Our children had a great time doing the treasure hunt (which was really challenging in places!! Yay!) and we loved the wild trout in the stream. Great displays with lots of information. Friendly staff.

What a great review. Thank you so much for taking the time to recommend us. We rely a lot on these reviews to help make the Buried Village better. Great that the children enjoyed the treasure hunt and it wasn't too easy :) We hope to see you again soon for some more fun and learning.

Excavation of this buried village allows you to see the size of the houses people lived in, as well as the hotel. Take time in the museum before hand to understand the layout of the village and who certain people were before heading outside to see the site.

I enjoyed the restored house and the information about the people who lived there laid out near the museum, and this was all explained very well in a free tour held at noon and lead by a friendly staff member.

The river running through the place was so clear, and you could see trout in it!

The shop has umbrellas, coats, and scarves you can borrow to keep you warm and dry during your stroll. The museum and part of the outdoor area is wheelchair accessible.

Thanks for the great response. Yes the stories of the people of Te Wairoa are very interesting and make the village come alive. The Museum provides exhibits of Te Wairoa from the early settlers, to the Geological Wonders: The Pink and White Terraces, and excavated objects over 100 years old! Vi's Teahouse is a great way to end with delicious home-baking and excellent hot drinks.

Take the road to Lake Tarawera, the village is located passed the Green lake.
Te Wairoa was buried by a violent eruption of Mount Tarawera in 1886.
There is a museum and an archeological site with full descriptions of what was buried and destructed by the volcano.
It is privately run, a good initiative to preserve the history of the area.
Obviously is not as spectacular and not as archeologically important as Pompei and Ercolano in Italy (destructed by the volcano Vesuvio) but is still interesting and worth the visit.

Thank dangerly

The walk around the park is easy and informative. The staff suggested we take the time to walk to the waterfalls which is a steep decent and steep incline but so worth the walk.Great attraction
