookings, it is first come first served.)
The lady behind the counter would direct you to the waiting area, and you would be seated within minutes
She also bid us a very lovely farewell each time we left
The guy at the mezz bar was also friendly, as we had passed through after dinner and said we would try to pop back once the kids were settled
He remembered us when we did
The kids loved the pool
Great set up for the 2 older kids to use the big pool, and our little chap in the paddling size pool
One of the kids locked the door from the inside and the same man from when we checked in promptly sorted it out. (Although in the same abrupt manner as our last dealings with him, but again, think this may just be his manner, as he was helpful)
We had a buffet dinner at the atrium,
Again food was good. Great value as the kids ate and drank for free, and with my priority card gives received 20 percent off the bill.

Our first memory was the front desk staff. They were very friendly and suggested places to eat and attractions to see, including a park where you could see mud pools for free. We had a lovely surprise when we walked into our room. It overlooked the racecourse. It was just fantastic sitting on the balcony and soaking up the view. Apart from the comfy beds, our room had a spa bath and a small kitchen. It was all very clean.
We had a lovely buffet breakfast and we would recommend this hotel to anyone.

We stayed for two nights in September. The foyer is quite grand with marble staircase and leather sofas, however, our room was not.
Room was large and bed clean, bathroom tiles were stained, and very dated! I just cannot understand how this hotel managed to get four and a half stars!
Perhaps people book purely on the name?
The check in and out was o.k but not up to standard for a four star let along a four and a half!
No help was offered to take our cases up to our room, and this service was provided with some of the smaller motels we stayed in!
The restaurant was o.k. but expensive, same for the breakfast prices, so we found a cafe in town which was great!
It's no wonder we did not see many people dining there!

Room Tip: Check one until you are happy with the condition of both rooms!

Thank you for your comments and ratings Sally113

A dissappointing read I must say and one which I do apologise for. We do pride ourselves on our service levels but it is quite clear by you comments that these have slipped from there previous heights.

I have spoken with the Front Office team and given a copy of your room comments to our Executive Housekeeper and should you decide to visit with us again, I'm sure you will notice a marked improvement.

Thank you again

Kind regards
