We had booked our room specifically for the view but found this was marred by overlooking the roof, the carpark & a very large tree. Was also very noisy from hotel machinery in in area just outside our room. Room has been refurbished & was very clean, however bathrooms in need of an upgrade, at least to get rid of rusty fittings.
The saving grace of this hotel is its wonderful staff, from reception through to the breakfast restaurant. All were friendly & very helpful. I'd return because of the staff, however I would be very specific about which room I want, as this hotel is all about the (promised) view.

Stayed here two years ago when it was a 'Heritage Hotel' - has had its rooms refurbished since then and overall I think its a great value for money family spot.
ROOMS
We had interconnecting rooms - a little on the small side but really comfy beds and a fantastic selection of pillows on the new linen covers and sheets to choose from. There is a good selection of amenities in the bathrooms and a note offering more complimentary ones from housekeeping if you had forgotten an essential item, which I thought was a nice touch. Lots of towels too which is always good! No mini bar as such but a call to room service should you need anything to drink. Air conditioning worked well, and rooms quiet because of not on the main road.
LOCATION
About 5 min drive from the centre of town - but a couple of takeaways/cafes/restaurants within walking distance. There was a notice near the lifts saying they had complimentary shuttle service for those without a car. Lots of car parks right out front of the hotel for free.
SERVICE and FACILITIES
Really helpful, efficient reception staff - no charge for our snack to be delivered to the pool area. Outdoor heated (like quite warm!) pool a hit with the kids. Gym was well kept and all the equipment and machines was new and we enjoyed using it on our stay. Noticed they had a Beauty Spa but did not visit. Buffet breakfast was adequate and with good selection - with an offer every morning of cooking eggs to our liking in addition which was great. Staff in restaurant very friendly and helpful.

Overall a great family place - would definately stay again when in Rotorua!

Room Tip: rooms at back of hotel would get a great view of the bubbling hot pools over the way

1-night stay via a Wotif secret deal. Standard chain hotel type of facility. It was right next to 2 of the geothermal attractions in Rotorua, south of the centre. Beds were very comfy, small bath, swimming pool and spa out the back.
My top tip though would be to bypass Rotorua as it's souless and stay in Lake Taupo as it was far nicer.

Of all the places to spend 2 nights of our 12 in NZ, this was a great choice. Classy, stylish, clean, and spacious for 3 adults. A little removed from the center of Rotorua, but featuring an active geothermal "backyard." (No, the aroma does not seep into the room.) A full range of services and nice happy hour. Attractive to tour groups for good reason. It felt like an American hotel but nicer than most American Holiday Inns. Be sure to stop in at the small Cafe across the street.

Room Tip: Rooms on the south side of the hotel overlook the geothermal area.

I am delighted to read that you found our Hotel to be a great choice. We believe it is a classy place too, and pride ourselves on the cleanliness of our rooms and facilities.

You are correct in saying we are a little removed from the centre of Rotorua. We are away from the hustle and bustle of the CBD, and consider this to be part of the charm of our peaceful and relaxing location, next to the picturesque Whakarewarewa geothermal reserve.

Rotorua is a tourist town and there are a very large number of places you can stay. We wanted somewhere that was nice and comfy and that had air conditioning. We booked last minute at a busy time of the year since we had not liked a hotel we were originally booked at.

This property turned out to be exactly what we were after and it's the place we'll stay when we next return to Rotorua. The rooms are not all that big but they are nicely decorated, very clean, the bed is comfortable and there are plenty of pillows.

We started in a two bedroom suite but the air conditioning did not work and we were offered two adjoining rooms instead. This was an upgrade really since the rooms were nicer. I was really impressed and thankful that this happened given how busy they were.

We had room service once but otherwise did not eat here. The food was basic and not something we'd order again but that's pretty typical of hotel food. There are huge numbers of places to go and eat in Rotorua and so this isn't an issue.

Elements of the presentation such as the corridors and the lifts are showing their age but I think overall this property stands up very well as a four star.

Room Tip: There are four internal rooms that overlook the roof - these are not as good as the other rooms.

This is one of the 6 hotels we stayed in as part of an 18 day holiday in New Zealand. We had decided to stay in this hotel rather than one in Rotorua centre due to its proximity to the geothermal areas. However the hotel is somewhat isolated from restaurants/bars and if you want to eat/drink outside the hotel you need to drive or get a taxi. There were two restaurants opposite the hotel but one was shut most of the time we were there and the other was for 'booked groups' only! We had booked a 3 night stay and paid extra for a room with a geothermal view. On arrival we were allocated a room overlooking the car park! Eventually we were given a room with a view. The room was incredibly small compared to all the other hotels we used - but we had paid less for it. The room was not serviced on one day because we were still in the room when the cleaner arrived and we asked her to come back later but she didn't. Due to the lack of options within walking distance we ate in the hotel. I can only describe the dining room as 'chaotic - although I would not criticise the service staff who seemed to be doing their best. Breakfast time was even worse where the staff were often besieged by people from coach parties who were not prepared to wait their turn and/or stick to their alloted time. I had never heard a member of a restaurant team shout at customers before but in this case we felt it was probably the only way order could be restored and the staff did their best to help the independent couples and families. On a positve note we found the food very good - the breakfasts were as good as anywhere else we had stayed with a huge choice and food constantly replenished. We ate a la carte in the evenings rather than use the buffet and all meals were of a good quality. Whilst the hotel was busy hardly anyone used the outdoor heated pool and jacuzzi and these were great! We very much enjoyed Rotorua and would recommend trips to 'Wai-O-Tapu', 'Te Puia', 'Hells Gate' and the 'Buried Village'.

Room Tip: You can get nice views of the geothermals but our room was small. If you prefer a larger room you ma...

Dear Villan64,

Thank you for choosing to stay at Holiday Inn Rotorua, and for taking the time to comment on Trip Advisor.

I appreciate your comments regarding our location. We are located 3km from the central city, and away from the hustle and bustle of the central restaurants and bars. However, we do provide a free shuttle service to town for those guests without their own transport, or who prefer not to drive. And we consider that our peaceful location on an active geothermal valley, is one of the aspects that make a stay at Holiday Inn Rotorua, a unique and memorable experience.

It was pleasing to read that you enjoyed the Buffet Breakfast, and found our a la carte meals to be of a good quality. We strive to provide a consistently good standard of products and services, regardless of occupancy levels, and all correspondence both positive and negative, assists us in achieving these.

Again, I would like to thank you for taking the time to place your feedback and we look forward to welcoming you back to Holiday Inn Rotorua.

We stayed 3 nights in this Holiday Inn and were very pleased with the comfortable beds and the very clean and spacious rooms we had. The beds were the most comfortable I had in a hotel ever. The staff was very friendly and helpful with all of our requests. One small drawback is the smell of sulphur in the floors (not in the rooms!) because of the proximity to the geothermal areas. Be aware of lots of japanese travel groups invading the breakfast room every morning.
