For our 18th wedding anniversary we stayed two nights in a wonderful big room with spa bath and wonderful balcony views out towards lake and hills. Overall I would say it was fine for the amount it cost however was spoiled by a few things: - the spa bath had rotten wood breaking off and some of the woodwork was stained near the ceiling. However I have to say it was still wonderful to have a lovely spa. We were really disappointed in the breakfast. The cooked breakfast was luke warm, sausages tasted rubbery, couldn't eat it and stuck to toast. The hot water tasted like chlorine so I mentioned it to one of the waitresses and she promptly changed the water container which tasted much better. We decided to have breakfast out the next morning.

The bed was really comfortable, a nice firm mattress which I have to say is probably the best bed I have stayed in at a hotel.

Rydges Rotorua is located a short drive from town centre. Room 302 was a king spa room and we upgraded to this class of room because of the outstanding value for money that the hotel website offered. The room was huge with spacious king bed, kitchenette and a private balcony overlooking the racecourse and towards Lake Rotorua. There was a separate bathroom with a spa bath although the broken blind needed a serious clean. There was no air con and the lights were a little dim for the size of the room. The room was located at the end of a corridor which made it dead quiet. The breakfast room doubled as the restaurant and both offered good food although staff were overly formal and occassionally inefficient. However these minor problems were more than compensated by the excellent value and quality of the hotel.

Stayed for a week in October for our honeymoon. Didn't realise how far from town centre it was. You could walk but it would take you a good 20 mins, which wasn't very pleasant in the cold or rain.

Overall thought it was alright, not fantastic, but not terrible either. Main problems were the outdated furnishings and restaurant and the lower levels were a bit musty. Our room did have a spa in it, which was good for two people. Again was older style and the room it was in got pretty cold, even with the windows closed.

Room size was fantastic though, was impressed. Had King bed, small-ish table to eat on and ensuite separate from spa room. Views to the lake were pretty non-existant though, think I remember that they advertise that as a feature. You can see the lake, but it is far away.

Restaurant food was bad, to be polite. Room service food was good though. Most of the tours will pick you up from the hotel.

Stayed in smelly Rotorua for 3 nights, in a twin room. Reception staff lovely, room service prompt. Had to ask for a corkscrew which was whipped up to our room in about 2 minutes! HUGE ROOM, small balcony overlooking the racetrack!

Highly recommended, pricing is reasonable!

We stayed here for one night in February whilst touring. It was in a reasonable location, probably about 10+ mins walk to the centre of town. The lobby and restaurant area was clean and modern which gave us a false impression of what our room (332) would be like, as it turned out to be a bit "tired and dated". Nothing to complain about as it was clean & tidy but perhaps needed some updating. I think other rooms may be better. There was no aircon, just a ceiling fan, and the night was particularly hot and sticky so that was a letdown. It also seemed a bit noisy with a general buzzing or humming all night - I don't know if we were near to some sort of plant / machine room? But, as said, nothing to complain about and reasonable value. If we had been staying longer then we would have asked to change rooms. Nice pool. Would I recommend it? Yes, subject to getting a better room.

Dear Gary & Kris,

Thank you for the comments and hope your tour went well in NZ. We do indeed have rooms of higher standard to the ones you stayed in (The standar room level). Our deluxe rooms feature spas, balconies & now most have aircon also.

The installation of aircon units to all rooms is on-going but we hope to have all rooms done this year.

Appreciate your comments regarding the look of the rooms - we do hope to consider a refresher of some sort to the bathrooms at some stage this year.

Again many thanks for your feedback.

A bit late getting our room ready but great room service. They did accommodate our requests.

The part of rotorua where this hotel is located is a bit smellier than other parts - but you do get used to rotten eggs after a while.

Restaurant is nice and good room service.

HUGE rooms with good facilities. Bathrooms a bit dated but fine. A guest laundry is available at no charge!

free parking is a bonus.

If you are ever in Rotorua, i would say to people. Stay at Rydges Rotorua. I stayed here for five nights in a king spa Suite. It was very clean room and the design of the room made my say here even better. The private balcony, and spa bath were just great. Thr staff were also great and helpfull. The Atrium Restaurant, and Mezz bar are are good idea to relax and unwind after a busy day. I visit Rotorua five to six time a year, and after staying at Rydges, i will always stay at Rydges Rotorua.

Many thanks to all the staff of Rydges Rotorua, please pass my words on to all the team.
