“Stunning location”
Reviewed 16 March 2011

This is a beautiful lodge set in a truly stunning location. From the moment we arrived until the moment we left we were treated as royalty. The service and attention that Wayne, Ingrid and team give guests is second to none. Our suite had beautiful views of the Lake. The food rivalled London top restaurants. We went swimming, kayaking, in the hot pools on the Lake and trout fishing. It was a really magical three days. There are also the little things here they have like a complimentary mini bar which set the tone.

We had a wonderful trip and would love to return one day.

Wow, what a terrific place to stay! Solitaire Lodge is located in a stunning natural setting, on a peninsula in a picturesque lake. Our room was large, with lots of windows to take advantage of the beautiful view out over the lake to the mountains. Solitaire provides many ways to take advantage of the area, including kayaking, fishing, hiking, or just sitting on the deck and enjoying the view.

The management and staff at Solitaire are extraordinarily helpful and attentive. They went out of their way to make this a great trip for us. We arrived to a friendly greeting, a quick personal tour, and a glass of wine. They arranged everything we needed -- a private boat ride to the far side of the lake so we could take a hike, backpacks and lunches for the trail, a boat pick-up for the return trip, a glass of wine (or cup of tea) on our return. They were so warm and welcoming that it felt like we were with friends. Graham, Christine, and Jack all were friendly, outgoing, and helpful. Solitaire is small, and it allows a level of personal service that you just don't get in a big hotel.

The food was excellent -- beautifully presented and delicious. We were able to talk to the chef, Marcus, who worked in an open kitchen as he prepared the food. The wine pairings, chosen by Graham, were very good.

Solitaire is a unique, special place -- beautiful, great location, exceptional service, excellent food. We had a great time.

/from the beautiful black swans to the serene lake to the powerful volcanic mountain to the fresh and healthy food, all that the eyes behold at Solitaire lends itself to the most relaxing vacation I have ever experienced in N.Z.--and I have travelled throughout the country more than 20 times. The staff provides very personal, yet professional attention to the needs and
desires of guests,. Want to travel by boat to a hot, mineral pool at the lake's edge? Want a sparkling fire in the sitting area of the lodge as you select and enjoy a fine wine before dining? Want to unwind from stress as a skilled massage therapist provides a healing treatment? Nothing compares to Solitaire Lodge as it provides all of the above--and more.

My husband and I shared a wonderful, relaxing weekend at Solitaire Lodge. We spent our first enchanted morning walking to the Tarawera Falls and our second basking in a natural thermal pool known only to locals. Delightful. The staff was discreet but very attentive, quickly taking note of our preferences. Chef Bruce was a master and our dinner was memorable for all the right reasons. Our room combined a lovely balance of privacy with superb lake views. An outstanding experience.

My husband and I spent 3 nights and loved every minute of it. Wayne and the staff were just great. From the moment we arrived, we felt welcome and our every expectation was met. Graham the general manager was always helpful and Chef Bruce served meals that were outstanding and beautifully presented. He has even sent me some recipes since I returned home.

The location of the Solitaire Lodge is stunning. Our suite overlooked Lake Tarawera and could not have been better. Large picture windows provided a beautiful setting. The beauty of the area is hard to describe.

The lodge owns several boats, so access to the Lake Tarawera is easy. We hiked, fished and just explored each day. The Lodge is happy to arrange excursions for you. They don't know the word "no".

We had a marvelous time, highly recommend Solitaire Lodge, and hope to return someday.

My husband and I just returned from a 3 week trip to NZ. First a 14 day cruise on a 6 star ship followed by a 5 day stay at Solitaire Lodge on Lake Tarawera outside of Rotorua.
Solitaire Lodge was the highlight of our trip. The setting is beautiful, and if you love the outdoors, as we do, the fishing, hiking, boating, and swiming will keep you very busy; however it's also a lovely place to just kick back and read a book.

One of the true highlights of our stay was dinner each evening where Chef Bruce Thomason's ever changing menus showcased the wonderful foods grown and raised in NZ. Sommelier Graeme Fairey then paired a special NZ wine to compliment each course. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful.

Owner Wayne Tomlinson and his staff attend to your every need and desire.

We have traveled extensively and stayed in many lovely Inns and Hotels around the world. We enjoyed Solitaire Lodge so much we plan to return for a special celebration in 2011.
