“Reliable chain hotel, but location a little out”
Reviewed 7 October 2013 via mobile

If you want the reliability of a big international hotel chain in a town with lots of motels then this is a good choice. We booked a deluxe room which was on the 4th floor with good views over the town. It was clean and modern, with air conditioning, a good choice of tv channels, a spacious bathroom with a shower over the bath, and a good wifi signal - there was 30 minutes free wifi per device in the lobby, but we could pick this up from our room too, then you have to pay for further access.
The restaurant was large and busy - as you'd expect for a hotel this size.
If you'd prefer to dine out, the hotel is quite a way out from the main eateries so be prepared to drive or get a taxi, although the hotel operates a shuttle service until 9pm.
Overall a good and seemingly reliable choice of place to stay - a little corporate and slow on service at times, and location not great for walking to have a drink or to eat hence 4 not 5 stars.

What a fantastic location, overlooking the geysers, what a spectacular sight for us Aussies to wake too. We had a balcony room and a poolside room and couldn't be more happier. Very comfortable and spacious, staff were extremely helpful and friendly. The buffet breakfast was delicious with a great variety. I want to come back. Thanks to the Holiday Inn for our pleasant experience. Walking distance to Whakarewarewa Maori village is a bonus and worth a look.

Room Tip: Worth getting a room facing Whakarewarewa living Maori village for the geyser experience.

We had room 520 on the fifth floor overlooking the Car Park. Room was spacious, very clean and very comfortable. Staff were extremely helpful and very friendly. Thoroughly enjoyed the buffet breakfast and fantastic buffet dinner. Really nice relaxing at the bar prior to dinner as well. The thermally heated pool was great and perfect temperature. Didn't really notice the sulphur smell until we went outside the hotel. Would definitely stay there again.

Room Tip: Probably best to have a room on the car park side.

That end of rotorua smells soo bad, closer too town is much more pleasant, the holiday inn is not at fault for this of course. The pool is lovely and warm as they use the water from the hot springs. The buffet breakfast was amazing and staff helped sort out our wifi and tours.

We had room 801 on the 2nd floor. Views of the car park from this room. The room was spacious, clean & quiet, with 2 comfy queen beds, small fridge & air con. Plenty of room for luggage. We were greeted by friendly & helpful staff. 30 minutes of free internet was available in the lobby. If you paid for the breakfast buffet at the checkin counter the night before, ($25 per head) you were given 12 hours/150mb of internet to use in your room.
There is a smell in the lobby & on the ground floor heading towards the lifts, not pleasant but not overpowering either. All other areas were free of the smell, including our room, the bar & the restaurant.

The evening we arrived, we chose to dine in the hotel restaurant, Chapmans, where we enjoyed a lovely a la carte meal with pleasant wait staff & excellent food. We had the buffet breakfast which was average & at $25 was quite expensive.

The hotel is located quite a way up the hotel strip, from the centre of Rotorua, but we had a car so it wasn't an issue for us.

We enjoyed our time at the Holiday Inn & would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with views over the thermal area, the carpark isn't so nice to look at.

so if you really don't like the smell of sulfur there are probably other hotels further into town that are not as close to the action. There is a spot in the foyer that is really on the nose, but it really is just part of the experience. Easy checkin, friendly staff. We had breakfast included, which was good, but not outstanding. We also took the dinner and internet package. Dinner was nice, but definitely 'buffet' style food, so again not outstanding. Internet package was fine as it was 12h, but only 150mb so ran out before the hours ran out - the good thing was that it was a cumulative 12h. be warned though, that if you need more time (we bought another 12h and a lot more download), that it is a sequential time, which we started at 9:30 at night only to find there was nothing left in the morning!!! Room was clean, bed was comfy. It was not a huge room but was quite adequate for our needs. I would have liked to have a swim, the water was a great temperature, but the husband had the aversion to the sulfur so I may need to go back on my own :) It is a bit out of the city and on the edge of town, so you either need your own car to get round, or you can catch a shuttle bus which runs thru the day. What was lovely was to look out the window to the geothermal valley and the rising gases of Whakarewerewe Village and the Forest beyond.

Room Tip: ask for a room on the valley side rather than looking onto suburbia

I booked the deal that includes breakfast which worked out well for us.

Check-in procedures smooth, room comfortable.

The hotel provides the impression of being tidy, comfortable and well appointed without being pretentious, which I really like. EG being able to relax as if you were at home.

Had a bit of an issue on the first night with a clown in the next room and noise - mentioned in passing to the duty manager Nick the next morning and boom just like that he arranged a new room which proved to be much better for the second night. Thanks Nick.

My daughter loved the pool and the buffet, especially the dessert (go figure). Have to say though it was all good; very nice. And good to relax in a 33 degree pool at the end of a long day.

The aspect that made the biggest and best impression was the staff though. Thinking in the restaurant as well as elsewhere, these people were practical, approachable and genuinely friendly and held guest comfort as very important, it was plain to see.

The weekend away was to celebrate my daughter's birthday so I was keen for the accommodation to be up to scratch. In hindsight now I am very happy to have selected the Holiday Inn at Rotorua and will do so without hesitation again.
