We were surprised at the entry fee, but having paid the same amount to visit the wonderful Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland, we still went ahead. The museum was quite interesting, especially the information about the eruption and the white and pink terraces. However, as soon as we got outside it became apparent that there is really not much left of the village to look at, and what is there is a small collection of huts or foundations and some ash coated jars and jugs. Not worth the entry fee in our opinion. The watefall is a worthwhile detour but I think the whole thing is seriously overpriced.
